I love stories of heroes. People with strength and courage who stand up for themselves and others. Even when standing up would be uncomfortable and sometimes downright dangerous. There have been many in history who have given everything for what they believe. Joan of Arc and the ancient apostles of Jesus Christ spring instantly to mind. And Jesus Christ, Himself. There are modern examples as well. And many are showcased in the new book by Marlene Bateman Sullivan: Heroes of Faith, True Stories of Faith and Courage.  Marlene has collected stories of people who survived impossible hardships, such as A.C. Christensen in a Japanese prison camp. Held to their beliefs in the face of unsympathetic regimes like the Torontos in Germany. Carried on through vast physical challenges as did blind Samuel Jenkinson. Each is a story of determination, strength and real courage. I loved this book.  I am in awe of such people. And wonder if I would ever have their courage. I hope I never have to find out . . .

We are always looking for "heroes." People to inspire us and make us want to be better. This book offers up numerous heroes to help us do just this. Some stories are miraculous, while some just show the simple guidance that we often receive. All of them though serve as an example of people who tried their hardest and made the best out of many different sets of difficult circumstances.  This book is great! It's full of people, some familiar, some unfamiliar, who did miraculous things. While many seem to be from the earlier parts of LDS church history, there are some that fall closer to current times as well. At any rate they are all great examples. One thing I loved about this book is that everything is in smaller-sized chapters. This makes it easy to read, and it would be easy to adapt these for lessons or FHE. It also would be easier for younger people to read, and I think the stories would really entertain and impress them. This book does a great job of showing a variety of people under some very differing circumstances, but they all have one thing in common. They were able to do great things in their lives because of their faith. We would all do well to try and follow their examples in our own lives. Book provided for review.

Story after story is told in this book about amazing people who stood up valiant and strong against great persecutions and against impossible odds. These stories are all true! Some of the people you will recognize and some you will be hearing their story for the first time. They all belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They all have stories of courage and faith. They are all "Heroes of Faith." How blessed we are to have these stories brought together in one book. How blessed we are to have the courage of others to lean on while we endure our own persecutions. How blessed we are to have wonderful writers like Marlene Bateman Sullivan.
