Overview

Heartstone by John Schreiber

Legend said that heartstone could cure any illness, but Thrylain the Great, the founder of Elinala, understood its real power and destroyed all heartstones.
Or so he said.
Seven hundred years passed and people forgot, When a crippled prince was born in Elinala, the king ordered his son's death. Many died trying to protect the child, and in the ensuing chaos the boy disappeared-along with a pendant from the royal treasury. Everyone believed that the child was dead and the pendant destroyed.
But they were wrong.
Now grown to manhood, Derrick's only clue to his past is his gold pendant with a long-forgotten heartstone. When Derrick tries to learn his true identity, the kingdom of Elinala is forever changed as hidden crimes are exposed, ancient evils set free, and the full power of heartstone is finally unleashed.

Without a doubt, this is the most entertaining, engrossing, and well-written fantasy in years--probably the best since Tolkien. You'll agree--even if you don't like fantasy. Great for book clubs and individuals who like great books.

In a tangled web of magic, this classic epic of good v.s. evil is a must read for any fan of fantasy! Any other author would be hard put to write a story line so captivating. This book could drag you right through that rainy day because once you start you can't put it down. Enjoyable for young readers and adults alike!

I've read this fantasy now several times and each time I see more I that I missed on the previous reading. This is a tremendously structured novel with many layers--yet it is fast-moving, constantly entertaining, and suspenseful. Highly recommended.

I was skeptical that Schreiber who was known for writing realistic fiction could make a fantasy novel work--I'm glad to say this is a small-press masterpiece. He packs in the action and characters of some of those massive trilogies in one book! He does this by cutting out all that extraneous pulp-fiction verbiage so common in fantasy fiction--with one sentence he nails characters and/or settings by planting an amazing image in your mind. The best thing I can compare it to is if the writers of the Bourne movies had written Tolkien--fast-moving scenes that develop a tightly-woven, complex plot. We get a complete story with fantastic characters--all in one book.

Though, I've only read a preview for this book, I was so engrossed with it that I wanted more. I was bummed out to see that it had not made it to B&N shelves yet. But, I won't have to wait long. Schreiber has outdone himself with this fantasy novel. I recommend it for those who enjoy fantasy adventures like Eragon. *two thumbs up*

well i am Marcus and this book is very amusing. i am one of mr. Schriebers students and he recommended this book to me and im glad he did.  the detail he puts in this book is exceptional and the setting of the story is awesome! I also like how he wrote it out like a play where its  jumping scene to scene and you can still actually tell whats going on. And with this story, you can not and I repeat CAN NOT guess whats going to  going to happen next, he has got me stumped and all parts, I have not read all of the story yet but i plan on it, I cant even put the book down
