For anyone who is familiar with New Orleans, Louisiana, and the people who live there, it is not uncommon to hear about witches, spirits, voodoo, etc. So when our main character Jade enters a local shop after moving there and finds a lovely old woman with magical powers, she spooks her, even though Jade has a unique ability of her own. Being an empath tends to make one more reserved when it comes to opening up and making friends. Most people will tend to shy away and be more nervous and afraid. Luckily, Jade found some great friends when she moved to New Orleans, and a very interesting landlord who also owns the strip club next door, in addition to her best friend who convinced her to move there. But what do you do when a ghost decides he wants to be a part of your life, first scaring you in your own bathroom! Then invading your dreams with a very sexy presence. How do you get rid of him? Just enough romance without overdoing it, along with great friendship and some unique adventure! A great read for everyone.

New Orleans has always had its share of oddities. Some say vampires, we all know about voodoo and those wonderful cemeteries just have to have some ghosts floating about. It seems one has landed in the newly rented apartment of Jade Calhoun. Worse than that, being an empath, she can see him! Moving to the South from Idaho was enough of a culture shock, but ghosts! Plus the hunk landlord has her bothered enough without someone staring her from the ectoplasm world all the time. Her ex-boyfriend (7 years!) basically told her she should be committed when Jade explained to him about the empathetic powers. To add wounds to an already bleeding pain, her best friend, the only one who was ever really trusted with Jade';s secret is now living with the ex. In New Orleans! Kane, the landlord; his pal Pyper and others try to make Jade welcome but there is always something holding her back. She meets a "ghost hunter" who wants to date her but only to take her to ghostly sites hoping for his own sighting. Kane is always there, in the background in his hunky clothes and ornery attitude. Will jade ever let him in? Or anyone? And by the way, who's the ghost? Or is it really ghosts? An excellent story just in time for All Hallows Eve. I hope there will be more from Jade and Kane and their crew of friends. Applause on this book and waiting for more!

Scribble Watch – Brain Candy Book Review: Haunted on Bourbon Street – Deanna Chase This book is fun and gooey, although at times it is a bit tough to chew. Haunted on Bourbon Street, by Deanna Chase is the first book in her Jade Calhoun Series. Written in first person, the tone of the book hints at cute chick lit, but doesn’t go over the top. The romance is sweet and sensual – if not always exciting. The story does indulge wonderfully in the fantastical. Hauntings. Magical powers. A mystery or two. The setting of New Orleans is a favorite of mine, although it isn’t filled out much here. As for the difficult to chew parts: there were rough patches in the writing when the prose is a bit stilted and the motivations of the characters aren’t consistent. That being said, it is an fun, easy read. Brain Candy Rating Yummy flavor: Salt Water Taffy Sustenance: Light Snack

The first in the Jade Calhoun series and full of fun characters and interesting events dotting the landscape of the overall story. Jade moves to New Orleans from Boise at the urging if her best friend Kat. Never mind that Kat 'forgot' to mention that not only was Jade's ex boyfriend Dan living in New Orleans as well, but that he was living with Kat, as her boyfriend. Jade moves into a small, supposedly haunted apartment above a coffee shop & strip club, all of which happen to be owned by the drop dead gorgeous Kane, and populated with a great cast of characters; Pyper, Kane's best friend since college, Charlie, the bi-sexual bartender at the strip club, and Molly, another waitress at the cafe, too name a few. In her search for a way to 'cleanse' her supposedly haunted apartment Jade goes into a New-Age/Spiritual shop looking for a smudge stick. It is here that she meets Bea, recognizing her almost instantly as being 'other' and most likely a witch. Despite that, she finds herself drawn to Bea in a positive way. Since Jade's bead-making classes along don't pay all the bills, she takes a job in the coffee-shop, putting her on a collision course with the mouthwatering Kane. As soon as Jade gets settled she begins to have some pretty steamy dreams, but she can never see her partner. One night that all changes, as Kane moves into the starring role. But Jade, who is an empath, and can feel the emotions of everyone around her, is very leery of starting any relationships, let alone one with her sexy landlord. Being an empath has caused her lots of grief - especially in relationships. To add to Jade's issues it is clear that Dan is still mad at Jade, so Kat is caught between the two, something Jade is well aware of. So she tries to steer clear of Kat to avoid putting her in an awkward situation. Sadly that makes Jade feel even more alone in New Orleans as she works to build a life for herself. Soon that famous New Orleans 'atmosphere' is making itself known as a ghost in Jade's apartment. A ghost that scares Jade, particularly since she learns that Pyper is also being haunted each time she falls asleep. Too bad Pyper's hauntings aren't as erotic as Jade's, or as friendly. The characters are fun, and feel as if they are your friends too, or at least would be your friends if you met them in real life. That special touch is what makes the story as compelling as it is, because you are drawn into the experiences with the different characters, giving the whole book a multi-layered feel which pulls you deeper and deeper in, along with the rest of the group. Easily an enjoyable read, and one that leaves me wanting to know more. More about the past the each character alludes to, more about the unfolding relationships, and more about the paranormal experiences just around the corner, or in this case, the next page.

