I'm a teacher of children who have special needs. I wanted them to be exposed to curriculums and experiences much like their peers (grades 1-2). I purchased this book, included it in my morning circle and was very happy with the outcome! The text made it easy to modify the language and information about Dr. Martin Luther King. The illustrations were engaging and supported the text on each page. My boys and girls are able to share information about the works and ideas of this great American role model!

This book tells us a little about Dr.King's life and why his birthday is a national holiday. Doctor Martin Luther King is known for helping African-Americans get some of the same rights as white Americans. Back when King was alive, everything was separated for black people and white people¿two bathrooms, two water fountains, two schools, etc. But the places that black people went to were not as good as the places white people went to. Black people were also not treated as well as white people. Dr. King inspired many people, of all different races, to join his message of equality. He gave his famous, ¿I Have a Dream¿ speech to a quarter of a million people in Washington, DC. Dr. King preached that change should only come in a peaceful way. He was tragically assassinated at an early age, but his message of peace and equality lives on. This is an important book that reminds us who Dr. King was, what he stood for, and why we celebrate his life and remember him on his birthday.
