About the Author

Barbara is an award-winning novelist and second-generation journalist. After spending a decade in maternity clothes, she has five boys to show for it and much fodder for her column, The Plate Spinner Chronicles, a long-running feature in the Chicago Tribune. A member of RWA's Windy City chapter, she still dreams of the day when her to-do list includes "Send NY Times book critic thank you note" and "Accept Godiva's request to be a taste-tester."

Reviewed by Gretchen Jawurek for Readers' Favorite Help Wanted by Barbara Valentin presents Claire Mendez and her husband Paul, a couple experiencing what most career couples experience; downsizing, losing your job at the most inopportune time, while at the same time family obligations are revving up, and then of course maintaining a relationship that can stand up against the trials and tribulations of a bad economy. They struggle with not only paying the monthly bills, but also wanting to do something fulfilling. They are tired of doing a job because they have to and want to do something that is enjoyable and get paid for it. Claire, Paul and their four boys, the Mendez family, is one representation of the American family, how they find fulfillment, and how they grow in their relationships with each other, and how trials can make you stronger as a person and in your relationships. Help Wanted is delightful. Fun and laughter, laughter through tears, Help Wanted shows us that even the most trivial day to day machinations can hold a magic that can work wonders in fixing a sticky situation. The Mendez family find themselves in crazy situations, sometimes of their own making, that make you laugh and exclaim out loud and think to yourself, “I have seen this before,” or even “I have been here before.” You become so involved in the story that you continue reading, wondering how they will resolve their situations as if you are reading about someone in your own family.

I loved everything about "Help Wanted." The word “authentic” keeps coming to mind – the characters, the dialog, the setting. Barbara Valentin knows how to develop her characters and storylines. Anybody who knows Chicago can identify with many of the scenes in this book, and this made the story so much more realistic to me! I could not put down this book! I can’t add anything to the excellent story summarizations provided by other reviewers, but I can say that "Help Wanted" is a true-to-life, light-hearted, enjoyable story that should not be missed!

AWESOME story!!!!! Claire and Paul sure did struggle but in the end they pulled through! Sometimes it's the little reminders to give you that push to realize how much you do still LOVE each other! I enjoyed the plate spinner stories and how true to real life they really were.Amazing story a must read, cant wait for the next one!

Claire hates her job.  She is a manager in a technical writing job, and she hates every minute she is there.  She wanted to be a NY Times bestselling writer. She has been the bread-winner since her husband, Paul, lost his job.  He is a stay-at-home Dad to their four boys.   Claire resents Paul's refusal to get a new job.  They each have their secrets and are not communicating well. Barbara Valentin writes with delightful humor, caring and real dilemmas in family life.  I found this to be a fast read because I simply did not want to put it down.  I cannot wait for the next book in the Assignment series!

We all know relationships have their ups and downs— especially when the stresses of kids and work add their whammy! As I read "Help Wanted," I was pulling for both lead character Claire and her husband Paul to TALK! A cute, heart-warming and engaging story I tore through. Pick this one up today!
