Overview

Raised in a tribe of street urchins, Maddie Grande was taught to be a thief and beggar on the streets of New Orleans. But Maddie doesn’t know her real name or where she came from.

Raised by Dexter Grande, Maddie and her twin “brothers” have recently left New Orleans and moved to the bayou. The twins are rarely there, but Maddie has come to love the swamp. She has learned to fish and trap and sell pelts at the local mercantile.

Maddie longs to change her life but knows that her brothers will never give up their lawless ways. When they kidnap the daughter of a wealthy carpetbagger, the twins force Maddie to hide the precocious eight-year-old while they return to New Orleans to wait for notice of a reward.

Pinkerton agent Tom Abbott is assigned to the kidnapping case in which Maddie has become an accomplice. In a journey that takes them to Baton Rouge, a mutual attraction becomes evident, but Tom and Maddie cannot trust each other.

Will Maddie ever discover who she is? Will her real family ever find her? Will Maddie and Tom listen to their hearts? Or will they choose honor over love?

This was a good christian read. I was pretty excited after reading the first book of this series to see if the long lost sister would be found... as well as to see if there would be a touch of romance in this one as well. After reading this one I am honestly at this point not sure if I will take the time to read the next in the series.... this one I had to drag myself through at times. I was NOT happy with parts of the ending.. but I suppose things can and might change in the 3rd book. In the midst of lies as well as a life built on falsehoods, you will see the struggle of what could begin as romance.. as well as the main character's struggle with feeling as though she is not good enough. It was a heart felt story line... I would recommend you to read this book if you liked the first! CH

The story takes place in Louisiana, 1875 where Maddie Grande lived in a little shack on the Bayou with her brothers that were twins, but they really were not her brothers but had grown up together under the law of the late Dexter Grande. He had picked up street children of the street of New Orleans and taught them how to steal for him. These three were all that was left of the "tribe" as they called themselves. Maddie kept having a bad dream where she and another little faceless girl were ripped apart when they were young. She had no idea who this little girl was and then she also had bad memories of her own. She lived with these two brothers Terrance and Lawrence as she had no where else to go and they were still working the street of New Orleans, making an un-honest living. They would leave and stay gone days at a time and she cooked and did for them, until they brought home a little rich girl name Penelope. Now everything breaks out as they left the little girl with Maddie. The Pennington detective had been hired by a lady to find her long lost sister, but he also got involved with the kidnapping of Penelope. He found Maddie but not the little girl so they both went on a GIRL hunt. Penelope had ran off and no telling what would happen to a nine year old in the Bayou. I really enjoyed the advance copy of this book as I had already read the first in the series "Heart of Stone" and both of them are really good, I love the story lines and the way Jill Marie Landis pulls the charterers together. The copy of the book was sent to me by Zondervan Publishing for my honest review.

Heart of Lies is the second book in the Irish Angel Series by Jill Marie Landis. It is the story of Maddie Grande who grew up as a thief and beggar in a tribe of street urchins in New Orleans. As an adult Maddie and her brothers move out to the bayou. As Maddie hopes for a new life her brothers have other plans and kidnap the daughter of a wealthy man, forcing Maddie to care for her. A Pinkerton agent, Tom Abbott, is assigned to the kidnapping case. Maddie is a thief, Tom a man of the law, but there is an attraction between them that they can't deny. The kidnapping case ties into a woman that Tom had already been looking for, but what will happen when he may lose Maddie forever when revealing her true identity. I liked this book, but I wouldn't say I loved it. It was interesting, but predictable. As this is the second book in a series reading the first would be helpful, but definitely not necessary. This book ties in to the first book, once it gets into the second half. Heart of Lies is a good book for an easy read, or a second book (when you are already reading a book and need a break from it). This is a books that, I thought, centered one the idea of honesty. Being honest with yourself, others and trusting in the power that honesty has. Heart of Lies is a book that I would recommend. Zondervan provided me with a complimentary copy of the novel for review purposes.

HEART OF LIES by Jill Marie Landis This year, I committed to challenging myself with genres of books that I normally don't read. Historical romances are one of them. I am not one to read romance novels, much less historical romances! My first challenge came as I requested Heart of Lies by Jill Marie Landis from Zondervan. My first thought when I received the book was "What have I gotten myself into?" By the look of the cover, I kind of regretted requesting it. That's why the saying goes.never judge a book by its cover! I opened the book thinking, "I'm just going to get this over with." From the beginning to the end, I was absolutely captivated by each character, plot, and motive! In Heart of Lies, Jill Marie Landis takes us on a journey through the heart change that Maddie Grande is confronted with as she is faced with memories of her past. Woven within the story is the hope of love in the most unlikely place, and a painful family reunion. Can Maddie find the truth of who she is while she struggles with the fact that she is a theft? Is Tom Abbot's love strong enough for Maddie to overcome her worst fears? Will Maddie's identity keep her bound to her obligations to the tribe she was raised in? Can Maddie's story ring true in all of our hearts as she is faced with standing at a crossroad of change, having to make some hard decisions? I was provided a complementary book by Zondervan in exchange for an honest review. The views and opinions are my own.

