Children's Literature
Numerous black and white photographs, large print text, and short chapters make this book both informative and easy to read. Young readers will learn how Henry Ford, at the tender age of twelve, became devoted to developing a "machine that would travel the roads." Today, Ford is most famous for inventing the Model T, a car that the everyday person could afford. In the process of developing a system for producing this strong, practical, and economical car, he revolutionized the way businesses work and Americans live. Complex concepts such as "manufacturing" and "mass production" are explained in terms that are simple and easy to understand. Additionally, there is a glossary, index, timeline, and list of sources for further information. This book is a must for any elementary school teacher's unit on inventions, and it is also an ideal choice when introducing younger children to research. It is part of the "Our People" series. 2003, The Child's World,

Gr 2-4-Three attractive books that share a lively format that could entice young report writers. Each simple biography is illustrated with excellent-quality archival photos, art, documents, and diagrams. There's a facsimile of the first telegraph message ever sent, a blueprint of one of the Wright brothers' early biplanes, and a photograph of Ford's first engine, which powers a light bulb (an explanatory caption would have been illuminating here). Interspersed in the linear texts are "Interesting Facts," e.g., "The one-millionth Ford car was produced on December 10, 1915." The authors also explore some of the social, cultural, political, and historical dimensions of these inventors' innovations. Useful additions for students beginning to investigate these men.-Dona Ratterree, New York City Public Schools Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
