After everyone throws enough birdseed to feed the parakeets at the animal shelter for a year at Evangeline and Hunter as they run for their getaway limo, I start collecting the unused net bags and slip them into my purse.

“Need any help?” Hayden asks, holding out his hand.

I stare at him for a moment, like he’s holding forbidden fruit instead of several bags of birdseed. “That would be great.” Opening my purse wide, I nod at him. “Lob them in.”

“That’s the biggest purse I’ve ever seen.” He carefully places the bags inside. “Any chance you got a passport in there?”

“Who carries around a passport?” I ask. Besides me, that is. I always have to be prepared, in case my mom calls at the last minute to fly me out to see her. Never on location, though.

She’s still all about me leading a normal life.

“Hopefully, you do. My apartment is a couple of blocks away, so I figured you can drive me there to get my things, and then off to the airport we go.”

“You want me to go away with you?”

He lifts a blond brow. “The Castillos invited the entire wedding party back to their place, remember?”

Oh, good grief. Yes, I do remember. I’m such an idiot. Why would he want to go away with me anywhere?

Pretending to be confused, I tilt my head to one side. “We need a passport to stay at the Charlotte Hilton?”

He laughs. “No, but we do need one in order to travel to Mexico. I thought we could change up our flight plans and get there early. Are you down?”

“What about my birdseed?” I ask stupidly. I have to be stupid to be worried about that more than traveling to an exotic location a day early with him. “The shelter could use it.”

Hayden’s blue eyes gaze into mine for what seems like eternity before he steps back. “I need everyone to gather every bit of birdseed and put it on table five. Rollins will drop it off at the animal shelter in Forrestville when we’re done.”

“Dude. I don’t work for you,” he grumbles.

“What about this lovely woman?” Hayden jerks his thumb at me. “She needs help.”

Rollins’s dark gaze travels over me. “The glasses are nerdy, but the body is banging. Deal.”

“Ignore him. The glasses are just as banging as the rest of you,” Hayden murmurs. “Haven’t been able to get you out of my head since I first saw you walking down the aisle.”

He couldn’t stop thinking about me?

“A shame you weren’t at the rehearsal dinner,” he adds.

I’m beginning to think so, too, and not just because I still feel guilty for letting Eva down by canceling at the last minute. “Ridiculous gerbil-stuck-in-the-heat-vent emergency. I mean, obviously the gerbil isn’t ridiculous, just his actions. Normally gerbils are quite intelligent, but there’s always one in the bunch.” And there’s his cue to walk away from wackadoodle Saylor Dean in three, two, one—

“Workplace hazard. Comes with the territory of being the boss.” He smiles again, and I swear my heart trips in my chest. “So about Mexico . . . want to go early with me?”

“Are you trying to hook up with me?” I ask.
He runs his thumb across his bottom lip, his angel blue eyes turning wicked. “Up to you, sweetheart.”

Another sexy read by Marquita Valentine. This is the second book I've read in the Take the Fall series but it can be read as a stand alone. This book took a awhile for me to find the groove of the characters.... Saylor (great name) was a bit all over the place. She grew on me though & I'm glad I stuck with the story. Hayden was interesting, a hot & sexy ladies man who as a fireman instead of a politician is letting his family down. He struggles with being honest with his father about he truly wants for his life. I like this story of 2 souls that were a little lost & alone coming together & finding love. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Hayden felt the family business came first which was career politicians and had been since the Revolutionary War. Hayden hated that he was being held to a promise he had made when he was barely eighteen. Before he stopped believing politicians could change the world. Hayden was a firefighter captain and loved his job and helt this was her way of serving the people. Hayden had been good lately and had not slept with a woman in three months. Hayden was at his home listening to a senator talk. But then he decided to get something to eat and runs into his mom who introduces him to Layla who was suppose to have been a year behind Hayden in school. After Hayden’s mom left Layla let Hayden know she wanted to have sex with him and they had sex later he learned from his younger bro that she was married and her sister had been a year behind Hayden. Then Hayden’s father calls him up to the center of the room where his father announces Hayden would be running for senator next year. Hayden was not happy about the announcement but he knew it was his duty and what was expected of him. That also meant Hayden had to find a wife and settle down. Saylor’s life had been lonely for the most part she had been the love child of famous actress and a politician who wanted nothing to do with her. But Saylor’s mother had wanted and tried to protect Saylor from the media as well as her father. Saylor runs an animal shelter. Saylor loves animals and Star Wars. Then Saylor is a bridesmaid at her best friend’s _ Evangeline who had married Hunter who was Hayden’s best friend. Hayden and Saylor neet and there is a mutual attraction and the spend the night together then Saylor slips away but leaves a note. Saylor didn’t want to be accused of being around Hayden for his connections. Saylor had felt cherished for that night . Hayden had got totally drunk and didn’t remember the night or his drunken proposal or his marriage to Saylor. Saylor doesn’t tell Hayden about that night. Yet when Hayden sees Saylor she looks familiar to him. Hayden’s father then turns up the pressure and gives Hayden has 45 days to find a wife. Saylor’s father then finds out Hayden and Saylor are married. I really enjoyed it was a fun easy read. This is well written and I really liked the plot. I loved how Saylor remembered getting married to Hayden but she remembers. And she doesn’t tell him yet Hayden knows she looks familiar and he was drawn to her. My heart hurts for Saylor at times for what she had went through. I loved the characters in this story but I do feel Hayden should have stood up to his father . Also Saylor should have told Hayden they were married right away. But I do recommend.

