Classic cocktail meets holiday tradition, compliments of Stefani’s mom, Garna, who took the margarita and dressed it with a splash of festive red. Whether you are making a single glass or a pitcher, the ratio of the ingredients stays the same. Use more lime juice if you prefer a tart margarita or more pomegranate juice if you prefer it sweeter.
MAKES 4 DRINKS
1 cup of your favorite tequila
1 cup triple sec
½ cup fresh pomegranate juice (from about 2 pomegranates)
½ cup fresh lime juice
Large-grained salt such as kosher or flake salt
Handful of pomegranate seeds, for garnish
Combine the tequila, triple sec, and both juices in a pitcher and stir thoroughly. Pour the salt onto a small plate. Rub the lime slice around the rim of each glass, and then dip the rims in the salt. Pour the margarita over ice in the salt-rimmed glasses. For a seasonal festive touch, garnish with the pomegranate seeds.
HERB & HIVE LIP BALM
It’s fun to make your own lip balm from the garden. And if you keep bees, this is also a great way to use your beeswax.
MAKES 3 TO 5 TINS
3 tablespoons calamintha-infused olive oil
1 tablespoon beeswax
Place the calamintha olive oil and beeswax into a heatproof glass measuring cup with a pour spout. Fill a saucepan with a couple inches of water. Set the measuring cup into the saucepan and gently warm over medium-low heat until the oil and beeswax melt together. Stir occasionally to ensure that the beeswax melts completely.
Carefully remove the measuring cup from the pan. Wipe off the water from the outside of the measuring cup so that no water gets into your lip balm while pouring it into its final containers. Pour the lip balm into containers (such as small tins), and secure the lids. Store in a cool place for up to 3 months.

Harvest Unexpected projects using 47 extraordinary garden plants By: Stefani Bittner & Alethea Harampolis The cover of this book is unique. The book is made very well. The pictures in this book is really pretty the food plants make your mouth water and the flowered plants are so pretty and the center pieces and all they make out of both food and flowers is really beautiful and dress up your table. In this book you will see how plants (food) you grow in your own garden are so much better for you and your family then the ones you buy, plus you’ll see your reward of food and flowers growing right in front of you. In this beautiful book they talk about the foods and flowers, many I have never heard of. As you read this book and look at the foods that are good for you for what every reason remember they are grown in other states, countries zones that they may not be able to grow in your zone. It is still interesting to read about the plants and see what they look like and what they are good for your health or fragrance of the flowers. The one that caught my eye were the Australian finger lime, that was so interesting to read about different uses for the finger lime, plus it is a unique fruit. I hope we get them here in Florida so I can try one. I love lime and lemons. In the book they give suggestions how to use the flower, foliage, food plants. I really enjoyed this beautiful book more then what I thought I would I thought it would kind of be like buying the plants and where to plant them. I recommend this book highly for anyone whom likes to see new and different plants and how to use them even for drinks and where they are from. Twenty years ago I studied Herbal Medicine, and then practised for a number of years as a Medical Herbalist. At the time my garden was full of many of the plants mentioned in this lovely book, and although it still contains quite a few, reading this book reminded me of how many of those plants are no longer there – such as yarrow, borage and salad burnet – plants that not only look great but can be so useful. Now having read the book, I also have a list of those that I want to add in – such as quince, lemon grass, black cumin, …. I have already made a start by planting some turmeric in the greenhouse. A wide variety of plants are considered in this book – those that have medical, culinary, or cosmetic uses – or all of the above – or those that simply look fantastic and would enhance any garden (or house as flower arrangements). There are beautiful pictures throughout to illustrate each plant, and many of the “projects” or ideas of how to use the plants. A number of the projects I am already familiar with, and several new ones (such as pickled rhubarb and quince paste) are now on my to-do list. This is a wonderful book for anyone who has just moved house, and wants ideas on how plan their new garden – or for those who just want to rejuvenate their existing garden – or those, like me, that feel the need to add in something extra. The suggestions from “Harvest” will provide you with a beautiful and useful garden that you will be so proud to show off to all visitors. There are full instructions on the cultivation of each plant and the environments that they thrive in. Not all plants are suitable for British climates (I would love to have an Australian Finger Lime tree), but there are so many that could successfully be grown here. The book is divided into seasons – early, mid and late – during which each plant is at its best for the projects listed. So there is something to do and look forward to throughout the year. The photographs are wonderful! Some things I knew of and grow, but many others I considered to be either too fragile or too complicated for my gardens. I am all revved up for spring, now.
