Overview

Halloween is Murder by Carolyn Arnold

"A nice and fun, old-fashioned mystery. Halloween is Murder was a very well-written and fast read with great characters and a fun mystery with a resolution that I did not see coming."

–The Reading Café

Beware of all that goes bump in the night…

Sean and Sara McKinley are excited about the haunted house they’ve set up as a Halloween charity fund-raiser, but things take a ghoulish turn when the reporter covering their story is found dead. With the media keeping mum about how she died, Sara’s curiosity is piqued, and she convinces Sean to take on the investigation through their PI firm.

But this case is not without its challenges. The police are actively investigating it, as well, and it’s not even clear that the woman was murdered. It will take a little cloak-and-dagger, dress-up, and finesse for the McKinleys to get to the bottom of it, but they aren’t the kind to give up.

As they troll for leads and work through the skeletons in the reporter’s closet, they unearth a few suspects, but they’ll need to carve out the whole truth if they’re going to find her killer. If they do so fast enough, there might even be time for a little trick-or-treating.

---4.5 Stars--- I really enjoyed reading this book! Another successful book from Carolyn Arnold! I love fun, cozy, mystery books and this book totally fits the bill! I had so much fun playing along, trying to solve the crime with the McKinley’s! This book revolves around Sara and Sean McKinley, their PI Firm, and their team of investigators. Sara and Sean are interviewed by reporter Chloe Parsons about the haunted house they set up as a Halloween charity fund-raiser. While the whole crew is at home waiting to watch their interview on TV it is announced that Chloe, the reported who interviewed them has died and their interview is not aired. Everyone is in complete shock, especially Sara who wants to go investigate Chloe’s death. However, Sean is resistant and thinks they should wait and see what the police turn up. Unfortunately, the police and medical examiner seem to be leaning towards Chloe dying of natural causes! Sara is outraged and is dead set on proving it was murder! Sara is finally able to convince Sean to partake in the search to prove Chloe was murdered and to find her killer. This is not an easy feat and Sara and Sean encounter many obstacles along the way. But the McKinley’s and their team are on the case and they’re going to find the truth and bring Chloe justice. I really liked the main characters – Sean and Sara McKinley! They were well developed, likable, and genuine. They had great chemistry and really played well off each other. They pushed and pulled each other’s buttons, but also helped and supported each other – like a real married couple! I enjoyed the supporting cast for the most part – the PI firm team. I think if I had read the other books in this series I might have had a better, stronger connection or relationship with them. Don’t get me wrong they were fine – but easily forgettable characters. The pace of this book is fast to steady. It keeps you fully engaged and entertained to the last page! I felt that some of the passages were a bit wordy, which detracted from the story and the pace. But overall it was an excellent read! This book is book eleven in the McKinley Mysteries Book Series. I had not read any of the books in this series before reading this book and I had no problems following this story and did not get lost or confused. So, this book can absolutely be read as a standalone book. Although this book has a strong seasonal Halloween background it can absolutely be enjoyed year-round! I happened to have read it around Halloween, but I could totally see myself enjoying it in February as well! All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend this book to all readers who enjoy a fun, exciting, cozy, mystery book! Carolyn Arnold has become one of my favorite authors for her ability to write accurate and authentic police procedural scenes while still keeping her creative flair of adding mystery, intrigue, and suspense to every page! **Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book and have voluntarily provided an honest, and unbiased review in accordance with FTC regulations.**

I was introduced to this book at the right time because my daughter is studying mystery books at school and I am trying to introduce her to new authors in this genre. Here it comes Carolyn Arnold! Wow! I just loved the McKinley Misteries! Sara and Sean are a great PI couple and the way the mistery evolves in the story is so convincing and suspensful. Sean and Sara McKinley have just set up a haunted house for a Halloween charity fund-raiser, after an interview to promote the house, the reporter covering their story is found dead. After that is just a cozy mistery fun just like Agatha Christie. You will have to follow the leads and I have to say that I will buy the others McKinley Misteries books because now I am hooked on! Great book!

