Pretty lame hero.......... Buck the 28 year old  hero (?) is traveling with 17 year old Lyse after she saved his life.  A good deed she took a severe beating for by the way.  Instead of being grateful he is trying to figure a way to get her in bed.  He finally figures it out.  He takes her to dinner.  Gives her her first  glass of wine.  Keeps refilling her wine glass and when she is drunk enough takes her back to the hotel bedroom and  makes love to her.    So basically he got her drunk and took advantage of her.  It's a good thing it's 1849 because in this day and age there are laws on the books. I'm over halfway through the book and so far no words of caring.  Oh he's bedding her and telling her she's pretty-- but no I care,  I love you, or I'll marry you.  He does tell her he'll harm any man who says anything nasty about her.  Well they are saying nasty thinks about her it's 1849 and  there are only two kinds of women.  She is a 17 year old girl not a sophisticated widow so it bothers her what people say but she  doesn't feel secure enough to think she deserves better.   I'm sure in the end the writer will tie up this story with a neat bow.  Lyse will get get her happily ever after.  Unfortunately it will be with an arrogant jerk  who doesn't deserve her.  Doesn't make me want to speed read to the end pf the story.

Very well written.  Very few typos.  Well thought out story taking place in 1849.  With 1849 values, males were male chauvinist pigs and women had very little options.   If you try to find the men with more openness with their feelings then it wouldn't be set in 1849.  If you want the men to be more open then you need to read the modern romances. Wish it had gone a little longer.  I will read this author again.

Great historical romance that kept my interest throughout. Great character studies and interesting historical facts. I recommend this book for readers over age 18. I will be reading more from this author.
