The Heart's Journey Home is an incredible adventure that takes you down a sad road with Kate Sterling. She still hasn't recovered from the loss of her husband three years earlier, and raising her young daughter on her own isn't easy. Moving back to her home town, she prays she can find peace - both with God and with herself. She isn't prepared for how much the town has changed or that the Lord would teach her how to open her heart to love again. This story had an interesting twist almost from the get-go. I felt Nathan's pain as he watched Kate drive off, fully believing that she took his heart with her. And Kate, completely unaware of his affections. The little adventure with the flat tire threw another curveball into the scene as an old schoolmate she grew up with, Adam, came to her aid. While there wasn't any fast-paced, edge of your seat action, this story still drew me in. It was hard to put down! Kate's story, of her struggle with letting Ryan go and seeking the Lord, was described so realistically that you couldn't help loving Kate. Then her struggles over her attractions to an unbeliever - so realistic! I really appreciated that Jen brought this up in Kate's story. So many stories out there they fall in love and then the one they love suddenly comes to Christ and they marry - with hardly a mention of the character falling in love with an nonbeliever in the first place. In The Heart's Journey Home Kate faces this and even resigns herself to the fact that she cannot have a future with a certain character because he isn't a Christian. There were a few kisses within the pages of this book. I felt that the kisses were rushed for the characters, but maybe that's just me. This book deals a lot with single parents raising kids, which was something I'd never really read about before. If you haven't read The Hearts Journey Home yet, I highly encourage you to. Jen Stephens is a wonderful author and I enjoyed her story and the voice she used to tell it so much. I am looking forward to the release of her next book at the end of the year. :-)

Originally posted at: www.longandshortreviews.blogspot.com ***** When her faith falters, hope hides, and love seems forever gone after the death of her husband, Kate Sterling takes seven-year-old daughter Maddie and returns to her roots in Harvest Bay, Ohio. Kate is a "doer", but all the working and helping others has not helped her move on with her life even after three years. Ryan's brother Nathan has been there for Kate and Maddie, giving comfort and security, but he looks so much like Ryan he is a constant reminder of their loss. However, a special bond holds them close to each other. Still, Kate's faith in God's plan for her life falters. Back in Harvest Bay her support system is huge with unconditional love from family and friends and her receptiveness to the gentle nudging of the Holy Spirit, help her begin her journey toward a newness of life. The spiritual emptiness begins to recede. The reader is privileged to vicariously experience her journey as author Jen Stephens creates a story so true to life it seems more like fact than fiction. Words from one of the minor characters set the foundation for the story. She says, to be sure you recognize the difference in God's plan and your plan for your life. Adam Sullivan, a single father and the varsity coach for Harvest Bay high school, has had so many of his dreams shattered he is not sure of God's plan or if there really is a plan for him. His journey to an understanding of salvation and its rewards reveals many facets of his, Kate's, and Kate's grandfather's personalities. The Bible scriptures, the way they are presented, and the spiritual growth that follows is compelling. Dr. Nathan Sterling's journey has twists and turns that create a love that seeps in ever so subtly-a love that brings joy and a sense of direction to him and those he loves. The many secondary characters, all on their own unique journeys, blend with the major characters' journeys. Also, the nurturing of children and caring for the aged binds the generations together wonderfully. Jen Stephen's smooth, inviting style of writing enhances this gentle story about gentle, caring people. The Heart's Journey Home celebrates revitalizing faith, coaxing hope out of hiding, and giving love wings to soar. Her ability to weave in scriptures at just the right places adds to the rich texture of the story. This one is a KEEPER.

"The Heart's Journey Home" is Jen's debut novel, and hopefully not her last!! It is a novel showing God's grace and how He works in the lives of the faithful. If we are patient and wait on the Lord's timing, He will renew our strength and give us the desires of our heart. Kate's great-grandpa reminds me of my granddaddy! So wise and loving! A strong man of God, he lovingly guides Kate to rediscover her faith. She struggles, as do a lot of us, with why a loving God would take her husband and her little girls daddy. I really love how Jen developed her characters. I felt like I knew each one of them! She tells the story in such a way that I could imagine myself there in Harvest Bay, Ohio! This is a wonderful Christian romance that I hope everyone will take the time to read. You won't be sorry!

There was so much I loved about this book I'm not sure where to begin. It's a beautifully told story about second chances. Jen Stephens creates relatable characters with real life struggles. The story had so many levels too; healing from loss, returning to your roots, finding love again -- but the heart of the story was in rediscovering Faith. Along with being such a great story, The Heart's Journey Home has tremendous cultural relevance. There's something for everyone, but as a thirty-something y/o woman, I understood the characters' phase in life, balancing kids and career. While I recommend this book for everyone, I think single parents would find it exceptionally interesting -- not just for its entertainment value, but for the hopeful message and it's realistic portrayal of life as a single Christian parent. And I wouldn't do the book justice if I didn't mention that it's beautifully romantic as well.

This is an amazing book. I couldn't put it down. I decided to read it every night just before bed. I had a problem staying up until 3 or 4 a.m., I just couldn't put it down. I finally had to put a stopping point on it and I wouldn't go past that. I finished the book in 5 nights. The book is very readable! I do not like to read unless the first 2 chapters intrique me.... This one kept me intriqued from begining to end.... I can't wait to read the next one.