A seasonal joy to highlight one of the spookiest nights of the year and what better way to celebrate it with a really good murder mystery set around a haunted house. In this novel we met Sean and Sara Mckinley who can be likened to one of the most famous married detectives duos created by Agatha Christie, Thomas and Tuppence. Reading this book took me back to my youth and reminded of all the Alfred Hitchcock books I used to read. The excellent setting around creating a haunted house leads to the lead reporter being murdered and it’s up to Sean and Sara to find out why. The storyline is a very easy one to follow and will be loved by young teens and adults who like a really good murder mystery with page turning events and clues to help you solve the case before the detectives can. With the clever writing and red herring leads that are put in place to mislead you it makes for a fantastic read at a special time of year. This is the first book I have read in the series but easily followed it and would love to peruse the others in order to enhance and embellish the characters. Praise for Carolyn Arnold and look out for other works by this author as they are just as intriguing and powerful as this novel.

A clean cozy mystery featuring a personable couple. 3.75 stars “Halloween is Murder” by Carolyn Arnold is a cozy mystery featuring husband and wife cops-turned-private investigators Sean and Sara McKinley. An interview featuring their haunted house fundraiser goes awry when the reporter who did their feature dies. The question of whether the death was from natural causes prompts Sara to drag the “Pay It Forward Investigations” staff into an investigation. Foul play or bad luck? Sara and Sean will find out, one way or another. This book is part of the ‘McKinley Mysteries’ series and is a gentle mystery that showcases the interactions between the easygoing couple and their staff, including their former sergeant, Jimmy, who is now their employee. The mild competition between their employees, the awkwardness of being on the other side of the badge in an investigation that they are only tangentially involved in, and the lack of a definitive conclusion pointing to murder make this a relatively low-key investigation, without a lot of excitement. I enjoyed the interaction between the McKinleys but I was disconcerted to suddenly have Jimmy’s point of view pop up every so often as he performed his share of the research. I get the feeling that those who are familiar with the series are more comfortable with the dynamics between the various employees of the agency and are used to the barbed comments traded between folks, but I would have liked to get to know all of the characters in a little more depth, with a bit less sniping and more camaraderie between a couple of them. This can be read as a stand-alone story, but I suspect one would benefit from having read other books in the series, in order to better appreciate the dynamics. Those looking for a sweet and mild cozy mystery featuring an altruistic couple who are free to pursue whatever they want will undoubtedly enjoy this seasonal story. A copy of this story was provided to me for review.

Halloween is Murder was a delightful read. I have read every one in this series and this one was one of the best. They were all great though. Carolyn has a way with words and can pull you right into the story from the beginning. Definitely a few twists and turns to this story and really kept me guessing for sure to see what would happen next. Sarah and Sean have been the characters from the beginning and really got too Know them well. I am sad to see this series come to an end. This is the perfect book for your Halloween time. A spooky haunted house that Sean and Sarah will find out what happens. You definitely don't want to miss out on this. Definitely recommend this book to cozy mystery fans. A spooky delight. Halloween is my second favorite holiday and I love everything to do with it. I have not read the other books in this series, but this can be read by itself without feeling like your missing something important. This was a quick and easy fun read. A haunted house for charity quickly turns sour when there is a death. The characters are well developed and easy to get attached to and the plot is full of twists and turns. This story had a quick pace that keeps the reader engaged until the very end. I will definitely be looking at other books from this author!

I am always eager to get my hands on another Carolyn Arnold story, so let’s get started with Halloween Is Murder. Sean and Sara used to be police officers, but now they are Private Investigators and their firm is called Pay It Forward Investigations. It hints at their personalities. They have plenty of money, so they indulge themselves. They are not pretentious, but they do like to spend money. She loves fashion and he loves his Mercedes. They are sponsoring a haunted house for charity, and Chloe Parsons is there to do a fluff piece. The joke is on her, she’s the victim. Sara had a knack for getting people to help her out and when she felt the police weren’t doing enough to find Chloe’s killer, she made it her mission. Sean can never say no to her, though he does try. Good luck with that Sean. I debated on the rating. Most cozies I read are threes and I feel Halloween Is Murder is right there with them. It is a fun easy read and I was pretty sure who it was early on. Carolyn did add numerous suspects and motives, and her misdirection gave me a doubt or two making me wonder if I was wrong. I do love Carolyn Arnold’s characters and who wouldn’t want a sweetheart like Sean. I had no OMG moments, but the pacing kept the story moving and the easy reading makes this an enjoyable read that I would recommend to all cozy lovers out there. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Halloween is Murder by Carolyn Arnold.