Charming Romance! Hard to Fall by Marquita Valentine is the fourth book in her Take the Fall series. I have not read any of the prior books, and I had no difficulty following the story or falling in love with the characters. Saylor is the love-child of a politician and an actress; she doesn’t know who her father is, and she distances herself from her mother in order to fly under the public’s radar. She is smart, independent and industrious. Her passion for Star Wars and her quirky outlook make her funny and lovable. She cranks up her usual quirkiness a few notches whenever she feels the need to escape a social situation. Saylor finds it easier to push people away before they have a chance to abandon her. She isn’t the only one trying to hide family connections. Hayden, the dreamy captain of the fire department, comes from money and he is the son of a powerful politician. This man of honor adores his momma, cares for his firefighting family, and respects his family’s history. They’re great individual characters, but together, you can’t help but love them. When their respective best friends’ wedding brings them together, the champagne and tequila start flowing, and all caution flies out the window. Too bad only one of them remembers just how impulsive they were after the wedding! “I don’t think we’re that different, you and I. We both want love and acceptance.” I loved Ms. Valentine’s phraseology. Humorous terms like “alphahole” made me erupt in laughter while reading. From Georgiana’s grace to Jonathan Sterling’s divisiveness, the secondary characters are memorable. Hard to Fall is well-written and perfectly paced. Between the main characters’ secrets and the small plot twists, this sweet romance is a page turner. I adored this low-drama, high passion read; it is a heart-warming escape that will leaving you wishing for your own hunky firefighter.

I loved Hard to Fall by Marquita Valentine! It is the fourth book in her Take the Fall series. Hayden Walker comes from a family that has career politicians dating clear back to the Revolutionary War which he wants nothing to do with. He's not his father, grandfather or great-grandfather. All he wants to do is be a hardworking fire fighter and on his downtime enjoy life to its fullest. Saylor Dean is kind of quirky and loves anything Star Wars. She owns her own animal shelter and has worked hard getting where she is. She never expected Hayden to notice her let alone be attracted to her, but that is just what happens when they go to Mexico to celebrate their best friends' wedding. I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

I love this series! Actually I have loved every book I have read by Marquita Valentine. She knows romance and how to tantalize the reader to completely suck you in. This book is a fun, quirky read that offers characters so different from the rest. They are perfectly matched with Hayden and Saylor. Different, yet they completely belong together. Hayden is the only one that understand the quirkiness of Saylor and he keeps coming back for more. Hot and sexy with delicious twists, Marquita Valentine brings us this amazing standalone that is so beautiful and delightful to the every end. Chalk up another one for the books and a steamy one you need to read for a wonderful diversion. So good!

Hard to Fall is a politically charged romance that puts an incredible spin on many romantic troupes. Hayden and Saylor meet at a friends wedding and are whisked to Mexico for a second reception. Hayden get really drunk and wakes up the next morning without remembering the wild night they spent together. When Saylor and Hayden return to their real lives they begin to see each other and find out that they have a lot in common. How will their story play out when all secrets are revealed? I won't lie... I loved this book. Saylor is one of my top ten heroine in romance. I love her geeky, awkward self and found Hayden to be her perfect match. I also love almost any book featuring hot firefighters! Fans of quality romance will enjoy this book. I was given a free copy for an honest review.

