Healing a Hero by Skye Taylor

Philip Cameron is a Marine sniper, a leader of men in the field for most of his career. Although decorated for saving the lives of five fellow Marines when their vehicle hit an IED, he doesn’t feel like a hero. His right hand was crushed and bones in his shoulder and arm were broken. He was shot and nearly bled to death, but after several months and surgeries at Walter Reed Medical Center, he turned down a medical discharge and has been reassigned to a desk job in intelligence at Camp Lejeune, where he faces months of physical and occupational therapy to regain full use of his hand and arm so that he can get back to doing what he does best, leading quick response teams in the field.

After the dissolution of her marriage, Elena Castillo is eager to move on with her life and cement her growing reputation as a top-notch therapist for recovering soldiers. She returns to the east coast with her teenage daughter to step into a very desirable position in the physical therapy department at Camp Lejeune, where her very first patient is Gunnery Sergeant Philip Cameron.

But Elena and Philip have a past that could compromise both of their goals.

Fourteen years earlier, home on compassionate leave, Philip fell in love with Elena, but she was young and he was afraid to declare himself until she had time to discover what she wanted in life. Elena fell hard for her older brother’s best friend, but was never sure Philip felt the same about her, so when his leave was up, they parted.

Then 9/11 happened. And Elena discovered she was pregnant.

War tore them apart.

Can its aftermath bring them back together?

This book centers around Elena Castillo and Philip Cameron. Be aware that it’s part of a series. Instead of a 5 , I am giving it a 4 not because of the story, but because the author assumes you have read the previous books. She failed to let us know that Philip was one of 5 siblings, and we get no background on them. She mentions them sporadically and at one point I didn’t know if Meg Cameron was his sister or sister-in-law. Also, at one point, a brother faces an emergency and we don’t know what was the emergency and what was the outcome. Maybe a paragraph of Philip’s family when he is first introduced to us, would solve the confusion. That said, the essence of the story is very touching. Elena was the young sister of Philip’s best friend. Philip is a Marine that comes home for his grandmother’s funeral, and Elena, no longer a child , helps him through his loss. They spend a month together and when Philip needs to return to duty , neither confesses their love. When they meet again ,almost 14 years later, the attraction is there but a lot has happened since then. Now Elena, divorced ,with an almost 13 year old daughter and a well regarded physical therapist, is hired to work with injured military men and women, in a hospital near her hometown. Her first patient is Philip, recently injured during his time in the Middle East. There had been a great deal of misunderstanding, confusion , and seemingly , betrayal after they had gone their separate ways. Besides a very touching story of these two, the author does a wonderful job of making us aware of the challenges our returning and injured soldiers face , not only physically but also psychologically. Well done, Ms Taylor. I received this copy from Netgalley for an honest review.

Although Healing a Hero by Skye Taylor got off to a slow and sometimes confusing start, the second half was completely enthralling. This story is a second chance military romance with likeable characters that are truly genuine and admirable. Physical therapist Elena Castillo and marine sergeant Philip Cameron fell in love fourteen years ago, when Philip was home on leave. They were inseparable during the few weeks they spent with each other, yet never declared their love. Miscommunication, immaturity, and distance kept them apart for a very long time, but they never stopped thinking about each other or wondering what could have been. Now Philip is in Camp Lejeune rehabbing his right hand, after recuperating from many other serious injuries. Philip is a survivor and saved many of his men during his most recent deployment. Imagine his surprise when Elena is assigned to his case. Elena recently relocated to the area with her twelve year old daughter. This new job is very important to her, and a success with Philip almost guarantees her job security. The desire between them is still sizzling, and once their secrets are unveiled they can pursue a forever together. I liked this standalone story, which is the fourth book in Skye Taylor's The Camerons of Tide's Way series. This novel is chock full of twists and turns, a little jealousy, and a love story between two people who truly belong together. Elena and Philip have amazing chemistry and their sexy times are meaningful. Philip's big family adds some fun and acceptance to a situation that may have been very difficult. Overall, this is a solid romance with an ending that will leave you smiling from ear to ear. Complimentary copy provided by the publisher via NetGalley.
