Hardheaded by Kim Law

Construction tip #1: Never anger a hot-tempered woman who knows how to wield a sledgehammer. And right now, Jill Sadler is spitting mad. Her company is competing on the wildly popular show Texas Dream Home, and she intends to give it her all. The opposition: We Nail It Contractors, helmed by the man who once married her…and walked out twenty-four hours later. Jill can’t let Cal Reynolds take this round. Not when she has her foster sisters and years of righteous resentment spurring her on.

Winning the contest would do wonders for Cal’s firm. Getting under Jill’s skin is just a bonus. She paints him as a villain, though Cal had no choice but to leave. Yet being around Jill again—fiery on the outside, vulnerable and warm underneath—is setting off sparks that can’t be blamed on faulty wiring. And the only way to fix the Jill-size hole in his heart is to risk everything and see if this love is built to last…

I adore the The Wildes of Birch Bay series, so was very eager to read more from the author, the begining of a new series and excited to receive an advanced copy from the author for an honest review. While the Birch Bay series dealt with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and how it affects not only the person afflicted with it, but also the family members, in this book, the main character has anger management issues, from past hurts by people who were suppose to love her and guilt. AS in all the author's books, the characters are richly developed. After Blu Johnson, lost her husband and three children in a car wreck, she started fostering girls at her farm, Bluebonnet Farms, teaching them construction along the way. The first three girls were Jill Sanders, Heather and Trenton. As they reached adulthood, they went their separate ways, but eventually came back to Red Oak Falls and created a construction company, Bluebonnet Construction. They have filled a niche, building small hide-a-ways for woman, but they want to expand. However, every larger job they bid for seems to go to We Nail It Constructors, owned by Jill's ex. They were only married for 24 hours, before he left her in Vegas and she took off for Hollywood. Since she came back, she has refused to speak to him, burning with a hatred, that one can only feel for someone they also love. Blu entered them in a reality show, Texas Dream Home and now they are competing against We Nail It. Can these two get over their anger with each other, knocking down the walls around their hearts and reclaim the love they still have? There's even a ghost in the story. What more can you ask for? 1 like

Kim Law creates a great world in this first book in what I hope becomes a long series. This is a second chance romance and Cal and Jill prove that it really is a thin line between love and hate. There is so much chemistry and comedy going on in this book that the story moves quickly, even with several well developed secondary characters sharing screen time. I recommend to anyone who is a fan of Kim Law, loves a second chance romance, or is a sucker for a romantic comedy.

I have never read a modern day romance quite like this. I have read ones that include construction crews, but this one blew those away. I loved that this was rival construction crews, involved an all woman's crew, that it was not just a friendly rivalry but a televised event and lastly that the competing crews held exes. A story can not get more juicy than that. I thought it was hilarious how the author came about this topic to include an all woman's construction crew based on a bad experience with lazy males coming and trying to avoid doing work on her house.  I might have easily foreseen the ending but the journey on how they would figure out how to be in the same room by the end still intrigued me. I want more badly than anything to watch this pieced together on TV after all the chaos going on behind the scenes. I want to see which scenes they truly left out or if they ended up including a montage of the tantrums, then the hilarious audio footage that was captured after the countless times that everyone forgot their mikes were still on and revealing deep dark secrets. The home improvement hype is extremely relevant and a hot topic, so Hard Headed is coming at a perfect time. The background elements drew me in and made me love this book. The humor but real insight into issues like Aunt Blu being stuck in the middle of her foster daughter and the boy that had once loved and even married her daughter, but after breaking her heart was no longer allowed to hold that friendship with Blu. Then the strength it takes to confront close ones and get them real help for their issues instead of enabling their bad decisions. This story held depth and drew the reader in like they were part of this broken family which made the reunion even sweeter that all these outside elements fell back into place after the universe righted itself and they got back together.  I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.

