Overview

Ga'Hoole is victorious, but far from the great tree, in the bitter ashes of defeat under a full moon, Nyroc is born. And he will be bred to monstrous evil.

Kludd is dead. Nyra, his mate, is determined that her hatchling, Nyroc, will fulfill his father's destiny: the vicious oppression of all the owl kingdoms. But Nyroc is a poor student of evil. A light grows in his heart, fed by scraps of forbidden legend and strange news of a place where goodness and nobility reign. He must summon all his courage to defy his destiny — and the embodiment of evil that is his mother.

This book is from the point of veiw of Nyroc, Nyra's hatchling. People don't usually think about the thoughts of the evil characters which is why this is so unusual. They don't wake up thinking 'what evil things can I do today?' which most people seem to asume. I loved it, but my favorite character died so I didn't give the 5th star. Ugh, why do my favorites always die?

I love Kathryn Lasky's books but this one I hated. Now don't just turn the page and not even read this because you love the author.I do too. Don't read this book if you hate heartbreaking and violent death of a beloved character. Two young owls, one with a sad past that draws you to him and is a low sooty, one the High Tyto's son, become best friends and embark on a journey to find the real truth of what they've always been told. The High Tyto's son, Nyroc,is told to murder his best friend, the sooty,Phillip, as a sacrifice and he refuses. His mother attacks and badly wounds poor Philip (who by the way is tied to a tree.Totally unfair!} At the time I was thinking "Oh this is just to make it dramatic, they'll get out of this and create a new life for themselves." But this didn't happen.Phillip tells Nyroc to fly away and that he{Phillip} is not worth getting killed for.Nyroc's mother rips Phillip's heart out. End of story for Phillip. I personally did not enjoy this book. Sad violence is not entertaining to me.I see why the writer killed Phillip, but I don't think it was necessary to do it with so much violence.

Free will means defying your parents? Seriously? No matter how evil your parents are, they made you. I don't care if Nyra is basically an Owl Nazi, at least her actions proved that she loves her family and her work, Nyroc should at least appreciate the efforts his mother made just to make sure he becomes High Tyto, I mean, think about all the down she plucked!