4 STARS A good book to read the day before Halloween. A good ghost or two haunting two ladies. Jade had just moved from Idaho to the French Quarters in New Orleans. She is teaching how to make glass beads. She sales them on the internet and got a job waitressing at a coffee shop part time to make ends meet. Her boss is Pyper. Pyper partner is Kane and he owns the building and the strip club next door. Pyper is also being haunted, Pyper still strips when they are short but mostly she manages the strip club and cafe. There is pleanty of connections to each other in the story and more connections wanting to be made. Kane is eyeing Pyper but he is close with business partner Pyper. Jade can't keep her eyes off Kane. Their is Ian who is trying to gather evidence of the ghost. Pyper ex from Idaho is now in New Orleans living with Pyper best friend Kat. This has lots of characters that you want to know more about and what their talents they have. The title also has book one so maybe their is more to come or even here. If so I would like to read it. I was given this ebook in exchange for honest review.

I read this book back when it first came out. Listening to it now made it even better! I can't stress enough what you guys are missing. Deanna has created such a wonderful world of characters. I want to live in New Orleans so bad! Kane and Jade make the perfect pair. I liked the scenes where she was teaching the glass making bead stuff. I would like to learn now. Lol. I loved Bea and can't wait to read more of her. The narrator did such a fabulous job on here, especially with all the different voices. Incredible!

I totally loved the idea of this story which is why I decided to read it. Unfortunately it wasn’t what I thought it was. I was under the impression that it was a ghost story with a bit of romance. What it ended up being was a paranormal romance with a bit of ghost story. Don’t get me wrong, I can enjoy a good paranormal romance book, especially when they are well written with well-developed characters and an interesting plot. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case here. So what was wrong with it? Simple. Everything. The characters were one dimensional and never developed. Their basic descriptions were incredibly lacking and not once did I feel like I “knew” them. They felt like strangers to me and to each other throughout the whole book. Jade, the main character, especially irritated me. She was annoying and quite honestly, a hypocrite. An example: Her relationship with Kane gets tarnished when she finds out that the sexy dreams she’s been having about him are in fact, actually him, dreamwalking. She gets upset and feels violated. She mentions how intrusive it is and tells herself that she hates him for it. Bare in mind that she regularly reads people’s emotions and feelings, quite often without their consent, which I imagine if people knew that, they would feel violated. It was almost laughable. She really has no reason to get mad. I wasn’t a big fan of her to begin with and really ended up disliking her after that. The other problem was the location. Supposedly the main character lives in New Orleans, but so little was mentioned about it that I kept forgetting that’s where it was taking place. Given the fact that Jade is an empath, I would have thought the city would be more incorporated into the story and Jade’s gifts would be used to, I don’t know, do something. But sadly, it wasn’t and they weren’t, which I feel was a real missed opportunity on the author’s part. As far as the ghost story, that never made any real sense to me. The ghost that haunts Jade is apparently too stupid to realize that she is not his wife and the love of his life. I had an issue with this because I would think you would remember what your spouse looks like and wouldn’t confuse some random stranger for them, but whatever. There was also so much focus on Jade’s feeling for Kane that the ghost part kind of became more of a distant secondary part of the story that never fully came to light. The romance part of the storyline, which was the majority, was awkward and weird. There was no connection between Jade and Kane. It seemed to progress very quickly but without passion. Plus, since the characters weren’t really developed as stated above, it seemed forced and kind of creepy. Because of this, when it came to the sex scenes, they were uncomfortable to read and I ended up just skipping over those. I did end up finishing the book, but just barely. Some paranormal romance readers might enjoy this quick read, but I cannot say I am one of them

A first book of Ms. Chase that I have read and I enjoyed it. Jade Calhoun is an empath and just moved into her new apartment. Suddenly Jade is visited by a ghost which really spooks her.  Shortly afterwards, Jade is visited again by an unknown ghost and has some hot dreams in regard to her hunky landlord, Kane.   Eventually Jade's coworker, and new friend, Pyper, is terrorized in her sleep by an unknown ghost. Jade is an empath and wants to help her friend, but Jade also wants to keep her secret abilities just that--a secret.   Soon Jade enlist the help of Bea, who she thinks may be a witch, and her friend Kat, who happens to be dating Jade's ex-boyfriend,  along with some other people to help. I really liked this story in that is had just enough magic and mystery combined. It also has some great supporting characters, in which they all helped each other and were there to help when ever a friend was in need. I plan on getting the other books in this series.  I would like to read some books that have Pyper or Kane as the main character or even one that goes back and is centered around Jade and Dan when they were dating.

Great characters and a story full of mystery and fantasy, showing the dark and lighter parts of the always mysterious New Orleans.  I couldn't wait to finish and move on to the next book.

I thought that this was one of the worst books I have ever read. No real character development, the prose did not flow and the plot was predictable. It was a free nook book or I would never have chosen it.

I really enjoyed this paranormal romance/mystery! In the beginning I did feel as if I was walking into a second installment of a series as you are immediately thrown into Jade's life. But, soon enough, the backstory is revealed and you catch up. There was a great mix of empaths, witches, ghosts and more. I found the story to be well written and fun to read.

This is a great Paranormal, fantasy adventure, Jade is an empath with a past and is moving into a new apartment and will soon find out it is haunted. This is just the beginning of Jades journey of a lifetime in her quest to find out what happened to her mother. If you enjoy this book, you will undoubtedly enjoy the rest of the series. Sandra M.

Delight in this engaging story full of dynamic and colorful characters.  The strong female lead is likable, and identifiable, and when combined with a cast as diverse as its New Orleans setting.
