Overview

Hanging off the Poet Tree is a sizable collection of poems written by J.R. Andrew. The poems are accompanied by an explanation that describes the events and feelings that led to the creation of each poem.

The author begins this poetic journey in his teenage years and brings the reader into his adult thoughts. Love and death are the core substance of these poems while serious social issues that have touched the author's life are embedded throughout.

The title, "Hanging off the Poet Tree" was inspired by a suicide attempt witnessed by the author when he was seventeen. With that knowledge it is easy to understand the themes, coping mechanisms and emotions that have led the author to publish his writings.

About the Author

J.R. Andrew is a native Irish poet who writes about human interaction and difficult social issues. As a writer, J.R. embraces the most human of topics throughout his poetry and love is his favourite expression, however he delves into the darker issues within the Irish psyche including themes of suicide and rape.

To know J.R. is to know his poetry for he describes himself as withdrawn and quiet most of the time, difficult to get to know all of the time and always twice removed from the status quo. By being somewhat withdrawn J.R. says it is much easier to write with pure emotion as too much immersion with the masses influences the word.

Although shy, J.R. enjoys reading his poetry to audiences where his soft spoken and eloquent voice relives these poems bringing alive the sentiment within as he intended. This is the first time J.R. has shared his poetry in writing and he says,
"I want people to feel the raw emotion as I feel it".