Amazingly Good...I loved every word 5+ stars! I just loved Hayden Walker and Saylor Dean together. Saylor is quirky, feisty, and has a big heart when it comes to abandoned animals. And Hayden “gets” Saylor, although, not the usual type of woman he goes for, but she’s a breath of fresh air, one who sees Hayden for the hardworking fireman he is, instead of a senator’s son with ties to a powerful political family. Not since Blue Bailey from SEP’s Natural Born Charmer have I ever girl-fanned over a heroine. I giggled over her nerdy antics, spouting phrases from Star Wars and Harry Potter in place of emotional descriptions. Hilarious and brilliant! And Hayden, he’s a gorgeous, hunky man candy with quite a reputation. Though he can’t remember the drunken escapade that happens right after his best friend Hunter’s wedding, he can’t seem to get Saylor off his mind. Oh my gawd, the reveal of what happened in Tijuana between Saylor and Hayden is priceless, and Ms. Valentine had me chuckling with delight when Saylor finally reveals that secret. Throw in a conniving senator, an ageless actress, wonderful secondary characters, and this is one story I couldn’t put down until the end. It was that good. Hard To Fall is the first book I’ve read by Marquita Valentine, and so glad I did because now I’ve found a new author. It’s filled with humor, witty dialogue, and all the emotional feels my girly romance heart can contain. Yup, it has everything I look for in a romance, imaginative, solid plot, well-developed characters you learn to love, emotional romantic connection between our lovers, and the HEA. Ms. Valentine’s writing is fluid and the execution of the story is wonderful. Hard To Fall is a must read, and one I highly recommend. 4.5 Star Review Once I started I could not put this book down. It's an easy book to read, it's a story I call my holiday reads. The characters are easy to fall in love with, both are strong and have depth. Saylor and Hayden meet at their best friends wedding, they are having great time together add in a few drinks they end up getting married but the problem is Hayden can't remember it ....Saylor only tells Hayden they are married after a few dates and some family blackmail regarding his job and his fathers political career wishes for him. Saylor's father also comes out of the woodwork and threatens to take away her animal shelter if she doesn't help him. Both of these guys come from a political background but neither know that about each other until the threats start. I love these characters, Saylor is loyal, independent and quirky and what can you say about Hayden the hot fire captain who just wants to enjoy his job and life without the politics. Great read

I enjoyed how the attraction between Saylor and Hayden popped at the beginning. Although it took a while for the couple to share all their secrets, their acceptance of each other was refreshing. They trusted each other, forgave mistakes quickly. The ending was not quite what I was expecting but it was interesting. I received a copy of this story through Netgalley, and this is my unsolicited review.

I was given a gifted copy by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Hayden is a firefighter and he loves his job. However, he is also the son of a US senator. He made the promise to enter into politics when he was eighteen and his father hasn’t forgotten it. Saylor is the owner of a shelter for stranded animals. Her mother is an actress and his father is a US senator too -in fact, Hayden’s dad enemy- who has never been interested in claiming her as his own. The book is well-written, in spite of the silly expressions and play on words which remind of a teenager. I like Hayden a lot; he is funny, caring and honest and he sticks to his wife no matter what. At the beginning, I didn’t like Saylor but little by little you can see how good she is, loyal to his husband and caring for him. I think there is a lack of some side stories for example about some of the animals in Saylor’s shelter, or some discussions between Hayden’s father and mother where we could have seen their love for each other. I think that would have given the book the exact point to have five stars. All in all, I enjoyed the book.

