**ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review** Her Claim is the first book I've read by Rebecca Grace Allen but it certainly won't be my last. I absolutely LOVED both Cassie and Patrick. It was great to read a story where the characters were older and had actually had careers. I typically read a couple of romance novels a week and most feature the typical 30 somthing's or worse yet an early 20's female and an early 30's male. It quickly gets boring reading the same thing over and over. This was definitely a refreshing change.

This book ticked all the boxes for me. I loved both main characters, two mature adults, neither of whom was afraid of who they were or what they wanted. Cassie and Patrick have a love/hate relationship that evolves into so much more. And I loved that both characters were able to be open and honest with one another. It was a multi-layered story about two people who truly connect physically and emotionally. This was my first book by Rebecca Grace Allen, but it will definitely not be my last. She’s on my Must Read list from here on out.

I found myself reacting very differently to Her Claim than I typically do to books like it, and I’m not certain if that’s because I connected to the characters too much, or not enough. Like Cassie, I’m biracial and (somewhat) bicultural. Unlike her, however, I never really struggled with my cultural identity, probably because I was mostly raised white. So I was left in an odd place of closely identifying with the character, but not. It’s not something I’ve faced before, and made me uncertain how to proceed with my review. What I can say is that I enjoyed Her Claim. I expect that once I’ve discharged my current writing and reviewing obligations, I’ll be picking up up His Contract. I also eagerly anticipate Samantha and Brady’s story. I’m just assuming, at this point, that it’s book 3. I don’t know if it was intentional, but I got strong Pride and Prejudice vibes while reading Her Claim. From the two main characters hating each other then slowly falling in love, to Cassie finding she’s completely misjudged Patrick, to the love letter Patrick sends her, and a few other spoiler-ish things I won’t mention, I was strongly reminded of Pride & Prejudice throughout the second half of the book. I don’t think that’s a bad thing, it was simply unexpected given the subject matter. One final point I’d like to make. Like many BDSM stories/books I’ve read, Her Claim features a strong woman trying to make peace with submissive tendencies. I’m usually annoyed by that struggle because it feels as though authors stick it in just to add conflict to the story. I think Her Claim offers a better justification for Cassie’s feelings than many books offer. I could accept the struggle Cassie was facing in reconciling her own desires with her reasons to be disgusted by them. All said, I think my only “negative”, if you could even call it that, is that I would have liked to see more chapters from Patrick’s point of view. Overall, Her Claim was a great book. I’m giving it four stars more because of my own struggles mentioned earlier than any fault on the author’s part. If you’re into BDSM related stories, this is a good one to check out. TLDR: Great Book. Strong Pride and Prejudice vibes (not a bad thing). Good explanations of Cassie's feelings. If you like BDSM books, read this.

I really enjoyed this story! Quite honestly I was not a fan of Patrick at the start, as his actions were definitely in jerk territory but he really grew on me and redeemed himself quite quickly. He's been forced into taking a position in his deceased father's company in order to support his mother or lose his inheritance so he's reluctantly running the global sales department of his father's publishing house. Patrick likes sex but lately his encounters with women have been unsatisfying – quick trysts for mutual pleasure but with no desire for second nights. With Cassie, things are instantly different. Their first time together is explosive and he wants more. The kink in this story may not be for everyone. There is some breath play and consensual non-consent scenes, things Cassie is interested in but wouldn't trust with another partner. Patrick makes her feel safe. I like the way the author has Patrick remind Cassie of her safe word, pays attention to her responsiveness in a scene and provides immediate aftercare. You can see that Patrick really cares about Cassie and that that he enjoys their play together because she enjoys it too. She gives him the freedom to express his own sexual desires and while Cassie and Patrick don't have a Dom/sub relationship, she enjoys being dominated in a scene and he loves being the one to 'tame' her. But outside of play scenes they have a very equal relationship. As their friendship develops, Cassie and Patrick confide in each other about many things in their lives, including their relationships with family. Patrick and his mother have a strained relationship, the opposite of Cassie's affectionate and sometimes opinionated family. They are both wary of commitment and getting overly involved, which goes by the wayside as they start to really care for each other. They help each other make decisions about their careers and professional plans for the future even as they have trouble figuring out how to align their own personal future plans into one that will work for them together. Fortunately they figure things out for a very satisfying ending. With complex characters and an engaging story, this steamy romance is a must read for BDSM romance lovers!