When Jill Sadler and her foster sisters enter Into a competition against Cal Reynolds and his We Nail lt Contractors, the stage is set for an all out battle. After all they had been married for one day years ago, but they couldn't agree on their future. Jill is back and bitter. She can't forgive Cal. What will happen now that the are rivals? Jill wants to win Texas Dream Home. Jill is fierce and fiery. Her emotions rule her. I was touched by the trauma she suffered as a child and the way that people talked about her negatively. She was fortunate that Blu Johnson became her rock. Cal may have been her true love but for all his charm he was stubborn and intractable. It took me awhile to warm up to him. His ability to play others bothered me. As he and Jill grew close I softened toward Cal. I love the ghost who helped our lovers come together. Kim Law did an excellent job. Her characters were well written and complex, the dialogue was sharp and sassy and the plot was filled with surprises. I can't wait to see what happens next. I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.

I really enjoyed Hardheaded by Kim Law, the first book in her series, Deep in the Heart series. Think HGTV meets Texas as Jill Sadler competes on the wildly popular show Texas Dream Home against another team led by Cal Reynolds, a man who married her and left her twenty-four hours later. This second chance love story is about two stubborn people, both having made mistakes in the past and hopefully learning from them. I truly loved reading this book and had trouble putting this book down. Ms. Law wrote a wonderful story, with lots of humor, charm and smexy. She drew me in and did not let go until I turned the last page. I highly recommend this book to other readers and I am looking forward to the next book in this series. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

Hardheaded is second chance love story. It is a really good written story about two stubborn persons Jill and Cal. Both of them have made many mistakes in the past and faith is making them do a second chance. A very emotional story with amusing parts that made me laugh, a little a bit of paranormal activity in between and a story which show us that past should be left in the past and not letting it control your present life. I liked both Jill and Cal they are both well develop and likable especially when you really get to know them with all their secrets and insecurities. I liked that the story was not predictable there are some things that I did not see coming. And I loved how did the attraction escalate in too a really hot burning the sheets down hot. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book for Netgelly

Ex-wife (Jill) in competition with ex-husband(Cal), add in three former foster sisters (and partners), foster mother, zany characters (one is Cal's uncle), humor and a reality tv show that would jump start the sister's construction business. With a nickname of She-Sheds all because of a pampered pup named Winston who had his own vacation shed. There are times the cameras are rolling when cast forgets about them. Oh don't forget the ghost. One of the houses they are remodeling is supposedly haunted. There is mild language, a couple of bedroom scenes, but not pages of graphic details. Kim Law's humor and style of writing will keep you turning pages. I only give 5 star reviews for page turning plots, that touches my heart, emotions or has me laughing. This one touched my emotions (tears on my cheeks), laughed, and couldn't put the books down for wanting to see what else everyone was up to. I highly recommend this book if you love contemporary romance with humor and a book you will remember with a smile. I've never been disappointed in anything that I've read by Kim Law. Highly recommend this author to one and all. I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.

This is the first book in Kim's new series and although it's different than her most recent books, it's still a must read! Kim always does a fabulous job with her characters and story lines and the same holds true with this book. Being a foster mom, I love that she wrote about a foster family, family made from the heart!! There's love, humor, real life issues and second chances! Looking forward to the next book!! I received an ARC from the publisher and am voluntarily leaving my unbias review.

A new series from Kim Law, Deep in the Heart, starts with Hardheaded. Love the premise of the book: two competing construction crews on a reality TV show. Nothing new, right? Except that the hero and heroine of this story are ex’s. Enter Jill Sadler and Calhoun Reynolds. At its heart, I’d have to say the story is from the “female” construction crew perspective which makes the storyline fun, IMHO. There is a lot of backstory to cover, telling us all about how “the girls” grew up, their struggles, etc. It also introduces us to their adopted home town. I would think the rest of the series will be about Jill’s foster sisters. Jill and Cal are the focus of Headheaded and they have some fun head-to-head run ins! Loved how they tried to one-up the other on the show. Made for some interesting scenes. Jill had some very big self-esteem issues to work through and to me, so did Cal. It wasn’t until about halfway that I felt they actually started to deal with them and made the story interesting. I especially loved the scenes inside the house Cal’s company is renovating (on the show) but you’ll have to read it yourself to enjoy – no spoilers from me. The story about Jill’s family is pretty special and I loved ‘Aunt Blu’…she is just as I’d imagine a well-meaning southern, nosy ‘aunt’ would be. And definitely has a mind of her own! I’m hoping that the next book, which won’t have to set up a backstory, will bring us the “heart” of the story at a much quicker pace. I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.

