This book offers a comprehensive review of the field of obesity, including basic and clinical aspects. There are four sections covering the history, definitions, and prevalence of obesity, etiology, pathophysiology, and clinical aspects, including evaluation, prevention, and treatment. The stated purpose is to provide up-to-date and comprehensive coverage of obesity-related fields including research and practice aspects, written by leaders in their respective fields. These are worthy objectives. The target audience includes physiologists, nutritionists, endocrinologists, bariatricians, dietitians, applied and basic obesity researchers, psychiatrists, and students in these obesity-related fields. The editors are experts of international standing, and the chapter authors are credible, published authors at major academic institutions. This large, 1012 page-book reflects the aim of comprehensive coverage of the various components of the field of obesity. There are black-and-white illustrations and current references through early 1997. Obesity is obviously a very important field, given the large and growing prevalence of the condition and the associated morbidities, and a comprehensive textbook covering the entire field is most welcome and needed. Ironically, the major criticism of this excellent and useful volume is the inevitable inability to stay current given the extraordinary explosion of knowledge in the field, including important recent developments in the physiology of leptin and pharmacotherapy safety concerns. It is hoped there will be a second edition in the near future that will try and keep pace with developments in the field. This book will be of interest to individualsin obesity-related fields and will be a valuable addition to medical bookstores and libraries.
