Overview

Heart of Iron by Bec McMaster, Alison Larkin

Lena Todd is the perfect spy. Nobody suspects the flirtatious debutante could be a rebel against London's vicious elite-not even the ruthless Will Carver, the one man she can't twist around her little finger. Will Carver is more than man; he's a verwolfen, and he wants nothing to do with the dangerous beauty who drives him to the very edge of control. But when he finds Lena in possession of a coded letter, he realizes she's in a world of trouble. To protect her, he'll have to seduce the truth from her before it's too late.

Too old for TSTL heroines. Oh dear, I'm only a quarter of the way through and I keep having to put it down because Lena tries my patience sooo much. She really is dim. The plot has so much potential and the hero is swoon-worthy, but the heroine is presented as stupid and resentful rather than rebellious and plucky, which I think was the intention. I'm having doubts she can ever be redeemed, but I'll probably slog on. I really hope I have to eat my words, but I just had to vent.

~Reviewed by SUZANNE & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog I was a little apprehensive about Heart of Iron could it live up up to my extremely high expectations? In short…YES! It absolutely did, it may have even surpassed them. ~ Under the Covers Lena Todd knows she is prey in a den of predators, something that becomes more apparent the longer she moves through the Echelon’s world as a debutante; however, she is also a perfect spy, what Blueblood would expect the supposedly empty headed and flirtatious Lena of working for the Humanists? But it soon it becomes hard to see who is friend and who is foe, and the only time she ever feels safe is when she is around Will Carver a Verwulfen who she has had a tendre for since first laying eyes on him, even if he has always pushed her away. Kiss of Steel was one of my favourite reads last year, it was packed full of action, adventure, romance and some fantastic characters, so I was a little apprehensive aboutHeart of Iron could it live up up to my extremely high expectations? In short…YES! It absolutely did, it may have even surpassed them. Heart of Iron had everything I loved about the previous book, the action and romance as well as a fast paced and interesting plot and has starting developing the world the Bec McMaster has created and added new exciting elements and character in. This book kept me turning the pages not just because I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen between Lena and Will but also because I wanted to see what would happen in next in the dangerous world that they have been plonked in. But the romance…normally I don’t like books about barely 20 and beautiful debutantes but I found I really liked Lena , she may never be my favourite heroine but I also wasn’t overwhelmed with the need to stab her in the eye with something sharp and shiny so it was a win. I did love Will though, he. Was. Delicious. All growly and broody and intense, it gives me the shivers! They made a great couple together, they both saw beneath the veneer that the other showed to the world and made a great couple. This was a fantastic book, with an awesome cover and I can’t wait to see what happens next, I am definitely going to be picking up the next book in the series and recommend you give the first book a try if you haven’t already.

Again, Bec McMaster has a way with words that just draws you in and gets you addicted to her storyline to the point it makes it almost heartbreaking to have to put down the book without finishing it if you haven't done so in one reading. Heart of Iron made me fall head over heels for Will's character. I wasn't fond of Lena at first, but light shines on her towards the end. Love that Bec is able to give you plenty of adventure with touches of Romance and plenty more. Once you start Bec's books, you're hooked, and you can't get enough. If you're looking for a heart pounding ride than this series is for you! Again, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND all of her books.

l like how the author took supporting characters from the first book and made them the protagonists in the follow-up novel. It's not often that an author is able to create a series that doesn't revolve around one character. Great job!

By: Bec McMaster Published By: Sourcebooks Casablanca Age Recommended: Adult Reviewed By: Arlena Dean Rating: 4 Book Blog For: GMTA Series: London Steampunk #2 Review: "Heart of Iron" by Bec McMaster was a interesting London Steampunk #2 read from the 'London Steampunk Series' setting in 1879. This was a great follow up from 'Kiss of Steel' the first book. This novel was of the characters Will Carver (The Beast) and Lena Todd who was a spy for the 'Echelon Blue Bloods.' This author is able to give us 'danger, passion, romance and some secrets that will be explored. "Heart of Iron" was a fast past story with very interesting characters that will kept your interest along with the 'romantic tension, heart pounding action, layered plot along with civil unrest and enemies at every turn' in the read. Would I recommend? YES!

Vampires, werewolves and automotons ~ oh my! Kiss of Steel, the first book in the London Steampunk series grabbed my attention in a pretty big way. Full of great characters, intrigue, sexual tension and a new take on the supernatural. Heart of Iron further strengthened my love of this series. Admittedly, I was not a big fan of Lena in the first book. She was whiny and pined for her past privileged life. Therefore, I was tad bit leery starting Heart of Iron. I could not have been more wrong about Lena though. She is not a whiny little tart who just wants a fancy life. Yes, she enjoys the fancy gowns and balls that society life gives her. But what she really wants is a better life for the lower class and the enigmatic Will Carver to finally realize he loves her. Will is verewulfen. Being inflicted with the loupe is a lonely life. He's never been with a woman and has never worried over that. Except where Lena is concerned. She has crawled her way under his skin but he's terrified to transmit his disease, so avoids her at all costs. As with every good love story, circumstances thrust Will and Lena together. Will become fiercely protective and I loved it. It is exactly what I want from a strong wolfy man. But underneath his fierceness is such a sweet and damaged soul. Lean, oh Lena. What a strong headed and determined heroine she turned out to be. She surprised me time and time again with her tenacity and smarts. Again, nothing at all like anticipated her to be. What sets Heart of Iron apart from Kiss of Steel is the amount of intrigue. There were so many more layers to the politics and happenings and a few new very interesting characters emerged. If you love the supernatural served with a dash of steampunk Old London and a healthy side dish of steamy sex...you'll enjoy the London Steampunk series.

In a world where the vampires are the ruling class (Blood Elite), life can be precarious. But being a spy for the humanist group is absolutely lethal if you make a wrong move, Lena Todd is a young debutante sitting on that razors edge. Lena is looking for her place in the world because the one place she wanted to be, with Will Carver, she felt she was rejected. To say Will Carver’s life has been difficult would be an understatement. Turned by the Loupe virus at the age of 10, he was forced into slavery as a caged show creature. Becoming the “beast”, Will has perfected his persona as a monster to help keep him and his friends safe but his heart desires the one person he can never have...Lena Todd. Not everything is as it seems with political mechanizations and fractured organizations. Discovering the good in bad in both sides, Lena and Will traverse a treacherous web of lies, deceit, and betrayal.  There is civil unrest and enemies at every turn in this exciting new addition to the London Steampunk Series. Bec McMaster brilliantly weaves a world that engulfs your senses and takes you on a fantastical journey. Steampunk, romance, paranormal, suspense this book literally had it all. I absolutely loved this book and was bereft when it ended...wanting more. Looking forward to future stories and the characters I’ve come to adore, Bec McMaster gets 5 Big Stars from me with Heart Of Iron. This ARC copy of Heart of Iron was given to me by Sourcebooks Casablanca in exchange for a honest review. This book is set for publication on May 7, 2013.