"Heart of Lies" is the newest novel in the Irish Angel series by Jill Marie Landis. This romance novel is set in the late 1800's New Orleans, shortly after the Civil War. The author takes us into the world of a young woman named Maddie whose life is about to be shattered. The problem is, she doesn't know whether it is a good thing or a bad thing. Her past could possibly stand in the way of true happiness, but Maddie doesn't feel she deserves anything good to come her way. Synopsis: Maddie Grande, who was raised to be a thief on the streets of New Orleans, now lives in the bayou. She longs to change her life, but her twin "brothers" have forced her to become involved in a kidnapping. When she falls for the detective assigned to the kidnapping case, her world is turned upside-down. I read this book not knowing that it is the second book in a series. This novel stands alone as a great read but as a series makes it even more enjoyable. Though it has many chapters, it was very hard for me to put down. Very suspenseful. I found the characters very believable and the storyline was very appropriate. The author successfully created a romance novel with Christian values which I very much appreciated. Subtle tones of spirituality are throughout this book. I loved the way the author incorporated it. This book is appropriate for adults. I could see gifting this book to a friend, family member or anyone else you can think of. Maddie's story of learning to forgive herself (because she is already forgiven) is a strong message that many of us struggle with. I think everyone would benefit from this refreshing story. I look forward to going back and reading the first in the Irish Angel Series, "Heart of Stone" and reading the next book "Heart of Glass" when it is released. Disclosure: I have been provided a copy of this book by the publisher without charge in order to review this book. All opinions in this review are solely mine

"Heart Of Lies" takes place in Louisiana in 1875. Maddie Grande keeps having a recurring nightmare, in this nightmare, she and a faceless blond girl are whisked thru the streets of New Orleans by man whom she knows will beat her if she falls behind. While this dream causes terror for Mattie worse still is the fact that she feels sorrow and loss because the blond haired girl promised to take care of Maddie, but Maddie has no idea who she is. Maddie didn't grow up in a family, instead she grew up in a "tribe" that lived in a shadows, earning their keep by stealing and begging. When the leader of the tribe dies, the members scatter and Maddie along with two of her tribe brothers known as the "twins" move to the bayou where Maddie hopes for a more peaceful life. When the "twins" kidnap an eight year old child named Penelope Perkins,in the hopes of collecting a reward they expect Maddie to take care of her. Pinkerton Detective Agent Tom Abbott is in New Orleans hired to look for a woman's missing sister, but is pulled into the case of kidnapped Penelope. The case leads him to the bayou and Maddie, whom he starts having feelings for. Will Maddie do the right thing, and help Penelope get home, and what about Maddie and Tom? Is there a relationship there, or will he have to turn her in as an accomplice to kidnapping? While this book was somewhat predictable, sometimes its nice to read a nice smooth story that while it holds your attention its easy to follow and figure out the ending, and thats how this story was for me.Maddie's character was easy to like, her backstory really had me feeling sorry for her, and I really wanted things to work out for her, she deserved it!.My favorite parts of the story revolved around Penelope. She was such a charmer, and her personality just jumped off the pages. Fans of historical romance with a spiritual message woven in will certainly enjoy this story. This is the second book in the Irish Angel series but can easily be read as a stand alone. I for one will be watching for the next book in the series titled "Heart Of Glass" due out in 2012. I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

First the cover draws you in to this story. Set in New Orleans and starting in the bayou. I can just picture the area where her camp is...with the Spanish Moss hanging everywhere. When the twins get rich quick plan includes kidnapping Penelope ...they didn't realize what they were getting into. She is so precocious and a little handful...you can't help smile! When you learn of the life of the life Maddie had as a Child you become horrified. How could it happen, but this was in the 1800's. She has a nightmare quite frequently, she cannot figure out. Loved the interaction of Maddie and Tom. Can they overcome their differences and find a relationship? Will darling Penelope find her way home? Will the Twins pay for their crimes? You will love finding the answers to these questions and more...read this wonderful book! I was provided a copy of this book by Zondervan, the opinions express are my own!
