Hidden Monster by Amanda Strong

For seventeen-year-old Samantha Campbell, running back woods trails usually means freedom from her less-than-perfect life. That is, until the day a morning run turns into a living nightmare. When Samantha wakes up to find herself bound to a dirty, pinstriped mattress, she realizes she’s anything but free. With a masked abductor repeatedly injecting her arm with an unknown substance while holding her captive, Samantha tries in vain to find out what he wants, but he refuses to speak. Until the day he breaks his silence and his twisted words are worse than what she’d imagined. He promises her one day she will fall in love with him but the best part will be that she won't know who he is... until it's too late.

Finding herself freed from captivity, with her captor still at large, Samantha is on guard against everything and everyone around her. Unfortunately, walling up her heart proves difficult when eighteen-year-old Blake Knightley moves in next door. When Samantha starts experiencing strange changes within her, she realizes her captor may have left her more damaged than she originally thought. Now she must turn to Blake for help in order to unearth the truth behind the monster who started this all... or risk experiencing worse things than just falling in love.

About the Author

Born in Dekalb, Illinois, Amanda Strong has called Utah, Arizona, Hawaii, Virginia and now New Mexico home. Amanda has been spinning tales since she was a child. Her family still remembers finding young Amanda with her bright pink glasses, hiding in random corners of the house while scribbling away in one of her many spiral-bound notebooks. You could say that some things never change since Amanda is still writing today. Amanda began her writing career when she uploaded The Awakener, her first full-length novel, on Wattpad where it received over 430,000 reads in four weeks. She was blown away and humbled by the reader support and feedback she received. Because of The Awakener's success as a non-published book, she was asked to talk on 1400 KSTAR about her story.

Awesome read I haven't had this much fun reading in a very very long time. I thank you they should make a movie. This didn't drag on it didn't focus to much in one spot and it wasn't all over the place wonderful

I found this on Wattpad. Enjoyed the excerpt so much I had to buy it and I was not disappointed. I really hope there will be at least a sequel if not a series.

Wonderful and whimsical... with a twist of ‘Who done it’ and police crime, along with romance. It is a must read!! All this combined into a new story line and anew world of creatures.

Interesting plot. Good twists. Very creative imagination to invent the character. The background info on dragonflies is interesting. Could have used more symbolism with it though, might have made it more intriguing. I hate serial books though. I feel it breaks up the flow of the story. Especially since it is done just to sell more books. Now I gotta find the next book to finish this storyline.

When I saw this title I was a little unsure. I saw who the publisher was and I wasn't going to read it. But, it's wonderful!!! It's a great story that has you in suspense the entire time. Fast paced and not preachy. I love it

Loved the new spin on an often tired genre! The characters are well fleshed out and engaging, the plot twists leading to the ultimate surprise had me reading this in just under 2 hour. Couldn't put it down! Am excited to see where the characters move onto and what happens next! Buying up all the future titles in this series as soon as possible! ?

Lots of twists and so nice to have a clean love triangle even if it is a confusing one!

From the very beginning, I didn't know what to expect or where the author was taking the reader with the story. Very good read!

Some spelling errors. A couple of places where the writing could've been smoother . Overall , a good entertaining read.

Once I started this I couldn't put it down! Great flowing plot with lots of unexpected twists and turns. I can usually guess who the villan is but this one even surprised me! I really liked these characters. The author made them likeable and complex. It was refreshing to read a free book that is not so riddled with errors in grammar and spelling that it is distracting to the story. I would definitely read more books written by this author!

It was great! The book was well-written, and the characters were interesting. I was surprised by the Samantha/Sammy thing, but it fit the story very well. I'm not convinced we've seen the last of Sammy, though; maybe we'll actually meet her in the next book, instead of just briefly hearing about her from other characters? Note: I read this book for free via NetGalley.

I started reading Hidden Monster and I think I had a preconceived notion that it what about something else. Who knows what I was thinking but I was very pleasantly surprised that it was about something I really enjoy reading about. The writing is very controlled and moves along very well. It never drags even though at some points you are left wondering what is going. This only develops mystery around certain aspects of the story and I really don’t want to spoil any of the story because I had the oh my goodness face and I want everyone to have that look and feeling. Ms. Strong has a natural knack for making us feel for her characters and always wanting to see the best in them even though they may not be what you think they are. This ability makes you feel deeply for one of the characters to only realize he really wasn’t what he seemed. Dang those feels. The oh my goodness face I was referring to earlier is the mad twist at the end and I will be the first one to say. Well, Done. I didn’t see that coming. I wasn’t even in the general location of that hook. Wow, Ms. Strong thank you for totally blowing my mind and making me rethink this entire story. You just never know and maybe I didn’t read into some of the clues that were given but they were not really in your face. This book does delve into the fantasy realm and I enjoyed that part of the book because I like when fantasy meets the real world. This story is set in modern time and looks just like our world. If you read the synopsis of this book it gives you the feeling that the whole book is about her abduction. It is only the first part of this book. The rest you will have to read about because to tell you one small thing would ruin this fantastic book. I don’t want to do that. Let just suffice to say that what happens in that small cabin will dramatically change Samantha for the rest of her life. Hidden Monster has so many layers that to let you know most of them would ruin the book and I am almost tempted to write another review of this book with spoilers for those that would like to read that. I have never done that, but I am almost reduced to that because I want to talk about some of the plot points. Having said that. I will not do that. I positively think that is great discussion book for book clubs. It is meant for discussion and will leave you with a book hangover. I didn’t read another book for almost a week after reading this. Overall this book is wonderful, well written and very plot surprising. It’s not every day that you read a book and be totally surprised by the ending. Hidden Monster is for anyone who loves fantasy, young adult books, or looking for something different. It is a clean read (romance is sweet) and you can let you teens read this without any problems. I would also recommend this to adults as well because of the complexity of the story.

I was given an ARC of Hidden Monster by Amanda Strong.  The title of the book thrown me off. I had no idea what to expect with this story. When it opens up with a girl being abducted, I thought that is what the story was going to be about, but no, it surprised me again... Samantha is not your typical girl. Many years ago she was involved in a near fatal drowning, and then being abducted had really changed her. While she was healing, Samantha meet Blake. She had no idea that he knew what was going on with her, but she develops a close friendship with him and feelings. Throw in her best friend Mack, the story gets interesting. Samantha finally figures out what happened to her and what had caused her to change.  There are many twists to this plot. It changed with characters that I didn't expect to and ended with a twist that I never saw coming. This is not the typical paranormal YA read. Each one of the characters were well developed. I didn't want to put the book down and was disappointed when it came to an end.  I hope Amanda Strong continues on with this series because I want to know what is going to happen between Samantha and Blake and the rest of the characters.
