Description: A brief, and at times narrative, work on the practice of consultation-liaison psychiatry, this book attempts to address not only the purpose of the subspecialized field, but also specific interview techniques, diagnostic realities, and techniques for completing evaluations in specific settings or with particular patient populations.
Purpose: Meant to be more of a clinical guide than an all-encompassing work, this book is intended to provide a common sense approach for general psychiatrists, working in general hospitals, who are also responsible for consultation duties.
Audience: The authors suggest this book is "intended for psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, primary care physicians, medical students, and all members of the health care profession who are interested in psychiatric approaches to patients in medical settings."
Features: Divided into four major sections, this book's main focus is on topics related to psychiatric presentations often seen by the consulting psychiatrist, as well as specific types of patients seen in the general hospital setting. There are numerous tables, and a few diagrams, and each chapter ends with an extensive list of mostly current references. In addition, numerous case examples illustrate pertinent points.
Assessment: The information in this book is useful and well researched. The chapters on immune compromised patients, obstetrics and gynecology patients, and chronic pain are particularly interesting and a worthwhile read for any clinician treating these patients. However, the layout of the book is troublesome, with ill-defined separations between sections of chapters and a narrative voice that often requires the reader to browse the information inefficiently, instead of being able to find sought after data quickly. Despite the design flaws, this book will likely prove valuable for those without time constraints when they are searching for information about specific patient types they are assessing in the consultation-liaison setting.
