Heart To Heart: 12 People Discover Better Lives after Their Heart Attacks by C. Bruce Johnson

Bruce Johnson, the author, is a heart attack survivor and he wants to get the word out. While much has been written about the medical side of heart attacks, little has been written about the emotional and human side of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease.

It really doesn't matter what sparks the sudden Coronary Thrombosis (MI), the medical term for a heart attack. This disease is an equal opportunity killer. Men, women, young, old, rich, poor, famous and people who aren't known outside of their families and workplaces! Dead is dead and by most accounts the one million people who will have heart attacks this year might have been spared had they made a few lifestyle changes. That's what the country's cardiologists are begging for today.

The author interviewed dozens of candidates but he wanted a diverse group of heart attack survivors who represented a cross section of America. He found them and in some cases, they heard about his project and found him. These are their stories of regaining life after a heart attack!

Before reading the fascinating, well-organized stories in Bruce's book, I'd never given thought to the emotional or psychological aspects of surviving a heart attack. Bruce is a natural story teller, and his own heart attack experience left me feeling scared and humbled by what this medical disaster will do to the human psyche. The women and men featured in Heart to Heart all suffered devastating heart attacks and now share their stories with us. Particularly wrenching are the stories about women who simply had no clues about heart attack symptoms in women. That they even survived is a miracle. The stories are inspiring, but frank. One man tells us how profoundly his life had to change after his heart attack, and all the things he misses doing - things he cannot do because they could trigger another heart attack that could kill him. And yet, there are encouraging tales about how people re-shaped their lives into something better for them and their families. If you, or someone you know is a heart attack survivor and is having trouble coming to grips with the after effects, I think you should read Bruce's book "Heart to Heart." Bruce also lists helpful resources at the end of the book that offer support and care to heart attack survivors.

You need not be a heart attack survivor or have heart disease to enjoy and be inspired by the stories of heart attack survivors in Heart to Heart. TV journalist Bruce Johnson, who has a big following in Washington, DC, where he has worked for some 30 years, is known not only for his tell-it-like-it-is reporting, but also for his insights about his subjects, and for his compassion for people in general. This is reflected in the book, in which he tells his own gripping story of life's twists and turns that led to his own heart attack, survival, and transformation. He lets the diverse group of survivors from around the U.S. tell their own dramatic stories of pain and renewed hope, and he sprinkles it with helpful medical information, not jargon. It is a page-turner, an easy read, perfect for your stay-cation or vacation this summer.
