Overview

Collects the basic principles, modern design concepts, and advanced techniques engineers use to model and evaluate the different types of manufacturing processes based on heating by induction. Connecting metallurgy and the laws of heat treatment, the handbook explains the electromagnetic and heat transfer phenomena that take place during induction heating, such as the skin effect, proximity effects, and electromagnetic end and edge effects. The bulk of the book describes methods of heating metals for the purpose of heat treatment, such as hardening and annealing, and applications of induction mass heating. The four authors work for Inductoheat. Annotation (c)2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

About the Author

Dr. Valery Rudnev, FASM is Director of Science & Technology, of Inductoheat providing assistance in developing novel induction heating and heat treating technologies for an entire Inductotherm Group Companies. Dr. Rudnev is considered by many as one of the leading global figures in the induction heating and heat treating industry and is known within the American Society for Materials (ASM International) and among induction heating professionals worldwide as "Professor Induction." In 2006, Dr. Rudnev was elected as a Fellow of the ASM Int’l in recognition of his distinguished contributions in materials science and engineering. His credits include more than 40 patents and inventions and more than 200 publications. Dr. Rudnev contributed materials to 10 Handbooks devoted to various aspects of induction heating, heat treating, material science and computer modeling. In 2013 – 2016, he was elected as the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Forging Industry Association (FIA) of North America.

Mr. Don Loveless was Group Vice President of Technology (retired) at Inductoheat Inc. and continues as a consultant. He received his Electrical Engineering degree from Western Michigan University. His global responsibilities included development of 14 models of induction heating power supplies including IGBT and MOS FET inverters as well as medium and high frequency transformers for a wide variety of applications of induction heating and heat treating. Mr. Loveless joined Inductoheat in 1972. His credits include a great deal of "know-how", technical reports and research & engineering publications, including his contribution in several Handbooks published in USA and Europe. Mr. Loveless has been granted 18 US patents with 14 pending and has numerous related foreign patents. His inventions include system design and process innovations as well as power electronic components, circuits and process control strategies. He is a life member of the IEEE Industrial Applications, Power Electronics and Industrial Electronics Societies.

Mr. Raymond Cook was Vice President of Engineering (retired) at Inductoheat Inc. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan, with a B.S. degree from Western Michigan University and M.B.A. from Wayne State University, Michigan. Mr. Cook’s credits include a great deal of "know-how" and he has been involved in the pioneering designs of high-, medium- and low-frequency solid state inverters, load matching equipment, machine and system designs, process control and monitoring systems for a wide variety of induction heating and heat treating applications including hardening, annealing, tempering, stress relieving, shrink fitting and many others. This includes the InductoScan Technology, which has become an acknowledged standard in modern induction scan hardening. Mr. Cook has been with Inductoheat for more than 36 years. He has written numerous technical publications including several chapters for various Handbooks.