It’s Halloween and Sara and Sean McKinley has decorated their house up as a haunted house. There are lots of goodies inside and out and all profits go to a local charity. They even have a reporter, Chloe Parsons filming a little bit about everything. Things are going well until they see the news later that day and learn that Chloe has been found dead. The police don’t seem to really be looking into her death and Sara has a feeling that she was murdered. Sara talks Sean into looking into her death and they learn that there is a lot more to her story than what you see. This is a great cozy mystery. Quick to read but will keep you guessing at who killed Chloe. There are several people that won’t miss her and Sara is determined to solve the case when her sister asked them to look into it. They are great investigators, even when they find themselves in a little deep. I just love how well Sean and Sara get along. But the thing that really got me was the charity work. I understand the Haunted House for charity. But I loved the PI firm that runs from charity. What a great idea!! This is a great cozy mystery with a Halloween theme. It is the first book of Carolyn Arnold’s that I have read but it will not be the last. I can’t wait to start this series from the beginning. I received Halloween is Murder from Reading Addiction Virtual Book Tours for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

While I have read other books by Carolyn Arnold, I had yet to read a McKinley Mystery. I immediately fell in love with Sara and Sean. I also fell in love with the area Halloween is Murder is set in. Why, you may ask? Because I am familiar with the area so it really brought me into the story more than just having to imagine an area in my mind.   The mystery of the reporter's death had me hanging until the very end of the book. I really wasn't sure who had killed her until close to the end. Arnold has a way of leading you, the reader, to think it may be person A and it is really not. Once Sean and Sara had it narrowed down a bit, I started to see who must have been behind the murder but that was close to the finish of the book.   Pick up a copy of Halloween is Murder and have a ghoulish time for Halloween. You'll be happy you did. I received this book through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

STORY-LINE HALLOWEEN IS MURDER BY CAROLYN ARNOLD: In Halloween Is Murder, Sean and Sara McKinley, wishing to support charities for children, have set up a Halloween house. Getting a television interview by Chloe Parson, they did not expect Chloe to turn up dead the same day. Owner's of Pay It Forward Investigations, Sara has a "feeling" Chloe has been the victim of murder. After heart-felt pleas to investigate, Sara persuades Sean to take the case; they set off to find if murder's the cause. The police are still investigating the case; which means Sean and Sara must be careful proceeding. Through twists and turns, the McKinley's, dare I say, tip toe through their investigation. What will they find? Was Chloe murdered? If so, who did it, friend or foe? My book review of Halloween Is Murder follows. CHARACTERS, PLOTTING, DEVELOPMENT: Once again author Carolyn Arnold created a wonderful murder mystery. Filled with twists and turns, well-developed character, and an intriguing story-line, this book holds the reader's attention. I love Sean and Sara. Arnold filled Sean with love for Sara. He's willing to do almost anything to make her happy. Sara's a determined strong woman; yet, she has issues of insecurity. With hunches, feelings, and intuition, she makes a great investigator and partner for Sean. She uses her talents and he uses methodical investigation and reason; he wants evidence in his cases, she goes by her gut. They compliment each other; each with their own technique of crime solving. Arnold's secondary characters add spice and variety to the story line. You will love the crotchety medical examiner, as well as, Jimmy, employed as an PI by Sean and Sara. With a varied cast of characters, which one would want to murder Chloe? Arnold's characters are believable and realistic, as well as, varied in personality and characteristics. Arnold held the mystery close; not revealing until necessary. If Chloe was murdered, was it Jackson, the ex-boy friend, or the station manager who was making Chloe pay her dues before becoming an anchor? Was someone out there trying to even an old score? Or did she die of natural causes? Sorry, you will have to read the book; no spoilers revealed today. Carolyn Arnold's plotting included mystery, intrigue, and pacing in line with the length of the book. I found her writing flowed well; as a result, this book's an easy fun read. Each scene transitioned smoothly from scene to scene; without interruption or confusion for the reader. Halloween Is Murder, perfect for the ghostly season of Halloween, is a clean intriguing murder mystery book. I would not hesitate to buy this book for myself or a friend. HALLOWEEN IS MURDER RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4 FINALLY, PLEASE NOTE: Additionally, I received this book from Magic of Books and the author. IIchose to voluntarily review the book with honest cozy mystery book reviews. Lastly, book reviews of any novel are dependent on the book review author’s opinion. Consequently, all book reviews on-line and on my blog, are my opinions. In addition, no one influences my voluntary cozy mystery book reviews.

