Five Senses, #2

Sometimes life's most simple melodies become songs of love.

Pippa Sanders' life is filled with songs of leaving, longing and loneliness. Since the death of her husband, her children have been her world. She'll do anything to protect them, including encasing her heart in ice until they're college age. She's made a practice of shying away from any relationship that could break her heart when it ends. And it's worked so far.

Clay Mathers has made a temporary move to Granite Pointe, Massachusetts to help with his mother's Christmas tree farm while she recovers from a stroke. Although his long-range plans don't include staying in the small town, a little female companionship during his short residency would be welcome. While on duty as sentry against protestors at a military funeral, he finds Pippa visiting her husband's grave, and begins a campaign to make her into a friend–with benefits.

What starts as a simple affair evolves to something more, something that changes the soundtracks of both their lives. . .the beating of two hearts in harmony.

Hearts in Harmony hooked me right off the bat with the mention of the Honor Guard.  Pippa and Clay become absolutely mesmerizing.   Pippa is a pretty tough cookie who has dealt with the tragedy of her past as best she could, but now she is realizing that maybe she actually hasn't dealt with the past at all and that maybe it is time to.   Clay is helping his mother out for a time and then hitting the road back to his normal life, which doesn't include a steady woman, but Pippa and her darling twins just might change all of that for him, as he falls deeper and deeper in love with Pippa. And then evil strikes and Pippa is made a pawn in an insane man's scheme.  Pippa, however, shows us yet again what a tough cookie she is when she ultimately does the right thing and devises her own plan to turn the tables on the insanity. About 2 chapters into this book I realized this was actually book 2 of a series.  I HATE WHEN I DO THAT.  But there was not enough time for me to go back and read the first book first, so I kept going and I have to say that even though it is book 2 of a series, nothing was lost to me.  I didn't feel like I was missing out because I hadn't read the first book. I will tell you though now that I have read the second book I will be going back for the first one.  Gemma Brocato had just made a new fan!

O.K. Ladies....if any of you are looking for a new book boyfriend, allow me to introduce you to Clay Mathers... In her novel, Hearts in Harmony, author Gemma Brocato has Pippa Sanders and Clay Mathers first meeting under not so auspicious circumstances when Pippa is accosted by a member of one of those disgusting radical groups who make it their life's work to protest at the funerals of soldiers killed in action.  As the widow of a soldier, Pippa is paying a visit to her husband's grave after attending services for a friend.  Clay is also visiting a grave nearby and is quick to come to Pippa's rescue.  Since the death of her husband, Pippa is used to taking care of herself and her children without the help of a man and rather than being grateful to this stranger who sends the nasty protester packing, Pippa is determined to show Clay she is quite capable of defending herself and show him she does. . .however, her fancy maneuvers backfire and the carefully constructed walls she has built around herself begin to crumble. Pippa has a full life working with clients as a music therapist, raising her children and providing support to military widows like herself. Her chance meeting with Clay Mathers, who works for one of those government acronym agencies and is in town temporarily, has her dreaming dreams of this green-eyed hunk.  And the attraction is definitely mutual. How much more attractive could Clay be??  He's beautiful to look at, he loves children, and he's good to his mother.  I think readers will find Hearts in Harmony a pleasure to read.  I know I certainly did!  It's the second book in a series and although I found some of the back story on the other characters to be missing, it was likely clarified in the first book and did not seriously detract from this book.  Actually, it made me want to read the first book Cooking Up Love.  Hearts in Harmony is very well-written with engaging characters and a story that is touching, funny, steamy and will bring you to the edge of your seat before it concludes just the way it should.

Not having read the previous book in this series, or any of Ms. Brocato's previous books, I didn't know what to expect. What I got after the final page was turned was an emotional journey where two lost souls finally start living their lives amidst the political backdrop of war. While the story was immensely satisfying on a personal level, it was a bit overwrought when it came to the discussions of war and homegrown terrorists. Pippa's life has revolved around her children and her music therapy work since the day her husband died in war. She still visits his grave regularly and surrounds herself with other families dealing with the same kind of grief. The day she meets Clay is the day her life begins once again as she and he set out on a rocky yet sensual road to romance. Pippa is a likable heroine, strong-willed, and more than capable on taking care of herself. She's drawn to Clay as he challenges her and their interactions both in and out of the bedroom are combustible. Clay is a man of few words but when he does talk it's cloaked in gruffness. He's a sexy man who exudes power but is very rough around the edges. He speaks his mind which leads to some jaw-dropping moments that put a smile on my face though. He's drawn to Pippa the moment he sees her but doesn't want anything long-term. He and Pippa therefore start off as friends but soon evolve into more in an entertaining dance full of push and pull. Through it all Clay's emotional walls slowly crumble as Pippa and her kids give him a glimpse of what he's always wanted but didn't think he'd ever get. Theirs is a rocky yet immensely satisfying journey to HEA and it's mostly due to the endearing Clay. This was a sweet yet sexy story with likable main characters and a colorful and heartwarming collection of Granite Pointe denizens, particularly Clay's mother, that added to the feeling of family this close-knit group of people portray. The romance was entertaining and full of sexual tension and when the story focused on them I found myself fully immersed in the story. But when the storyline veered off into the political arena in became over-the-top with its villains and felt like a distraction. Dewey was stereotypical in his villainy and I dreaded seeing him. For the most part though this was a delightful story with a great romance that can be read on its own. With the talent shown here, and by the smile on my face, this won't be the last book I read by Ms. Brocato.

