Dr. Jerome Rosner provides an incredibly useful teaching guide for those of us teachers who work with special needs students. It is designed for immediate implementation: the activities require little or no extra materials, the auditory exercises are the most practical I have ever seen, he gives an overview of the kind of teacher one has to be to work with these students, and he provides all of the word lists necessary to increase the reading levels of students. His assertion is that with learning disabled students, we must re-think how we teach reading. While most reading programs depend on a phoneme-by-phoneme learning approach which is very difficult for students with reading difficulties, Dr. Rosner proceeds from the assertion that special needs students often need to learn sound UNITS, not individual phoneme/grapheme relationships, to be successful. For my students, the approach has been fail-safe. My most frustrated readers have experienced success with this approach. Best of all, it's presented in a cookbook recipe style, with step-by-step instructions in implementing the approach. In my 26 years of teaching special education students, I have never encountered a book more suitable for immediate implementation in the classroom than this one. It is a must read, especially for special needs teachers who are new to the field or for any teacher who wants to see immediate successes with their students who are struggling with reading.
