Overview
Hello Dolly isn’t purely a vehicle for Carol Channing, but this superb performer nonetheless steals the show. Channing has plenty of assistance from a brilliant cast that includes Charles Nelson Reilly and Eileen Brennan, but her star turn as matchmaker Dolly is what one remembers. Channing’s inimitable renditions of composer Jerry Herman’s “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Put On Your Sunday Clothes,” and “So Long Dearie” are up their with the most indelible of Broadway moments. The mirth and wit that won Channing a 1964 Tony Award is channeled through this fundamental cast recording.
