Hell Fer Sartin and Other Stories
Hell Fer Sartin is, as the author notes, a series of 10 short, similar monologues. They were originally published in various periodicals, and Hell Fer Sartain was also included in "A Cumberland Vendetta, and Other Stories."

Hell Fer Sartin, or sometimes Hell for Certain, is a few miles north of Hyden along the Middle Fork of the Kentucky River. As the crow flies, which is not how you can get there, it is about four miles from Dogwood Valley Groceries, and almost due west of Hazard. The most common story for how it got its name involves a missionary who took a trip to the area long ago. When asked where he'd been he said something to the effect of, "I don't know, but it was Hell for certain!" Hell fer Sartain is alongside Kingdom-Come, and, with feuds and the excitement incident to the moonshining industry, the inhabitants seem to have pretty lively time of it. Mr Fox tells his stories with humor and leaves the reader with the that Hell fer Sartain is a good place to stay away from.

About the Author

John Fox, Jr., (December 16, 1862 – July 8, 1919) was an American journalist, novelist, and short story writer. Fox was one of Virginia’s best-selling writers in the first decade of the twentieth century. Though he occasionally wrote for periodicals, after 1904, Fox dedicated much of his attention to fiction. The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come (published in 1903) and The Trail of the Lonesome Pine (published in 1908) are arguably his most well known and successful works, entering the New York Times top ten list of bestselling novels for 1903, 1904, 1908, and 1909 respectively. In The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, the character Devil Judd Tolliver was based on the real life of "Devil John" Wesley Wright, the sheriff of Wise County, Virginia. Many of his works reflected the naturalist style, his childhood in Kentucky's southern Appalachia, and his life among the coal miners of Big Stone Gap, Virginia. Many of his novels were historical romances or period dramas set in that region.
