We are a complacent lot-us Americans. Uninvited and unwanted the "illegals" swim the Rio Grande. Ask these invaders why they come. Knowing the law enforcement agencies have been ordered to stand down and back off, they answer, "It is our right. It is our Land." So they come-and do vile things. They rape. They murder. They flood America with drugs. Harlan McFadden is an ex-husband, an ex-lawman, and soon to be an ex-father. On a rare week-end getaway, his seven year old daughter wonders off. He panics and desperately searches for his only child. Following her cries for help, he races towards something no father should ever witness. An illegal, teeth brown and rotten, grins at the father and snaps the child's neck. Harlan McFadden remains an ex-husband. But now he is an ex-father. Soon he will no longer be an ex-lawman. Harlan McFadden becomes a law unto himself, and the laws he enforces are ones of his own making.

Dealing with a dark subject, this book will evoke your emotions on all levels. Harlen McFadden is a good man, who has just been too nice. As a result he is handed a raw deal by life itself. Anyone looking for a book with a different slant, this one is for you.

This story, based on the murder of a seven year old girl, is the polar opposite of Mr. Murray's first two novels and I hardly ever read books of such nature. But, l readily admit it had a profound effect on me. Emotions I have never had to deal with  flooded off the pages. He pulls no punches, offers no apologies, and states his own opinions of  the way he sees things. Obviously, he tells the story the way he wants it told.  Although an emotional read,  it helped me to accept the gruesome truth  bad things do  happen and that far too many  people who do those bad things often go unpunished.

As a father myself, the title of this book caught and held my attention  like a vise. It told me, without opening a page, there was a hard ride waiting within. So, I picked it up and put it down a number of times before I decided to open it,  all the while wondering what I would do to revenge the death of my one of my children, if,God forbid,it ever became necessary to find out. This story is a modern day work set in Texas. It will slap you in the face and pound you in the gut. And that first page trapped me. I was caught. If you are one of those readers who will not flinch at the hardness of this hard hitting book, I dare say you might not have a sense of right and wrong in you. If you think you can handle almost every emotion, you might just be fooling yourself. Drugs, crooked lawmen, drug cartels powerful enough to challenge Americans at its highest level, will leave you wondering how did we Americans become so very, very complacent.

Already a fan of Mr. Murray's I was pleasantly surprised and shocked at the same time to read the emotional story of Harlan McFadden. From the beginning, you can feel everything this man goes thru, both good and horrible. This book will stir some very deep emotions in everyone, and provides much to think about regarding parenthood, justice, and the current state of our country. Well said Mr. Murray, well said...

Imagine this - from afar, a father watches an illegal immigrant, a member of a drug cartel, cold-bloodedly murder his daughter. Realizing no one cares that his child has been slaughtered, nor will anyone help him, he must seek revenge on his own.  A 5 star read if ever there was one, the story is gritty, and will wreck your emotions.

What can I say, I'm at a lose for words. It was just so good..I enjoyed it all and reached a point when I did not want to lay it down. Some parts funny, some sad, some mad, some I don't even have a word for. I'm sure we each have at least known someone that something close to this has happened to or maybe as has been the case here has happened in the area and you know small town, you know somebody connected if not the victim personally. I absolutely marvel at your creativity..I cannot imagine what it would be like to create that story with the details of every scene and have command of the language to paint the picture. I'm looking forward to the next book.