A charmingly sweet and sexy read. As the illegitimate daughter of a politician and a famous Hollywood actress who was determined to protect her from her father and the media, Saylor Dean grew up loved by her mother but feeling a bit insulated, unwanted and without a family to call her own. Mostly, her friends are of the furry variety at her animal shelter, but after meeting and having an unbelievable night with Hayden in which he makes her feel cherished at her best friend’s wedding she doesn’t want to let him go, even when he doesn’t remember his drunken proposal and marriage. At barely eighteen Hayden Walker had promised his senator father he’d follow in his footsteps. After years of serving the public out of the spotlight as a firefighter and proud of the fact that he’s gotten his position as captain on his own merit without his family’s money or name, he isn’t interested in the pursuit of politics much less having to settle down for it. But when the sexy Saylor leaves an impression after his best friend’s wedding can he convince her to help appease his father? Will the secrets she’s keeping from him shatter any hopes of a happy future together? After reading several of her books, I can count on Marquita Valentine to deliver sweet and sexy stories with quirky heroines and alpha male heroes who adore them. Hard to Fall delivers just that. I just loved Saylor, she was adorably geeky and such a nice caring and loving person even if a bit naïve and insecure with too many secrets. I really felt for Saylor and her lack of self-worth, she felt invisible and I really wanted her to be with someone who loved every single odd bone in her body. I’m probably in the minority but her love for all things Star Wars, Star Trek and pop culture in general, made her instantly likeable to me and provided me with loads of laugh out loud moments. Hayden was a harder sell altogether. I wasn’t a fan of him not standing up to his father nor his womanizing and partying ways, but I’ve always appreciated reformed bad boys. He also has good work ethic and level head especially regarding his family’s money and I really liked that even without him remembering his wild night with Saylor, on some level he knew she was special to him and pursued her almost relentlessly which was sexy and fun to watch. Saylor and Hayden made me laugh and smile and fan myself as they get to know each other. Their relationship and plot in general was unconventional and moved a tad fast, but they both want love and acceptance, they have incredibly hot chemistry and they’re great together being what the other needs while falling in love with each other. One last non romance or even plot related comment, I really REALLY appreciated that Marquita mentions organic and environmentally sustainable products. I don’t know if it’s because it’s “en vogue” or if it’s a cause true to her heart, but I believe that being conscious about our environment and including it in her work is commendable. Hard to Hold is book #4 in the Take the Fall series by Marquita Valentine. It is a sweet and sexy contemporary romance. Told from both points of view that has a hearts and flowers epilogue ending.

4.5 Stars! Hard to Fall by Marquita Valentine has a lot going for it. To begin with, both the hero and heroine are goodhearted, intriguing, and full of surprises. Secondly, the supportive characters are well-conceived and lively. Lastly, the political drama continually unfolds into an ending that will make you smirk and smile at the same time. Haydon Walker is a well-respected firefighter and the son of a Senator. Before he even finished high school, Haydon promised his dad that he would follow in his footsteps one day, and now it is time for Haydon to pay the piper, or as a compromise, just get married. A very difficult decision made easier by Saylor Dean, the bridesmaid at a wedding they both attended. Saylor runs her own animal shelter, in addition to being the daughter of a famous model/movie star, and a political player that does not care to acknowledge her existence. The night of their friend's wedding, Haydon and Saylor get drunk, get married and subsequently spend a night of bliss together. It is too bad that the Haydon has no recollection of the happenings the following day. However, the spark they shared begins to evolve as they become friends, date, fall in love, and discover who they really are. This is an intriguing love story with an interesting plot and nicely-defined characters. Ms. Valentine is an excellent storyteller and her words kept me engaged from beginning to end. If you enjoy a novel with a strong heroine, an eclectic group of caring friends, and a hero that just won't give up, then check out this book. Overall, this is an exciting read that twists and turns in all the right places. Complimentary copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley.

This is book four of the series but was my first and I didn't in any way feel lost. Hayden is a firefighter and the son of a prominent senator. Saylor is the owner of an animal rescue and the hidden daughter of another prominent senator. They meet at a wedding of mutual friends and hit it off. They have an incredible night together and get married but in the morning Hayden remembers nothing. The truth comes out when Hayden's father gives him an ultimatum about his future. I loved Hayden and Saylor's interactions with each other. While I wish she didn't keep their marriage for as long as she did, I loved the progression of their relationship and the protectiveness Hayden felt for Saylor. I'll definitely go back and read the other books in this series! *This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy.*

Adorable! When I first met Saylor in an earlier book, I so hoped she would get a story of her own. Marquita Valentine didn't disappoint me on that, or with the actual story. Saylor is such a fun and quirky character and Hayden is definitely a great match for her. While a lot of the storyline sounds like it could be the same from a hundred books, Ms. Valentine has such a unique way of telling a story that it comes out totally different. I adored this book!

