Teen boys and reading? It's tough to make that a successful match. I've struggled to find meaningful novels for middle school boys for over 30 years, and a handful of authors have provided the bridge. Nick Boorman is now added to that handful (and yes, it's still a handful) of authors who "speak" to boys and help to make reading a pleasant pastime, not an empty chore. "High School Hero" has fast, believable sports action and dialogue because Boorman is an athlete and a coach. The problems that protagonist Gunnar faces as a freshman in high school will resonate with current teens because they're authentic. Gunnar's not perfect, but he always does his best, which will please parents. The book will not intimidate because of its length, and there's a good amount of white space on the pages, making it pleasing to the reader, especially struggling readers. This book is a winner. Keep writing, Mr. Boorman: you've found a winning formula for middle school males!
