Overview

Dr Emily Lovegrove, an expert on the psychology of bullying, has written this book to help both the children who are being bullied, and their parents. It is based on her research and work with many hundreds of young people and their families. Whilst there are books aimed at teachers on this topic, this is the first book on the subject written especially for the parents of bullied children. It features a new approach to bullies and bullying that has been enormously successful largely due to the fact that it was developed in collaboration with teenagers. Written with alternate chapters for adults and children, the book provides a valuable self-help guide for families to understand the reasons why their children are being subjected to bullying - and the resources to help them stop it. A unique set of symbols represent each strategy and are printed on a 'cut out and keep' card.

Help! My child is being bullied and I’m desperate…

You’ve seen the headlines (“Distraught parents of suicide victim blame school for not addressing bullying problem”), you’ve felt the fear. And you are now stuck in that place where your child assures you that if you get out there and do something they risk further bullying and if you do nothing… they still risk further bullying. Being bullied at school is HORRIBLE. And being the parent of a child who is being bullied is also horrible. And while we’re on the subject, being a teacher or other professional working with children who are being bullied is not much fun either. Most adults want to help. Very few know how.

Remember this feeling of hopelessness and helplessness…

Why? Because by the end of this book it’s going to be a distant memory, your child will have TEN, proven, successful ways of dealing with bullying! Also you will have proven, successful strategies that will help YOU change the way you deal with aggression in your life. Because you are your child’s role model they will copy you.

Excuse me but who exactly are you?

I’m married to a schoolteacher and Mum to three adult kids. I’m grandmother to four gorgeous grandchildren and over the years I’ve had various cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hens… Er… you don’t mean that sort of information, do you? You mean what are my qualifications for offering you advice on coping with bullying! Right! I’m a psychologist. Psychologists use the knowledge we currently have – based on scientific evidence about how people’s brains work and how people generally behave – to achieve the most helpful outcome to people’s problems.

And me? For many years I researched the topic of children, appearance and bullying, and lectured in a university. But now I spend my time as a consultant, helping schools all over the UK and hospitals (such as Great Ormond Street UK, and Seattle Children’s USA) put the research I did to practical use.

Why are there two parts to this book?

This book is designed so that it’s helpful to parents and to kids. Each topic is dealt with first in an adults’ chapter, then in a kids’ chapter

The adult chapters give you the technical stuff (why each strategy is important) and it gives you the chance to do the exercises that the kids need to do for yourself. The alternate chapters are then aimed at your child (or your school classes if you’re a teacher). If you have younger children you can work through these chapters together. Older kids may well be able – or prefer – to work by themselves. The point is you will understand what they’re trying to achieve – and why. They will know that you understand the techniques they are learning and that you’re there to help them.

And that is what this book is really about – showing you how to work together to overcome bullying.