I loved Hard to Fall, by Marquita Valentine, the third book in her Take the Fall series. This book exemplifies Valentine’s creativity, sexy and sensitive scenes, as well as her outstanding writing ability. This is fun loving, hard working firefighter Hayden Walker’s story. Hayden isn’t ready to follow his footsteps and run for political office. While celebrating his best friend’s wedding he marries Saylor Dean, the naughty bridesmaid, without remembering any of it or even her. Saylor is the unwanted love child of another well known politician. She has always felt alone and unloved. Her happiness is found in the animal shelter she runs. Then she meets Hayden at her best friend’s wedding. During their impetuous and unforgettable night together, Saylor feels desired like she never has before. The problem is that Hayden doesn’t remember his drunken proposal, their hasty marriage, or even her. When the truth comes out, it is harder for Hayden and Saylor to actually fall out of love than stay. This was a fun and entertaining story with loveable characters that you want to support and cheer on hoping for that happy ending. The characters were well written, authentic and complex. The story line was riveting and kept my attention to the very end. I genuinely enjoyed reading this book and had trouble putting this book down. I really enjoy reading books written by Marquita Valentine and I highly recommend this book to other readers. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Saylor Dean is a quirky and ditzy joy and Hayden Walker is the firefighter who hooks up with her at the wedding of their friends and cannot get her out of his mind. There is something about her, but what is it? These two are a joy to get to know each other and even though Hayden cannot remember their whirlwind time together, it was memorable enough and (legal enough) to keep him coming back for more. There are many twists and turns and when you add in a movie star mom who pops in to save the day and a politician dads who try to rule the world and create scandal at every turn (considering one of those dads is a secret) it is a wonder things turn out okay. Star Wars speak and panic attacks aside, this was a very good book and I enjoyed it a lot!

I found this to be an excellent read. Very enjoyable story with great characters and pace. Hayden is happy with his simple life working as a captain for the fire department, unattached, and free. His father doesn't agree. He was always suppose to follow down the family path and enter politics and now he's pressuring Hayden to step up and run for office. Saylor is a free spirited, quirky soul who runs the local animal shelter. These two meet at a friends wedding and have one incredible night. Too bad Hayden doesn't remember any of it. The next morning when it's clear to Saylor that Hayden remembers nothing of what happened the day before she doesn't bother to fill him in. Although there is one little thing that happened that he probably should know about. One little detail like the fact they got married. Hayden doesn't understand why but he knows that he is inexplicably drawn to Saylor and the more time they spend together the more he wants from her. How will Saylor ever tell him the truth now?? A fun easy read with little angst, lots of passion, and a bunch of humor. Definitely a book I would recommend.

I absolutely adored this story!!! The characters were fantastic. Especially Saylor, who was endearingly ditzy. I also enjoyed seeing how things are going with Hunter and Eva from "Take the Fall" as Eva was one of my favorite characters before I met Saylor!!! This book has just enough intrigue and angst to keep you wondering what is going to happen next, along with some super sweetness and some very hot, sexy times!!!! Once again, Marquita Valentine has given her readers a fantastic book!!!

I’m not kissing you because I feel sorry for you. I’m kissing you because I’ll go out of my mind if I don’t” Another amazing story from author Marquita Valentine. Told from dual points of view, Hard to Fall follows the story of Saylor and Hayden. Hayden is hard working and loves living a life of freedom. However, as the oldest son in his family, his life comes with certain responsibilities and expectations. Hayden is nowhere near ready for the life that’s been planned out for him and will do anything to avoid it…..Saylor’s life has been anything but easy. All she’s ever wanted is to be loved and feel wanted. Her only source of happiness is the animal shelter that she runs. She had no idea that Hayden was about to change her life forever. Spending an unforgettable night with Hayden will change her life is ways she never expected. The only problem, Hayden doesn’t remember anything about their night together….. Hard to Fall was a quick and easy read for me. I fell in love with the characters the moment I met them and couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next with them. Overall, I thought this book was a lot of fun. I loved the cute geeky moments. There was plenty of laughter and good times. I adored Saylor and Hayden together. I thought they had excellent chemistry and I just couldn’t get enough of them. I couldn’t help rooting for the two them. Hard to Fall is a great addition to the Take the Fall Series. It has just the right mix of angst, drama, romance, frustrating and steamy moments.
