Heat it Up: Off the Ice - Book One by Stina Lindenblatt

A steamy hockey romance from Pushing the Limits author Stina Lindenblatt

“These two characters’ storylines wove together flawlessly and made for one hot read that had me wanting to pack my bags for my own Finland adventure.”—Cindi Madsen, USA TODAY bestselling author of Anatomy of a Player

Some games are hotter off the ice…

Sofia Phillips feels cursed. Her father cheated on her mother, her boyfriend cheated on her—she’s done with dating. A summer work-exchange program in Finland is the perfect escape. But instead of gaining experience as an athletic trainer, she’s cleaning toilets. Awesome. The trip is a disaster, and even better, she meets Kyle Bennett. In the sauna. Naked.

Sexy hockey player Kyle was the star right wing for an NHL team. But after an accident killed his wife and left him injured, Kyle has appreciated the “therapeutic” benefits of booze and puck bunnies. Now in Finland for the summer, he’s coaching in an elite hockey-training camp for teens. When Sofia's grandmother decides to set her up with a nice Finnish man, Sofia recruits Kyle as her make-believe boyfriend. Neither expects their first kiss to sizzle. And neither expects, while stranded on an island during a storm, to have a scorching night of passion.

But as their charade, and then their attraction, develops into something deeper, the past comes back, threatening to destroy them. They must decide if their feelings for each other are strong enough to survive—or it will be game over.

4 1/2 stars. This was a great sweet, enjoyable second chance/sport romance that has heartbreak, drama, passion and love. This was well written and I loved that this story was from both their point of views. They were great lovable characters, that were well developed. This story captured my attention and held it to the end. Both of them have been very hurt, and they have come to Finland to getaway from their memories. The way in which Sophia and Kyle meets is entertaining, it was witty, and had wonderful banter with first sight attraction. I adored Kyle with his nerdy glasses, hot body, physics facts, protectiveness, as well as his sense of humor. Sophia is such a serious girl, who has some serious trust issues, she loves photography, as well as her studies in Athletic training but is struggling with her haunting memories of betrayal. Sophia and Kyle have great chemistry and I adored watching their relationship evolve from friends to more. Loved the rich and loving descriptive, that is used to show us what they both see in one another, as well as the passion they have for one another as they let down their walls. I did not like all the interference by Joni as he tries to come between them. I did not feel any chemistry between him and Sophia at all. Will Sophia and Kyles' secrets tear them apart? Or will they both let love in again? You will have to read to find out. Great second chance romance that is adorable and heartwarming as well as sexy. Highly recommended! HEAT IT UP is the first installment in Stina Lindenblatt’s new adult, contemporary OFF THE ICE romance series. This is former NHL player Kyle Bennett, and American exchange student Sofia Phillips’s story line. Told from dual first person perspectives (Kyle and Sofia) HEAT IT UP follows the building relationship between Kyle and Sofia. Following a devastating accident that destroyed his hockey career, Kyle finds himself in Finland coaching young teens in a summer hockey program. Sofia, on the other hand, runs at the first sign of trouble and heads overseas to escape the mess that has become her life. Hoping to gain summer work experience in her mother’s home country of Finland as an athletic trainer, Sofia finds herself cleaning toilets and showers at the local arena. An accidental meeting with a naked Kyle Bennett, finds our heroine caught between lust, or looking at Kyle as a temporary arrangement. When a friends with benefits relationship turns into something more, Sofia knows that only heartache will come when one or both have to return to the USA. HEAT IT UP is a new adult story line but the premise and many of the scenarios are nearing young adult (YA) territory including a love triangle wherein our heroine is playing both sides. Although Sofia professes to want only Kyle Bennett, she continues to accept invitations and a weekend away with a young man with whom her grandmother is trying to match up. Conflicting emotions and intentions are always fuel for misunderstanding and broken hearts. For those of you who follow my reviews, I am NOT a fan of the love triangle scenario especially one where promises have been made but actions say something else. The relationship between Sofia and Kyle is one of immediate attraction but Sofia isn’t willing to risk more betrayal and refuses to accept Kyle into her life. Kyle, is a man, trying to escape the heartache of his past, and hopes for something more with Sofia Phillips. The $ex scenes are intimate without the use of graphic sexual language or imagery. There are a number of secondary and supporting players including Kyle’s friend and fellow hockey player Nik. We are also introduced to a couple of Sofia’s girlfriends (Maija and Claire), and of course, the young man Joni who is desperately trying to get between Sofia and Kyle. HEAT IT UP is a story of young love; a romance that may be threatened by secrets and lies; a relationship that struggles with insecurity and the threat of another potential suitor. There is a twist to the story line that reveals a close connection between our leading couple including a mutual home base of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The writing style is a bit sluggish at times as though we are being told a story and not invited into the action. I had a difficult time connecting with the characters or feeling any empathy for what was and what is going to be. Sofia’s lack of direction, and her inability to ‘just say no’ to her second suitor, lacked the maturity I want from my story book characters.

Heat It Up is a quick, easy and enjoyable read. It follows the story of Kyle and Sofia. Sofia has had the worst luck; not only in men, but in life. Looking for a change of scenery, Sofia jumps at the chance for a work-exchange program in Finland. However, instead of getting job experience like she was anticipating, she ends up having to scrub toilets….Kyle is sexy and on top of his game. That is until an accident killed his wife and left him injured. Now, he’s back in Finland for the summer to teach hockey camp to teens. What he didn’t plan on was Sofia…And when he ends up helping her out by being her fake boyfriend, sparks fly and all bets are off. Will Sofia and Kyle give into their building and undeniable attraction or will the past come back and destroy everything they worked so hard for??? Overall, I really enjoyed Heat It Up. I really enjoyed the story-line and loved learning about Finland. I really liked Sofia and Kyle. I thought they had great chemistry and loved their push and pull. Both of them were dealing with some pretty tough issues. I loved watching their friendship bloom and seeing if it would turn into something more. Heat It Up was a quick read for me. I was able to finish it in one sitting. I think it had just the right amount of drama, romance and steam. I think this series is off to a really good start and I look forward to seeing where it will go next.

4 1/2 of 5 Stars Stina Lindenblatt scores with Heat It Up the first book in the Off the Ice Series. Sofia Phillips decides to visit her grandmother and accept a summer work-exchange program in Finland after her boyfriend cheats on her. She wants nothing to do with dating. Her grandmother continually tries to set her up with her friend’s grandson. Sophia meets, former NHL star, Kyle Bennett, who pretends to be her boyfriend in hoped that her grandmother will back off on the matchmaking. This contemporary sports romance is suitable for new adult audiences. Stina Lindenblatt does a great job with her character development and plot. I could empathize with Sophia and her communication issues with her grandmother. My grandparents lived in Hungary, so I experienced similar communication and ethnic differences that she did. The scenario seemed extremely believable. I felt bad for Sophia that her work exchange wasn’t what she was expecting’ at least some positive things happened for her in the story. I liked Kyle’s character. My heart went out to him for everything he went through. He is a good guy and coach. I loved his physics scenarios. My son plays hockey. Anytime he had to do a science project it relates to hockey, so I appreciate Kyle’s physic conversations, even though his friend Nik says, “it’s boring.” I enjoyed the chemistry of the characters. They both showed growth throughout the story. The plot had some interesting twists. The novel held me captivated from begin to end. I look forward to reading the next book in the Off The Ice Series.