Hearts In Harmony (Five Senses #2) by Gemma Brocato 4 out of 5 Stars Pipsqueak, Spitfire, Pippa, Pip...I absolutely loved Phillipa Sanders as the heroine in this story!  She is a strong, loving, hardworking mother of two twin six year olds who has remained in love with her deceased soldier for 6 long years.  That is until she finds herself involved with the sexy, sarcastic, cussing, but totally chivalrous and romantic Clay Mathers who challenges her career choice, her ability to withstand his physical pull, and her desire to remain alone any longer. After his mother's stroke, Clay commits to helping with the family’s Christmas tree farm and stay on until she's able to take care of herself again but he has every intention of going back to Virginia to his house boat and his bachelor lifestyle as soon as he finishes his commitment and his possible affair with the beauty he met while guarding a soldiers funeral.  Although it's his greatest honor, he hasn't shared his work with the Government or much of himself with anyone in town.  So when Pippa stays after the funeral to "talk with her husband" she's not aware that a particularly destructive, self-serving group has been protesting Service Member's funerals and working their way up the FBI list and that their local leader has stayed around to get to know her better.  However, Clay was enamored of the beauty and her voice and can't let her be hurt by an old Army acquaintance.  The first time they touched wasn't all sparks like you normally hear about, but it was definitely worth the connection and made Clay exceptionally eager for another opportunity to get his hands on this amazing woman. As for Pippa, she finds Clay to be the only man who has made her question her future as a single mother, and that's just from the first meeting.  What will become of her and her twins if Clay leaves town after she helps his mother recuperate from her stroke but she knows she can't keep him at arm’s length when he starts showing his true interest in her kids.  Seeing them smile makes his sex appeal increase beyond anything she can imagine, so when the chance to keep the affair a secret comes up she can't risk letting the opportunity go.  However, having Clay in her life also brings the government work closer to her home and her kids.   This was a well-paced, sassy, romantic read with a little suspense and some steam thrown in for fun!  I truly enjoyed the character development and greatly appreciated Brocato's straightforward characters who didn't go for the melodramatic, indecisive approach to life; They made choices, lived with responsibility and integrity, and held their heads high rather than hid behind secrets and passive aggressive drama.  It was refreshing!  I highly recommend this book and have every intention of reading the rest of this series!  I can't wait to hear about Sam and I'd love to hear more about Noah!! *A complimentary copy was given in exchange for an honest review* Pepper, My Secret Book Spot

Since her husband’s death, Pippa has raised her two six year old children on her own. Then during a chance meeting, Clay Mathers steps into her life. He’s a rough-edged hero with an attitude, but Pippa’s a strong-willed woman who’s more than prepared to tangle with him. Their relationship is hot from the beginning, and sparks fly when their fling develops. For me this story brought to life both the heartbreak of a woman who’d lost her husband to the war, and also the strength she had to find to move on and be the mother her children needed. This is the second book in a series, and the first book is now on my kindle and ready to read. If you enjoy contemporary romance with a touch of suspense, then this story is for you.

This story features the sister, Pippa, of the hero in book one (no, you don't have to have read the first book before reading this one). This book doesn't quite have the same small home town feeling of the first book—not a bad thing, just different. Instead it has a military subplot. The story includes small parts for Jack, Gem and Sam from book one. We also get to see a bit more of Butch, their dad. When the hero and heroine meet, there are fireworks...just not the good kind. He thinks she's a sexy spitfire he'd like to get to know. She thinks he's "obnoxious, overbearing...sexy..." She alternates between being "intensely angry and ridiculously turned-on." Everything that comes out of his mouth is the wrong thing. LOL! I love it when the H/h start off this way. It was special watching the hero fall head over heels in love with the heroine and her quirky twins. I adored Clay, the hero, with his tough exterior and marshmallow center. He is such a romantic but would deny it. I fell in love with the heroine's twins, who were also introduced in book one. Such sweet little terrors. They are adorable. I also renewed my crush from the first book—brother Sam. Not a lot of surprises here, just a good ole fashioned romance with an idiot bad guy to gum up the works. It was fast paced and a quick read. I read it in two sittings. I am very much looking forward to reading book three. I'm starting to believe Gemma Brocato is going to live on my "must read" list. I still want to move to this small town of Granite Pointe. :)

This is the second book in the Series and I enjoyed it as much as the first. This book is easy to read, flows well with lots of Romance, humor real life situations and in this one suspense and thrills. Gemma makes her characters real .She did a great job describing the military funeral confrontations that happen. She was sensitive to both sides and the families. It is not necessary to read her first novel to keep up with the second but she has woven them together very well. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. I think I'm falling in love with the Kerrigan family and I can't wait to dive into the next book.
