We're in a world saturated with vampire stories - and for me they never get old. I love the genre. Boland gives me exactly what I need from a vamp novel (more Rice less Meyer) because she sets this in two time periods. I love the old world Gothic vibe, it's richly described, the layers are creepy, moreish, and addictive. I couldn't have stopped reading this if I'd tried. This book is a gripping page turner that made me want the next one!

This was an amazing read. I could not even begin to put it down. So many twists and turns. Shalini Boland does an incredible job with originality and her writing style is spectacular. I really want to see this as a movie, or television show. The world setting and character were so well written you can literally see the story play out as you read. The storyline grabs you from the beginning, with suspense, romance, and mystery. The pace keeps the story moving, till the end, and what an ending it was. I found nothing distastefully with this book. A definite NYT Bestseller in my opinion. One I'd love to see another book to. Wow. What an unexpected find. I was impressed enough with this to actually sit down and encourage others to give this a go. I'm so glad I got my NookColor. I'm finding gems like this. I was just browsing looking for something interesting to read - and found I couldn't put this down until I'd finished. I wouldn't compare it so much with the Twilight saga except for possibly the vampire/human connection (this no--comparison is a good thing - and I do like the Twilight Saga). I liked the parallel multi-historical time storyline letting you get to know the two main characters in their own worlds and get invested in them, before they come together. Definitely worth your time - I'm really glad I gave this book a shot - and look forward to reading the next in the series. I definitely want to see where Shalini goes with these characters. :)

I loved this book. It had everything I want from a novel. Maddy is a great character with attitude and I was rooting for her from the word go. There's so much edge of the seat suspense and the story takes you to unexpected and original places. I also like the contrast with modern day and historical - it added to the excitement. It was a great read which I think both teens and adults will love.

I always look for authors who can spin a new view on the age old vampire story. Boland did just that. She took a story which has been told two ways from Sunday, and was able to drop in a new twist. I'm impressed and look forward to the next chapter in the lives of the Marchwood Vampires. This is on of the few novels I have allowed myself to read due to the influx of writing on the topic. I found myself tired of the same old predictable spin, and longed for someone to write a tale which would not only create questions but answer them as well. I sincerely hope Boland expands on the history and the origins she creatively put into play early. I would hate to see such a wonderful, imaginative and very creative story line fall into the wide trap of cookie cutter writing. Thanks Boland for a wonderful and 'hard to put down' read.

Ok so im a major fan of jr ward gena showalter sherylyn kenyon ( horrid spelling i know and i appoligize) and i will say im into more erotic paranormal but they have gotten very repitious and my fav authors just arent producing what i enjoyed the most about them in the begining. I found this book when i was book stalking and WOW im a 30 yr old woman and have read countless books and i havnt read a book that completelly ensnared me since my first kenyon book. The way the author described the settings and surroundings was amazing and breath taking at times. Im a visual reader and if the book is good my entire head fills up with the world they create. He jumped from eras flawlessly and the characters had true depth and vastly different. The love angle and ease of acceptence was a bit far fetched but considering that was not the focus of the book it truly dosnt matter .. i would like to thank the aurthor for giving me a book that reminded me why i love reading and that vampire books are not all twilightish r erotic. Thank you and im dying to start the next book....

This is one of those books you just have to keep reading. The number of times I was tired next day at work because it'd kept me up until the early hours. It's a wonderful, wonderful adventure that starts off in mundane urban life and then catapaults you so hard you nearly get whiplash. Madison is great, and so is Alexandre. What's amazing is how the author gives us an original twist on the vampire novel. Beautiful, beguiling, haunting, creepy and unputdownable!

A great start to what promises to be an excellent series, Boland takes a fresh approach to the "vampire drama". The price is right and the book does not disappoint! Read. It.

