Despite the authors almost poetic start to the book, she quickly gets to the point and is very comical. Easy to read, not overly technical for those who are just starting out. This book isn't slammed with a ton of info to overwhelm the reader if they are just starting out on the subject. A great stepping stone and a good book to "plant the seed" if you will.

This book is awesome. It is easy to read and follow with well defined chapters and great photos. For someone who is just getting into backpacking this book is a must have. It goes over just about everything you need to know about backpacking in a concise and entertaining manner from the physical technicalities of hiking to gear- what to wear, how to wear it, what to bring, how to pack it as well as going into choosing the right kinds of gear to suit your specific needs. Food, insects and wildlife, and finding your way 'using map and compass' is also covered. It is incredibly informative without becoming complicated and tedious to read. I highly recommend this book... read it before your adventure begins and take it along to use as a guide along the way!

I have never backpacked, and I was flirting with the idea. This book was so insightful and extremely entertaining, it excited me so much about backpacking that I am now ready to get my own gear and hit the trails! Very inspirational!

My wife and I read this book from cover to cover the first night we purchased it! Karen Berger combines wit and wisdom along with real-life stories to demonstrate the best (and worst) way to hit the trail. There are guidelines on equipment and packing, as well as useful information on navigation and hiking. However, the book only briefly covers personal hygiene, including the best Leave No Trace (LNT) methods of cleaning the campsite and gear. One of the nicest features of this book is it¿s compact size and waterproof (resistant?) pages and cover. Perfect for fitting into a backpack.
