Unfortunately, Hailey is the poor cousin who's being supported by Danica's wealthy family. Hailey's uncle is paying her tuition and living expenses so she can follow her dream of becoming a veterinarian. Self-absorbed Danica makes it clear that Mike isn't available, and if Hailey doesn't stop seeing him, she'll make sure her father stops his support. Meanwhile, the band is preparing its first professional video and an international tour, and while they love Hailey, they don't want anything to do with Danica, the girl who broke Mike's heart in high school. Once he realizes it's Hailey he wants, Mike is all in, but he doesn't realize the pressure she's getting from Danica, who gives her cousin an ultimatum while he's out of the country. Shaw is clearly an up-and-coming romance author who hits some really high notes in this book. Her characters are well-drawn and believable—even mean-girl villainess Danica, who teeters on stereotype. The reader is engaged and entertained with drama, humor, and a near-perfect boyfriend in Mike. That's something of a feat, considering that the book is too long and the conflicts are all external—and almost all in the form of Danica. So when Hailey finally shows some spine and stands up for what she wants—which is all she needs to do, in the end—we can't figure out why she didn't do it sooner. A generally successful, fun romance from an author to watch.
