I had no idea what to expect. Simon Haynes is an author and software developer from Australia. Beyond the Spacejock books he created a program for writers called yWriter5 which is actually an amazingly good piece of software. Even better it's free. In fact all the software at his website is free. So check it out. Now about the book. Think Keith Laumer's Retief series with a bit of Indiana Jones thrown. Then make him their slightly incompetent cousin. That's Hal Spacejock. And the book was great fun. With a beat up out dated robot and a long suffering navigation computer (both of whom are brighter than he is) Hal rocks his way through some adventures that will keep you reading right through to the end. Even better it's the first book in a series. Looking for some fun and funny science fiction? Check out Hal Spacejock.

This book was very funny, and though predictable in the end (sorry, hope I didn't ruin it for you), the story getting there was Hilarious! Like they say, it's not the destination, the important part is the journey you take to get there. And BOY! was it a journey. I can't wait to read the rest of the Spacejock books.

I really enjoyed this book.  There is a touch of Douglas Adams to the humor, but it's not a direct ripoff in any way.  Also, it was a joy to finally find a free, self-published book that wasn't crying out desperately for an editor and proof-reader.  I'll definitely be buying the other books in this series.

Simon Haynes knocks one out of the space park! You will find yourself rooting for Hal and Clunk even as you laugh at their silly and inept antics.Hal is one of those guys that just always bounces back.

Hal Spacejock is fast, fun read guaranteed to make you chuckle out loud. Simon Haynes keeps the plot simple and moving forward quickly. All Hal has to do is pick up some cargo and deliver it. The only problem is, Hal isn¿t the bravest, smartest, or even most motivated of guys. These qualities end up making the whole trip a lot more interesting. Through a series of misfortunes Hal ends up in mortal peril, causing massive property damage, and having his ship stolen. You find yourself turning the pages just to see how Hal and Clunk get out of their jam and into the next. Fans of sci-fi will appreciate the little digs at other books and movies, but anyone looking for a good read will enjoy the story, humorous dialogue and outrageous situations. While not as non sequitur as ¿Hitchhikers Guide¿, Haynes does drop in plenty of gibes on our modern way of living and taking it to that next step 'do we really want the elevator computer to know how much we weigh?' I definitely recommend Hal Spacejock to anyone looking for a solidly entertaining book that will provide laughs and introduce you to some fun characters.

The first book in a great series. Hal and his robot helper, Clunk, traverse the galaxy and get into more trouble than you can shake a stick at. Simon understands the writing process, and more importantly, knows how to keep the reader involved with the story. You will compare Hal to other heroes like Han Solo (they share the same initials), but he is his own man. Do not be afraid to pick up this funny science fiction book, and then read it. It is very readable even by younger kids (about 10 should do it).

I like science fiction stories with some humor in them This is more like the three stooges in space. Too slapstick for me.

Ok here is a warning. You WILL be reported if this role play keeps up. I will not stand this. This is for reveiwing books, not talking. And stop with the older kid stuff. Theres little kids who read this. Im not happy that this stuff is being said. I.WILL.REPORT.YOU

Hated it. Was silly, not funny. Couldn't stand more than a few chapters.

This book reads like it was written by a teenage writer wannabe. Very little was interesting and it is not worth reading all the way through.....

Hal Spacejock is a down-on-his-luck starship pilot given a last chance to make enough money to pay off his creditors and keep his head attached to his shoulders. All he has to do is transport some cargo to another world (avoiding pesky things like customs agents). Which should be simple... but between dealing with cargo thieves, rogue robots, a snarky ship's computer, and his own less-than-stellar level of piloting competence, things get pretty complicated... and funny. Simon Haynes' style is fast, breezy, and funny, and at its best when the characters are talking to, and often past, one another. True, there are bits that go on for too long, or seem like one convolution too far, but how much plausibility do you really want in a sci-fi space opera comedy? I enjoyed much about this book, and am looking forward to the sequels.