It certainly was easier to conduct a murder investigation when they were part of the police force...simply flash a badge and get information. But now that they are running their own private firm, it takes a little more effort and subtlety to gain the same information. In this case, they first have to start by convincing the police and everyone involved that there actually was a murder committed. Because when the reporter writing a story about their fabulous Haunted House fundraiser is later found dead in her bed, apparently of natural causes, they are asked by the reporter's own sister to prove it was murder. And even Sean isn't convinced it was anything other than a sad death. Can Sara convince him to take on this case? I enjoyed the story and the interactions between Sara and Sean, as well as with their associates, Jimmy and Adam. I also liked how the characters pointed out their difficulties pursuing the investigation without their official badges. This was the first book I have read by this author, but I will definitely follow this series in the future. Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing this advance reading copy of this book.

Sean and Sara McKinley met with Cloe Parsons, a reporter, to do an interview for coverage of their haunted house charity event. The interview and taping went well, but the next day instead of seeing their expose on the tv, they discover that Chloe had died. With all the secretiveness going on, Sara suspects that Chloe was murdered, and she won’t give up until she finds out the truth. I loved this couple. This was the first book that I have read of the McKinley mysteries, but not the first for this author. Each of Carolyn Arnold’s series’ have been good, with interesting characters and plots, and this one was as well. Even though I could tell there was plenty of back story that I did not know, I didn’t feel lost. It easily stood on its own. It did make me interested in going back to the beginning of the series though. It’s well worth the read.

An amusing and entertaining mystery! Halloween is Murder is an adventurous entertaining suspense. The beginning is fun and cute and holds enough intrigue that I had to continue to read to find out what was going on. There are several different twists and turns throughout that will keep you guessing until the end. Carolyn Arnold knows how to keep the suspense and intrigue in her stories to keep the reader entertained. Carolyn Arnold has written another captivating and amazing story with characters that are well developed and engaging. Carolyn’s stories are brilliantly written, entertaining, and fascinating. This is a definite winner from this author. I can’t wait to read more in this series and will definitely go back and read the previous books. I have read several books by Carolyn Arnold have not been disappointed yet! No matter the seriousness, amusement, or content, Carolyn creates books that will have you engrossed to the very end. I recommend Halloween is Murder to anyone that enjoys an amusing, adventurous and entertaining mystery.

I really love this series – they are shorter, quick reads and Sean & Sara have a great relationship together and have not let money become an issue. Plus they like to give a lot of it away and that is always a good thing to read. When it comes to the mystery itself, I did solve the crime but it wasn’t until near the end when a few clues were laid out and I was able to piece it all together. Until those were revealed I never had any reason to suspect this character. Definitely a series worth picking up! We give it 5 paws up

When Sara McKinley gets it into her head that something is not right and she wants to investigate, people have a difficult time telling her NO. In this Halloween adventure, involving the sudden death of a young TV reporter who is about to move on to a better opportunity, Sean McKinley has a tougher time than usual reigning Sara in. They both want justice to be served, even after retiring from the official police force. I like the collection of characters Carolyn Arnold has brought together for the McKinley's not-for-profit P.I. firm. The admirable rivalry between youngin tech genius Adam and seasoned former police sargeant Jimmy shows how it is possible to respect each other while still trying to outshine the "competition." It seems everyone is always trying to impress Sara, who adds as much to the team efforts as any one of the guys. A backdrop to the murder investigation is the McKinley's desire to promote a Haunted House for charity. This is how they first meet the victim, reporter Chloe Parsons and her cameraman, Jackson. It also allows us to be charmed by young Mia and gives the P.I's plausible excuses to walk into the different tv stations and ask questions. They are skating a thin line this time because the official investigation is not yet closed. Can they solve the murder before they tick off the wrong person? So far this is my favorite of the Murder series by Carolyn Arnold.

