I haven't read a book by the excellent Nicola Griffith in many years, and Hild reminded me how much I love her storytelling. This isn't an easy read: the Anglo-Saxon names, the complex personal relationships, the intricacies of the court, and the sheer weight of researched detail did slow me down in the beginning. However, once I got into this book, I couldn't put it down. I was also reminded of the subtle prose of Ursula Le Guin and Patricia McKillip. This is a full, chewy read, and it satisfies on many levels.

If you choose to read this book, read it in hardback; the font in the paperback edition is too small and that makes it hard to read for any length of time. The author uses many very ancient words and that does not make reading it any easier. Although she has included a glossary; it is minimal and very distracting as you are always flipping back and forth. Or, ignoring those words or guessing at the meanings, both of which may lead you astray as far as the story is concerned. Editors? This book is one example of a number of books I have picked up recently, that make me wonder what-the-heck an editor does. Do they even read the books they are suppose to edit? This book is challenging and sometimes hard to follow. I may or may not finish it. Although at this point,(about half way) I am still reading. So, you may assume that the story has some interest. That would be correct. It is set in an interesting time, after the Romans and before a united England. The author has a great deal of knowledge about the time period and the daily activities of the people, royal and not-so-royal. The various beliefs and religious perspectives are all dynamic and in flux; making for an interesting story. Even if it is difficult to read and sometimes confusing. I will add that this is my book-club's pick for January 2015. But, some people have indicated they lost patience and interest and will not finish reading it.

Wonderful book, beautifully written, but poorly formatted for the smaller nooks. Huge margins mean you have to turn the page after a sentence or two. Luckily I have a nook hd+. I was only able to adjust the settings from unbearable to irritating. Buy the paper version, a nook hd, or at least check out the free sample before you commit!
