Haunted (Michael Bennett Series #10) by James Patterson, James O. Born

Detective Michael Bennett and his family are ready to escape New York for a vacation in Maine-but a shocking scene deep in the woods reveals a dark world of drugs and murder.

Haunted by guilt and shame, Michael Bennett is living with a father's worst nightmare. Reeling from a crisis that would destroy lesser families, the Bennetts escape New York for a much-needed vacation. But it turns out the brochures don't tell the full story; the seemingly perfect community has a deadly vice.

When local cops uncover a grisly crime scene buried deep in the woods, they consult the vacationing Bennett, who jumps at the chance to atone for his own sins. But far from the city streets he knows so well, no one will talk to the big-city detective, and the bodies keep piling up.

A young and forgotten girl is the closest thing Bennett has to a partner in his frantic hunt for the ghostlike perpetrator behind the violence. Will Bennett and his unlikely ally unmask the culprit before anyone else winds up haunted?

I have all of Michael Bennetts books. I have always loved his books. But the last couple haven't been very good. This one was probably the worst. James Patterson has ruined Michael Bennett with his involvement with the nanny that acts younger than his kids. He needs more crime, less nanny, and maybe a more mature girlfriend. So if you want a romance novel instead of crime, you might like this one. Just don't be looking for the Michael Bennett from the first 6 or 7 books.

I don't know who wrote this book. But it isn't like the first Michael Bennett books. Those were crimes with some personal life. Now all they are about is his love life with the childish nanny with a little crime thrown in as an afterthought. It certainly wasn't what I was expecting. James Patterson needs to leave out the Nanny and get back to Michael Bennett as a NY detective with a family of 10 kids and leave the Nanny to someone as immature as she is.

This book was as good as prior Michael Bennett novels. This book contained two stories that seemed unrelated in one book. The first story about Bennett's sons getting involved with drugs felt very out of character and weird and the second part of the book about family going on vacation just didn't seem to fit. Usually with Patterson working with another author it seems seamless but not with this book. I honestly wonder if each of them worked separately on the two different stories. Nowhere near as good as the partnership with Michael Ledwidge.

Money wasted on this one. Thought I was going to read & enjoy a crime and mystery novel by patterson, instead got a book that was more romance, family prayer time, a lot of dumb nanny moments. Did patterson even write one page of this disaster? It's amazing how people lose all integrity and respect when it comes to the holy dollar. after this one, I'm done with patterson, with maybe the exception of his much older books when he took the time and energy to give us a good read.

Honestly, I don't know why every review on this book doesn't have 5 stars. I too, have read EVERY Michael Bennett book by JP. This book is FABULOUS. I could not put it down. I never ever read in bed at 12:45 a.m., but I did with Haunted. Don't miss this book, especially if you love Michael Bennett and family like I do.

Michael Bennett and his family are in turmoil after his son, Brian's, unexpected mishap and resultant charges. Michael now knows what it is like to have someone you love on the wrong side of the law. He hopes and prays for his son but has to accept whatever outcome that is decided. He discovers the abundance of drugs in NYC high schools and is saddened to learn how young and vicious drug dealers can be. His family then goes to Maine for a much needed vacation to try and move forward with their lives. They rent out what the town refers to as the "Ghost House" and they really find it to be "mildew mansion". As usual, Michael gets caught up in what appears to be a crime wave in the small town they are staying in. His former partner, Sandy, recruits him to help her. They find that drugs are way more prevalent than they thought and that even high school kids are not immune in their small town. A homeless girl helps their cause and gives a few leads in order to avenge what was done to her and her mother. There was also the usual mayhem by his big brood. It was interesting to see how Michael dealt with the irony of having to put up with a drug dealer who they suspected of also being involved in murders. Michael did not sit quietly on the sidelines and wanted to see justice prevail. The story flowed well and was quite interesting. I was saddened by some of the turns that it took but overall a good addition to this series.
