Elissa of Tyr is the first heart-bearer to have her own book, and I really really liked being able to just follow one of them for a little bit and see the adventure through their eyes. Traveling with her dragon and her djinn - the conversations between these three were so great - they infiltrate the Emperor's magical shields on the land. This was a very quick read, but it still had a good dose of adventure, and I was able to meet some characters that I'm pretty sure will have some major actions to play in series as we move forward. The magic of the land and the emperor's control over it were also detailed a little more, and his plans and schemes are starting to be revealed to the reader. There are some very interesting ideas here, but I can't say much more without giving some big things away. This is definitely a series of books that need to be read in order! I hope it continues to show as the adventures of each heart-bearer as they make their way back into the world to fight the emperor and his evil plan. I am thoroughly enjoying this unique land and the creatures within it.

Reviewed by Melinda Hills for Readers' Favorite The Emperor is using all his power to prevent witches from exercising their talents and life is becoming much more dangerous for Elissa and the others who are trying to prevent the loss of magic in the world in Heart of Tyr by Susan Faw. In Book Two of the Heart of the Citadel series, Elissa, her dragon, Mysty, and the djinn, Druzy, are battling against new forces the emperor has unleashed to track and eliminate the witches. Even with the help of others with magical abilities and the ancient witches of Castle Ionia, the struggle becomes desperate. The barriers that separate the lands of Gaia must be removed for the witches to have any hope of confronting the Emperor. With their heart pendants, they can perform some amazing spells, but the Emperor has spies all over. Elissa and her friends try their hardest to fight, but will their efforts be enough when such strong forces oppose them at every turn? As Book Two of the Heart of the Citadel series, The Heart of Tyr continues the quest of Elissa as she grows into her powers as a witch. Reading Book One, Heart of Destiny, may help readers make more sense of what is going on, but Susan Faw does a reasonably good job of moving the story line along without too much background. I liked the portrayal of the connection between the triad members and the way the author depicted Aymee and her struggles. Great action, diverse characters and intense emotional engagement keep you wondering what will happen next and how it will all work out. Read them both and you will have the perfect set-up for the next volume where the question of who will win should be answered. Good story!