"I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.” Hardheaded Another good novel from Kim Law! Story line is about two construction crews male and female with a twist of ex's. both competing on tv for best house. Cal gets house that is haunted. See how spirit plays roll in getting them back together. And there everyday family problems that mess with their life. Cal and Jill or both very stubburn. But as saying goes third time is a charm. A very easy read to set back and enjoy. Will purchase this for my own collection.

Girl Power, with an all girl construction company, Bluebonnet Construction which is owned by three foster sisters, Jill, Trenton and Heather. Their foster mom has entered them into a TV reality show. where their competition is Jill's ex husband Cal's, company, We Nail It Contractors. Lots of conflict and banter between Jill and Cal, will keep you turning the pages. A second chance romance between Jill and Cal, since their first marriage only lasted for 24 hours with a misunderstanding. Loved how Jill was so strong. while working through her abandonment and anger issues. A great start to a new series, loved the secondary characters. Can't wait to read their stories. I highly recommend this story.

I really like Jill and her foster sisters. Jill has always had a temper and that is one of the things that attracted Cal to her. He really likes seeing her in a temper. Jill hasn't spoken to Cal in a long time and he is trying his best to make up for the hurt he caused her when he divorced her after being married for 24 hours. Now Jill and Cal are competing on a renovation show and she will have to talk to him at some point, won't she? It seems they just hurt each other instead of getting over the past. As they try to find their way back to at least being friends, they have some help from their friends, family and even a ghost.

Hardheaded but Warm-hearted! When Jill Sadler and her 2 foster sisters’ company, Bluebonnet Construction, are chosen to participate in the reality TV show, Texas Dream Home, they are hoping to get some much-needed exposure to elevate their company from “she-shed” builders to full-on home remodeling and reconstruction. Little did she realize that their competition would be their local nemesis, We Nailed It Contractors, headed by Calhoun Reynolds, her despised ex-husband. Jill hasn’t spoken to Cal in 12 years: not since he dumped her 24 hours after their Las Vegas wedding, nor in the six years she’s been back home in Red Oak Falls, Texas. Cal, though, has communicated with her by under-bidding Bluebonnet on any job he could. The competition might be the way for Jill to finally beat Cal and exact a little revenge. But when hammers start swinging, the passion and attraction these two have for each other overcomes the lingering anger and resentment. And everyone around them – family, friends, television crew members, and even the ghost of a woman that owned one of the homes being rebuilt – all conspire to get these two back together. On top of being a downright good story, there were several elements that I really liked. The story is set in my home state, and although I love reading stories set in exotic locations, I enjoy “coming home” as well. Next, as one of the many addicts of the house remodeling, DIY, house flipper television shows, I thought it was fun that the story would center around one of these. Then, there is the women vs. the men nature of the competition. One of my favorite of the shows on right now is Texas Flip and Move. Oftentimes, this show features this very same element pitting either The Snow Sisters or Gary’s Girls against The Lone Wolf, Randy Martin. (I love them all.) I recommend this book for any contemporary romance readers especially those that enjoy stories that feature second chances at romance. SPOILER: I think it is interesting to note that the book features a very timely issue. Currently, every news program is running the story of Hollywood mega-producer, Harvey Weinstein, and numerous allegations of years of sexual harassment of actresses. Our heroine in will reveal that the final reason she returns home is after a similar incident happens to her. I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher. This is the first book in a new series for Kim. I knew a bit about the book going into it, the female construction company and that made me want to read it more than anything. I love tough women that can handle themselves and stand on their own two feet. So we meet Bluebonnet Construction. Made up of 3 foster sisters: Jill, Heather and Trenton. All raised by Aunt Blu. They do have other female employees and they also have been raised by Aunt Blu. They live in Red Oak Falls Texas and are well known for building she-sheds. They love what they do and would love to expand but still want to make people happy. There is another construction company in town called U Nailed It. Run by Cal Reynolds. They always get the jobs that Bluebonnet bids on. Cal Reynolds is known for his charm and happens to be Jill's ex-husband. Mind you they were only married for 24 hours before Cal left Jill in Hollywood and headed back home to Red Oak Falls. They haven't spoken in 12 years either. Aunt Blu signs the girls company up for a reality T.V. show in their town. They are picked to do it and their competition is none other than U Nailed It. Each company has to renovate a house in 6 weeks. Then they will be judged and the winner will be picked. The book leads us through this competition, so many things happen. Jill and Cal deal with each other. There is a ghost living in one of the houses. (I loved this part) There is anger, hurt feelings, laughter and tears. Jill and Cal will learn a lot about themselves and why things happened the way they did, they will also learn that the past has to be dealt with before you can move into the future. There is a lot of emotional baggage for these two to sift through. They have to grow and figure what they want. And do a lot of it while cameras are rolling. When I first started reading this book I felt like it was moving slow, and I was worried since I have loved everything that Kim has written so far. But I figured out that it was my fault for reading it when I was too tired. I started it over the next day and was so happy to be reading it. Kim always gives us so much heart, emotion and touching stories. This one is definitely a winner in my book. I am waiting to see what she does with the other girls, it should be fun. “I received a free, advance copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.”

