Harry and the Terrible Whatzit by Dick Gackenbach

When his mother goes to the cellar and doesn't return right away, Harry shoves aside his fears to search for her and confronts the terrible two-headed whatzit. "A monster more funny than scary will help alleviate childhood fears of the dark, and Gackenbach's large, reddish-orange and dusty-brown drawings add verve to the text." -- Booklist

I read this book to my children ALL THE TIME. It was their absolutely favorite! I made voices for all the characters, and after a while, they would recite it as I read it. I left it outside one day....it rained, and I felt so bad, I had to buy a new one. They are 32 and 30 now, but I still have both of them safe for any little babies I ever get the chance to read it to!

My mother had to read this book everynight to my brother, I use to recite it by heart. It's been over 23 years since I last read it, the book was lost and I could never find it at bookstores. I will always remember Harry telling his mother 'don't go into the cellar.' It's a great book and one that I plan to add to my collection for my kids to read - now that I know who the author is.

As a teacher I use this book each year, usually around Halloween. After reading it to the class we discuss "our Whatzit" (what makes us afraid) and then write a story about our Whatzit, what we think it can do to us, and how we can get rid of our Whatzit. We all have fears and this helps students understand how to overcome their fears.
