This nearly 600-page assortment of prayers, devotions, aspirations, and blessings is the single best on the market. Published for the first time only a few years ago, it is remarkably contemporary despite the many years of history and tradition behind much of the content. Aside from morning and evening prayers (including a sampling of the liturgy of the hours), the book also includes the Angelus, prayers before and after communion, prayers directed to the Trinity, to the Holy Spirit, and to Jesus. Further, the book includes the entire novus ordo Mass (with many prefaces) in english and in latin, devotions to Mary and St. Joseph, and the rite of confession -- complete with a detailed sample examination of conscience. One last great feature is the many-paged section on how to be a better Catholic, with discussions of such things as basic Catholic beliefs; a list of virtues and vices; an explanation of the sacraments; a discussion of difficulties in prayer; and a 'spiritual game plan' for everyday life. All these materials are excellent. Slightly less excellent are the meditations provided for the Stations of the Cross and the Holy Rosary; while adequate and accompanied by detailed instructions, the meditations are not very sophisticated. Then again, they are perhaps perfect for beginners. All in all, this really is the best collection at the best price. This collection by Socias is ideal as a first-communion gift, a confirmation gift, a going-away-to-college gift, or whatever, since it is suited to Catholics of all ages. I would suggest only one supplement, which would supply a few traditional prayers missing from Socias, and this is 'My Prayer-Book' by Father Francis Lasance.