Halloween is Murder by Carolyn Arnold is the 11th book in her McKinley Mystery series. Though this is the 11th book in this series , this was my first book and it read very well as a standalone. I have been reading Arnold’s other two series (Madison Knight and Brandon Fisher), which are both violent intense murder mysteries. When I decided to read this book, I did not know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised, as this was a fun mystery with a great couple who lead this series. Sean and Sara McKinley are our heroes, who are married private detectives. Halloween is Murder begins with Sean and Sara promoting their haunted house to a TV reporter, promoting that all the profits go to charity. When the television spot did not appear on the local channel that evening, they learned that the female reporter died. Though they should not get involved in an open police case, nothing keeps Sara and Sean from doing their own investigation. What follows is a nice murder mystery with multiple possible suspects. What I really liked about this story was that we did not have any stress, or intense moments, just a nice & fun old fashion mystery. Sean and Sara were both fun to watch, as well as their team. Halloween is Murder was very well written, a fast read, great characters, and a fun mystery with a resolution that I did not see coming. Carolyn Arnold has given us a different type of murder mystery and I enjoyed it very much.. If you like mysteries that are light, fun reads, you should give this one a try.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of HALLOWEEN IS MURDER. Opinions expressed here are unsolicited, unbiased and entirely my own. The McKinley's are all exhilarated over their Haunted House as a fund raiser. They've got all the decorations in place inside and out. The local bakery is selling spooky treats. Donations are taken at the door. And everyone is in their favorite costumes. They even have a reporter and cameraman from the local newspaper to do a piece for the local news the next day. Unfortunately .... the reporter is found dead that night. Murder .. or something else? The police don't see to know .. or care that much. Sara and Sean take on the investigation with the help of their other team members. They find there is no shortage of suspects. The recent ex-boyfriend? Her boss who has refused to promote her? Someone who is jealous of her successes? Sean and Sara McKinley are back just in time for Halloween. Yes, readers, Halloween is just around the corner. There's nothing better than this cozy mystery to get one in the mood for all things dark and spooky. Well-written story with funny, likeable characters. It was a fast read and I found it hard to put down ... so I didn't. I'm not normally a fan of cozies, but I sure would take a gander at the other books in this series.

This is book 11 in the McKinley Mysteries, and I have only read the short novella intro to this series The Day Job is Murder, so it is clear that a lot has happened since that book! That said it can be read as a stand alone. Sean & Sarah are now Private Investigators and married, and they are all dressed up in Halloween costumes ready to take part in a news segment to help promote their Haunted House, which is seeing all proceeds going to charity and having no set admission charge. The reporter and cameraman from Your Source arrive to record the segment and it’s clear that the reporter Chloe would rather get this over and done with as soon as possible. Once it all over they all carry on about their day until it’s time for the segment to air on TV, with Sean, Sarah a few other gathered around the TV to watch they get a shock to discover that their piece won't be aired due to a death in the Your Source family - Chloe! The McKinley's are not only disappointed but shocked to say the least, considering they were all together several hours ago. How can a young, seemingly healthy woman just suddenly die a few hours later? That is what they end up investigating at the request of Chloe’s twin sister who believes that her sister was murdered and did not die of natural causes like the police are thinking. I had no idea who it could have been right up to the end, with such a narrow suspect pool I still didn’t guess who it could have been, but there was a moment of clarity where I thought ah ha! I have it, and was right. Carolyn did a great job as keeping you guessing as to who it was though. A great cozy mystery set around Halloween, I look forward to more from the McKinley's. I received this book through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, I have volunteered to share my review and all the opinions are 100% my own.

Although I have read other novels by Carolyn Arnold before-I never read one in this series which features ex police Sean and Sara McKinley. It seems that they got married after leaving the police force. Sean also came into a LOT of money so that neither had to ever work again. However they started a PI business but with a catch-all profits went to a children's charity! They had a couple of others who helped them--and they were --well let's just say interesting to say the least. In this novella Sean and Sara had put together a haunted house and charged a nominal amount for admission--they paid for the bulk of it out of their own pockets. The description was really good and I felt like I was there! Of course there was a murder. Sara, being very intuitive would not let it go--Sean--well---but they took on the case. But who would want to murder a reporter and why--and how? It almost appeared to be a death of natural causes-----could they solve it? Being a novella this book is not all that long but will keep your attention until the very end. There are some very comedic sequences as Sara convinces Sean that they have to figure this one out!! This definitely can be read as a stand alone, but you may find yourself wanting to read all the others in this series as well.
