“Pinter is in fine form with Hide Away. You’ll burn through the pages.” —David Baldacci

From the bestselling author of the Henry Parker series comes a page-turning thriller about a vigilante who’s desperate to protect her secrets—and bring a killer to justice.

On the surface, Rachel Marin is an ordinary single mother; on the inside, she’s a fierce, brilliant vigilante. After an unspeakable crime shatters her life, she changes her identity and moves to a small town in Illinois, hoping to spare her children from further trauma…or worse. But crime follows her everywhere.

When the former mayor winds up dead, Rachel can’t help but get involved. Where local detectives see suicide, she sees murder. They resent her for butting in—especially since she’s always one step ahead. But her investigative genius may be her undoing: the deeper she digs, the harder it is to keep her own secrets buried.

Her persistence makes her the target of both the cops and a killer. Meanwhile, the terrifying truth about her past threatens to come to light, and Rachel learns the hard way that she can’t trust anyone. Surrounded by danger, she must keep her steely resolve, protect her family, and stay one step ahead, or else she may become the next victim.

Wow! This is the first novel by Jason Pinter which I've read, but I can guarantee that it won't be my last - what a cracking read! Rachel Marin is a single mother like no other; she possesses skills and abilities that the ordinary woman in the street knows nothing about - and neither do her children! From the first, we realise that a shocking crime occurred. So shocking that she uproots her children and transforms herself into a very different woman, all with the aim of protecting her children. When the body of the mayor of Illinois, their new home town, is found, Rachel can't help getting involved. In her eyes, she's helping law enforcement; in their eyes, she's interfering. Only when her information turns out to be true, they have to sit up and take notice - but they don't have to like her continuing appearance and ideas about their case. And they are not the only ones .. Rachel 'helping' the authorities leaves her with a target on her back . . . From the very beginning, this author has a way of beguiling his readers; I slipped in between the pages and just could not put this down! Rachel is very much an enigma; but throughout the book she is revealed just enough at a time to make sense whilst the story continues on, getting deeper into things whilst the reader wonders what she knows that we don't? Make no doubts about it, this is a stunning thriller which doesn't finish until the very end! A very cleverly plotted book, expertly written and terrifically enjoyable - I'm so pleased to have discovered this author, and fully intend to catch up with his others books. I'm thoroughly delighted that this is the first in a new series, and will most definitely be watching out for the next book. A gripping and exciting thriller, and one which deserves all five sparkling stars. If you enjoy an unpredictable and riveting read, Jason Pinter is definitely an author to watch out for!

Rachel Marin met the former mayor a while back .. before she was murdered. The police think this was either an accident or suicide ... but Rachel knows it was murder. Now all she has to do is to convince the detectives who are leading the investigation. But Rachel has no love of the cops ... she doesn't trust them to do what's right. Rachel has a secret ... one that traumatized her and her young children. She's changed their names, moved across the country, and started a new life for them. She's afraid her secrets may be uncovered, but she can't just walk away. She inserts herself into the investigation ... much to the cops' displeasure. They resent her for butting in ... but what she tells them makes them take a second look. Her sheer determination to get at the truth makes her a target of both the cops ... and a killer. This is a great start to what looks like will be a terrific series. Rachel is a unique character... and one who will bear watching in the future. As a crime fiction, this is well written with deftly drawn characters and plenty of twists and turns to keep the fingers moving at a fast pace ... just to see what happens next. Looking forward to the next book in this series! Many thanks to the author / Thomas & Mercer / Amazon Publishing / Netgalley for the digital copy of this terrific crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Hide Away by Jason Pinter Suspenseful thriller with plenty of twists and turns. Astutely portrayed multidimensional, characters. Rachel Marin and Sarreno would make for an interesting partnership, either personal or professional, in future books of this series. Very entertaining, fast paced read. Hide Away by Jason Pinter is a very highly recommended procedural thriller and a wonderful start to a new series. Rachel Marin is a mom to two kids who became a vigilante after an unspeakable crime shatters their lives. The novel opens seven years in the past on the day Rachel's life changed and then jumps to the present day when a mugger jumps Rachel on her way home. She expertly incapacitates him and hurries home to her children, Eric, 13, and Megan, 7. The family is now living in Ashby, Illinois, a small town where Rachel is hoping her kids can be safe and they can live a quiet incognito life. When Rachel sees a news story that a former mayor of her town is found dead, most people are thinking suicide, but Rachel is one intelligent woman and she immediately figures out from the news account who the victim was, the former mayor of Ashby, Constance Wright, and that it was murder. She calls the detectives anonymously and tells them what she thinks and why. Detectives John Serrano and Leslie Tally are on the case and they track Rachel down to question her. The detectives resent her involvement in the case, but Rachel wants justice for Constance and can't leave it alone. I'm just going to admit that once I started this thriller I stayed up way-too-late reading "just one more chapter" to finish it. I really like the character of Rachel and I liked the flashbacks that explained how she made herself into the woman she is today. Yes, she is a vigilante, but she ultimately is trying to seek justice to protect others from harm. We also won't learn exactly what the trauma was that changed her life until the very end. This means there are two cases being followed in the narrative - the present day murder mystery and the mystery about Rachel's past. The writing and plot development is exceptional. All the characters are well-developed and have backstories and an emotional depth to them. The plot is fast paced, the suspense is relentless, and chapters set in both the present and past are equally compelling. I like the complexity of the plot and had no trouble following what was happening in both timelines. Hide Away is an extraordinary start to a new series and I can't wait until the next book is released. (Normally I read and review closer to publication dates, but my ARC initially had an earlier publication date.) Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of Thomas & Mercer

This novel grabbed me from the very beginning when a calm domestic scene turns to one of horror that changes the lives of a woman and her two children. The horrific happening and its aftermath are slowly revealed, which serves to keep up suspense and keep the reader turning the pages. Rachel Marin runs away with her children and assumes a new identity. She has turned herself into a skilled self defense expert while trying to stay under the radar. Her only true goal is to keep her children safe. That safety is put in jeopardy when Rachel becomes involved in the death of the former mayor of her town. The police want to say suicide, but Rachel is sure it is murder. As she starts to investigate, she is afraid the secrets she has harbored for seven years will be brought to light. This is the first in a new series with a strong female protagonist. I am thrilled that more and more male authors are using females as main characters. All the characters in this fast paced novel are fully drawn and relatable. I know from experience most women turn into tigers if their children are threatened . Jason Pinter is a new to me author. I have read nothing but high praise about his earlier Henry Parker series. I look forward to spending more time with Rachel in upcoming books. A big thank you to Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to read and review this fascinating mystery.

In Hide Away, the present day mystery involves the death of the former mayor in what, at first glance, appears to be suicide. In a separate timeline we learn how single mom Rachel turned into the vigilante she is today, and what that means to her. This is the start of a new series. The main point of view is Rachel's, but we also hear from the investigating detectives; all three are intriguing characters I look forward to reading more about in the future. The mystery is fast paced which is a nice balance to the slow burn of learning about Rachel. I recommend Hide Away to those who enjoy character driven mysteries. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC. The opinions in this review are honest and my own. #HideAway #mystery #thriller
