Here I Stay by Barbara Michaels

The Haunting

Turning a decrepit old mansion into a beautiful country inn isn't easy, but for Andrea Torgesen, the hard work is exactly what her young brother, Jim, needs after a serious car accident. Or, so she thinks—until Jim is haunted by unearthly voices and eerie visions, and becomes obsessed with a long-neglected graveyard. Suddenly, the impossible becomes terrifyingly possible and Andrea must battle an evil force that threatens to destroy their lives.

Not great. The book ls atmospheric but it has no real plot, unlikeable characters, and always most dissapointing, a horrible ending. But all in all, not the worst book ive read.

I am second to none in my love for Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters. But I confess that what I love most is not so much the mystery as it is the fascinating detail she manages to tuck in with every bite of eerie/mysterious. I loved Shattered Silk for its wealth of detail about vintage couture; I adored Into the Darkness for all the obscure info about antique jewelry. Here I Stay has lots of lovely stuff about running a B&B, but...I don't know. The haunt-y story was a bit weak, the heroine a bit too possessive and manipulative - it was hard to make common cause with a woman whose central goal in life is to Velcro her young brother to her side for eternity. Beach read?

I really enjoy almost all of Elizabeth Peters/ Barbara Michaels books but lately I've come to cherish the ones set in the Maryland/ DC area the most. This is a new favorite of mine. I enjoyed how the seasons were captured. Wish she'd write a book set in Berlin MD or Ocean City but thats just me...