Great read! I love the three female characters and their foster mother, Blu. This story centers around Jill and Cal. Competitors in a construction contest and ex’s ( having had a 24 hr marriage). Lots of fun dialogue and painful, but compelling history. Hope Ms Law shares the other ladies stories with us soon! I voluntarily reviewed this advanced reader copy and I have not been compensated in any way.

This book was so much fun to read! Jill and Cal are amazing characters and their past was intriguing as it revealed throughout the story. This is a great small town romance with a nice touch of HGTV thrown in. The going is tough for the all woman construction firm of Bluebonnet Construction but it looks like things are looking up when they are selected for a reality show pitting them against another firm in a renovation contest. Things really heat up when it turns out the company they are competing turns out to be Jill's ex-husband Cal's firm We Nail It! Let the real fun begin. This one is a must read for anyone who enjoys small town romances. I highly recommend it.

Kim Law never disappoints. This is the first of the Deep in the Heart series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This book is about Jill Sadler whose company, Bluebonnet Construction, is competing in a reality show called Texas Dream Home. Her competition is We Nail it Contractors, owned and operated by her ex-husband whom Jill hasn’t spoken to since she returned to town several years ago. Bluebonnet Construction employs only women and most of their jobs have involved building ‘She Sheds’. They fell into that particular niche by accident and Jill is hoping that by competing on this show they will demonstrate they are capable of larger projects. Jill and Cal’s story checks all the boxes. We get to find out why Jill and Cal split up, there is a ghost with a sad love story and the usual misunderstandings that go along with finding your way to happy ever after. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. I received a free advance copy of this book in exchange for my unbiased review.

You can never go wrong with a book written by Kim Law, and this one proves that point. Hard Headed is the start of a new series that promises to be a very good one. Jill Sadler, is one of three foster sisters that own a construction company. They end up chosen to be one of two competing companies for a TV show titled Texas Dream Home. The other competitor is Cal Reynolds and his company. A man that was her husband for a day. These two have a truckload of issues between themselves and by themselves. For the 6 years Jill has been back in town. She has not spoken to Cal but this show changes all that . The anger she is known for and her perspective of their past also changes. Both had abandonment issues as kids and these issues have molded them into the individuals they are today.
Will they be able to heal and find each other again, or will they miss their second chance at love? The author gives us a well developed plot, complex main characters and secondary characters that are not only interesting but potentially will have a story of their own. Looking forward to them. I was gifted this copy by Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
