Description: This update highlights the new advances in technology in medical imaging that have occurred since the 2003 edition and provides a foundation for understanding and interpreting head and neck studies.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a detailed review of head and neck anatomy, embryology, physiology and pathology as it relates to imaging of the head and neck. As one cannot interpret an imaging study without understanding these aspects, this book serves as a nice bridge between basic science and image interpretation. Each chapter includes basic science and detailed images that link the basic concepts to findings on imaging studies, meeting the authors' objectives.
Audience: Although not explicitly stated, the target audience appears to be residents and practitioners in radiology and otolaryngology.
Features: The strength of this book is that it does not merely address how to interpret an imaging study. It addresses the foundation behind the structures in the image and the abnormalities encountered. This edition is in full color, which is extremely helpful in interpreting pathology slides, diagrams, and photos of gross sections, which in turn makes it easier to tie them to the imaging studies. This edition also eliminates discussion of outdated studies, thus focusing on ones that are relevant to today's practice.
Assessment: With its focus on new technology, this is a justified replacement of the prior edition. It provides more than a series of CT and MRI images with arrows pointing to pathology. Instead, it provides a foundation so these studies can be understood and not just recognized.