Hidden is an unusual hybrid of period drama and modern drama. At first it feels as if you are reading two different books, but this method works. It was a delight to read convincing details of life in the 1800's, Indie Jones style danger, ancient legends and mysterious caverns become a dramatic thriller threaded with poetic melancholy sadness. The modern saga is so well told, Maddy and Ben being orphaned, and having the conflicts and struggles of teenage life, until living the impossible dream of inheriting money and station. Maddy is one tough cookie, and her expeditions in their new home lead to an even better dream (Mr dreamy). Growing up too fast, this is a whirlwind tale of adventure, danger, cross purposes and conflict, mixed up with an exquisite countryside and romance. It was a lively read, compelling, full of incredible descriptions and metaphors. As far as the vampire genre goes, I've never met a more likable vampire than the ones in Hidden- this one is original on many levels.

Read it. The setting is different and completely different than most typical vampire stories. The thing about it is the author gives two point of views-the vampire & the human. I enjoy reading about the old times with modern life still present.

Strange how one often finds the best books under the YA label. I'll be 60 in two days. It didn't stop me very much enjoying this. A vampire novel - but a long way from the recent plethora of cliche vampire novels. Two interweaving stories, sulky teenager Madison, and Alexandre, from the 18th century finally joining and becoming the story of both. The characters are vivid, though I couldn't help but sympathise more with Madison. A romance and a thriller.

Really great book. Each chapter that I finished left me anticipating more of the story. The characters are well developed and had me cheering them on. I'm really looking foward to the second book. I totally recommend this book to anyone, you won't be disappointed.

Was a bit nervous with all the twilight references, but was plesantly surprised at the twists and turns. I like all the characters and it's fascinating to watch their journey. Being in my 30's I was hoping the author hadn't dumbed anything down and was glad I didn't find that to be the case. Had no issues with the British slang at all. Highly recommend so give it a shot.

Hidden is an extremely entertaining read. I don't get a lot of time for reading, but sailed through this. Straight away it grips you with the amazing situation that feisty, rebellious Madison, the heroine, finds herself in when she discovers she is the heir to Marchwood. But it's not just an enormous house that she inherits... Alexandre is lovely (there's no other word I can think of). He is a vampire, but is essentially still a human, and a very lovely human at that. It's hardly surprising that Madison falls for him, and great fun to see how he adapts to the modern world that he wakes up in. The whole thing is written with humour and an adventurous spirit. The ending was very satisfying, and I look forward to seeing what happens when the next book comes out.

I can't wait until the next installment on this book. I thought it was great, and I liked how she wrote about the characters seperately and then wove them together. It will be interesting to see how everything turns out!

Hidden is the first book in the Marchwood Vampire Series by Shalini Boland. This story is a breath of fresh air in the young adult paranormal genre. Spanning centuries and continents, this lively story takes us on an intriguing journey of discovery and horror that you don't want to end. The story follows Madison Greene and her brother Ben, as their lives take a dramatic turn for the better. Moving out of foster care into their own home and immense wealth. But along with the wealth comes responsibility and intrigue. In this tale we see the past merge with the present in a chilling and exciting way, as Madison searches for answers and finds them from the most unexpected person ; Alexander Chevalier whom just happens to be a vampire. The characters within the novel come to life and jump right off the page, I found myself easily immersed in the story from the late Victorian era of Alexandre's journey to Cappadocia, where he and his family unlock pure evil, then submerged into Madison's world of dealing with the present. The characters have depth and are very well rounded, along with the supporting characters that bring more insights and comical humor to the story. The love story is very well portrayed and done tastefully and well suited for a young adult audience. I found myself once again caught up in the feelings of first love. This book is extremely well written and I was very impressed with the author's ability to tell two stories in completely different styles of writing; late Victorian for Alexandre's story, and present day for Madison's. She did a fantastic job and both stories flowed well throughout the entire book to merge into a great ending. One of the things I really enjoyed about this novel, was the author's ability to create terrifying and chilling scenes within the book. She led me through my own imagination as my mind brought up images of what was taking place. Much to my surprise I might add since I love gritty detail. The author also had a way with humor as the characters interacted in a truly comical way when Alexandre a Victorian Noble tries to find is way in the modern world. All in all this book was a great read and I recommend it to anyone who loves a good vampire story. This is a unique tale that stands out among the rest due to the author's wonderful storytelling and her fresh new perspective on Vampires. I am looking forward to reading the next book in series "Thicker than Blood, Book 2" I give this book 4.5 Stars!
