Here for the Party

Gretchen Wilson opens her debut album asserting, "I'm an eight ball shooting double fisted/drinking son of a gun," on the title track, and follows it up with the boisterous hit single "Redneck Woman," which begins, "I ain't never been the Barbie doll type." The music behind her is razor-edged and rowdy southern rock beholden to Skynyrd, the Charlie Daniels Band, and Hank Jr. Singing with a bluesy edge that recalls both Tanya Tucker and Natalie Maines, Wilson is a dynamic presence on disc. But while this gal may enjoy partying with her friends, there's depth in her soul. In the lovely country ballad "When I Think About Cheatin'," defined by its weeping pedal steel, she reconsiders infidelity when she realizes it would cost her the man she loves; as cheatin' songs go, this is progress. "Holdin' You," a provocative ballad in Dixie Chicks country-rock style, finds her emoting full throttle à la Ms. Maines in expressing devotion to the man who keeps her grounded. "What Happened," an acoustic-based reflection on a breakup's aftermath, allows Wilson to show off an impressive, nuanced approach to a melancholy lyric, her restraint making her sorrow palpable. And what better way to forget all these troubles than to drown them in drink? "When It Rains," which Wilson co-wrote, is an infectious honky-tonk swinger in the classic style, and she gives it her best twangy reading. "Redneck Woman" may be a career song, but the tracks around it, and Wilson's 3-D personality -- which unabashedly embraces both hedonism and romanticism -- make the onset of her artistic journey a most compelling event indeed.

I purchased this CD because of all of the hype, and ended up very disappointed. The first two songs are fun, but the rest of the album is a snoozer. I wouldn't waste your money.

This album covers a wide range from Mainstream Hype to the Emotive. Wilson compromises her talent to appeal to the masses yet shows her real talent in the more personable tracks. The mainstream titles are catchy; fun; yet not very cleaver. But her more obscure titles really draw you into the art of her music. Country music is not my first forte. However, for this R&B fan, Wilson's album is a great addition to my music collection.

I got this CD soon after it came out. I love it. Gretchen's voice is sensational. I love every song on the album. She has her roots from singers like Loretta Lynn and Tanya Tucker. She was discovered by the duo Big & Rich who invited her to their weekly Muzik Mafia shows. They were all down in their careers at the time, so the Mafia was like a support group for them. Then they beacame larger and larger, now look at them today! Her four singles are Redneck Woman (Breakout Hit), Here For The Party, When I Think About Cheatin' (Shows a different side of Gretchen), and Homewrecker. Every single did very well on the charts. Her album remains in the Top 10 on the country Billboard Chart after more than a year and a half out. It has surpassed 4X Platinum. This CD is a must have for any country or non country Fan!

I don't know about any of you, but Gretchen Wilson ROCKS! She can sing way better than almost any female currently in country, and she's hot too! GO GRETCHEN!

The only weak track is "Chariot" and it ain't that weak. Influences probably came from Skynard, Allman Bros., Hank Jr.,Tanya, Patty, Terri, Loretta. Best new female artist since Sara Evans. Loved it.

What can I say about Gretchen Wilson, is that she was born to be a star, let me just say that the song "Redneck Woman" is outstanding, it is about time that she gets some attention because she is going to be the "Next Big Thing" for many years to come.

Gretchen Wilson has to be one of the best country singers today. I like the attitude that she has in her songs, like "Here For the Party" and "Homewrecker." I also like how she shows her softer side with songs like "When I Think About Cheating" and "Holding You"(my favorite on the cd). If you're tired of listening to the endless parade of Shania-clones, give this CD a try.

Gretchen Wilson is probably the best country singer ever. The attitude of her songs(especially "Redneck Woman and "Homewrecker")are perfect.

Fabulous talent. Every song on this CD is really good. A lot of up tempo, high energy tunes. "When I Think About Cheating" and "Holding You" are great ballads, what a voice! "Homewrecker" is reminescent of Loretta Lynn's "Fist City". I highly recommend this CD.

Gretchen Wilson is the best damn country singer there is out here.. Ilove her songs, "When I think about Cheatin", "Redneck Woman" and "Here For The Party"...

The first two songs "Here for the Party" and "Redneck Woman" are quite catchy and the lyrics are relatable to a lot of people. That's why Gretchen Wilson has been an instant hit in country music but the rest of the songs are horrible. It's obvious that Gretchen doesn't have great vocal talent & it doesn't help for her to sing these love songs. She should have stuck to catchy tunes.
