Alexis Yeung did everything right....only to watch everything go horribly, horribly wrong. Broken and angry, Alexis high-tails it to Europe, determined to face the world on her own terms and without consequence. Which includes a mind-blowing night with a sexy, scarred stranger.
Except, embittered former pararescuer Luke Jackson isn't exactly a stranger. He's supposed to keep an eye on Alexis without her knowing. Ending up in bed together was definitely not the plan. Now he's chasing her (admittedly hot) ass across Europe, a game of cat and mouse that always ends with the two of them tangled up in the sheets.
Something in their scarred, damaged souls calls to each other. And God help them, the sex is unbelievably hot. But if Alexis discovers who Luke really is, he'll lose the one thing that makes him feel whole...

The woman in front of him ducked into an alley, and it was everything Luke Jackson could do not to curse. If he didn't have this blasted bum leg, he'd have had no problem keeping up with her — or remaining undetected. Another glance at the photo his ex — squad mate Flannery sent him three days ago, and he gritted his teeth and picked up his pace. Every stride sent a dull pain from his knee. It had been replaced almost two years ago after being shot out on what was supposed to be a routine search-and-rescue. The doc said he'd made a startling recovery. She'd called him a miracle. He sure as hell didn't feel like a miracle when they were serving him his walking papers.
But there was no use thinking about what he lost.
He was here to keep Ryan Flannery's idiot childhood friend safe. She was the reason he'd been camping out in Cork and ghosting around Blarney Castle for the last forty-eight hours. Her sister was sure that she'd go here first, so this was where he'd shown up to pick up the trail.
What kind of woman just up and left her life behind to backpack through Europe alone?
Obviously not a smart one.
It was because of her impulsive decision to take off with only a text message as good-bye that he'd been sitting in the rain for so goddamn long, he was in danger of never getting warm again. It was worse in a way, because it'd just been a fine mist all day, rather than a torrential downpour that would make it easier to justify staying indoors. If he and Flannery hadn't been in the PJs together and fought their way through hell and back more times than he could count, he wouldn't be in this goddamn country, camped out because he couldn't guarantee that this woman wouldn't make an appearance.
Sure enough, she'd waltzed up around lunchtime, and now here they were.
He reached the alley entrance. With his luck, the woman was going to get jumped before he could catch her. He hadn't expected her to hike back to Cork from Blarney Castle, and he hadn't been able to risk a cab for fear that she'd get into trouble while he wasn't watching her.
He never should have agreed to this favor.
Luke turned the corner — and got kicked in the face.
He hit the wall hard enough to bruise, and barely got his hands up in time to deflect the next blow. He managed to block her next few punches, his body going through the motions like it had a thousand times before. He glimpsed a flash of hazel eyes and a determined expression, and then Alexis Yeung zeroed in on his damaged knee. Pain exploded behind his eyelids, but even that wouldn't have normally slowed him down. No, it was the damn knee giving out and sending him tumbling to the ground that did him in.
Luke rolled onto his back just in time to catch sight of a can that looked suspiciously like pepper spray. Fuck that. "What the hell?" He lurched up and grabbed her wrist, shoving her arm wide so the spray hit the ground next to him instead of his face.
"Why are you following me?" She tried to jerk away, but he wasn't letting her go anywhere until he had control of the canister.
He squeezed the pressure point in her wrist and snatched the can as it fell from her hand. It was only then that he registered her question. "What?"
"Why are you following me?" She scrambled back a few steps, but her voice was low and calm despite the circumstances. "You know what? Don't bother answering that. I'm calling the police."
Shit. That was the last thing he needed. As he climbed to his feet, Luke searched for something to say that would make her pause enough to listen to reason. He couldn't tell her the truth — Flannery had been pretty damn clear on that. If she knew her friends and sister back home didn't trust her, Alexis would never forgive any of them. Which sounded pretty damn juvenile, but it was the least of his concerns right now. If she called the Garda, he would have no choice but to come clean. "What are you talking about?"
"You've been following me ever since I left the castle. I might be a tourist, but I'm not stupid."
If he didn't have a bum knee, she never would have known he was there. The failure burned his throat almost worse than the pepper spray would have. "You're crazy. It was a nice day so I wanted to walk."
"Even with that limp? In the rain?"
Well, hell. She'd noticed a lot more than he would have given her credit for, even with his staying well back on the road. "I'm not a cripple." Though when he compared his limits now to what they'd been before his injury, he sure as hell felt like one. He scrubbed a hand over his face. "And you obviously thought it was a nice enough day for a walk in the rain. Pot, meet kettle."
She paused, clearly taking him in. Alexis Yeung, nurse and apparently sufferer of a mental breakdown when her perfect life didn't go exactly as planned. Really, she was just throwing a temper tantrum by jetting off to Europe to find herself or whatever it was that high-maintenance women did.
She didn't look like much. Oh, sure, she was beautiful in a very busty Asian-babes way, but what kind of woman spent the day hiking down a road and managed to look so perfectly put together? It wasn't natural. Her jeans were rolled up to show off her hiking boots, and her white T-shirt didn't have a smudge of dirt on it. He tried not to notice how the fabric strained over her breasts, and failed.
"Stop staring at my chest."
"Woman, you just attacked me for no reason. The least I deserve is to check you out." She crossed her arms under breasts, and he raised his eyebrows. "You're not exactly helping my concentration, darlin'."
"You're a pig." The woman had a stare on her that made him think of his auntie. He shoved the comparison away. Aunt Rose wasn't anything like Alexis. She didn't run from her problems — or other people's problems, for that matter — not even when they were literally knocking on her door. This woman obviously did, or he wouldn't be in a back alley in Cork getting grilled.
Alexis looked like she wanted to kick him again. "Why did you turn down the alley?"
This, at least, he had an answer for. "You're a woman alone. I thought you might be in danger."
"So you came riding to my rescue on your white horse?" And now she was laughing at him.
He coughed, hating the slow heat of embarrassment working its way through him. He wasn't the one in the wrong here. "Only an idiot wanders down a dark alley alone."
"I'm more than capable of taking care of myself."
A fact Flannery had left out in his description of her, which made Luke wonder what else he'd left out. "Against a man with a bum leg." Which hurt like a bitch after the combination of the hike and the beating she'd given it.
"Whatever you have to tell yourself to sleep at night." She paused. "Give me back my pepper spray."
"Not a chance." There was nothing to guarantee she wouldn't try to spray him again, and he'd suffered through enough shit today.
"Yeah, well, you lost the right to it when you attacked me." He sounded like a grumpy old man, but her very presence pushed buttons he didn't know he had.
No, that was a goddamn lie. He knew every single one. Hell, he was more button than man these days.
She glared. "I'm leaving now. If you try to follow me again, we'll go another round and I'll come out on top. Again."
If there wasn't the slightest wavering in her voice, he might actually believe she was an international badass like she seemed to think. Then again, if this little slip of nothing could get the drop on him, then he'd fallen even further than he could have guessed. Humiliation tore through him, demanding he win back some of his damaged pride. "Darlin', you got the drop on me once. It wouldn't happen again."
"Right. Because you're not following me."
"Nope." Though he kind of wanted to douse her in cold water for how smug she sounded. Luke shrugged out of his pack. He heard more than saw her tense. "Relax, Rambo. I'm just tucking this away for now for safekeeping." He shoved the pepper spray into his pack, needing to do something to keep her from taking off. He didn't know how much more jaunting around he could take today. Add in the bonus of not knowing where the hell she was staying — or where she was going next — and he had to do something drastic. "The least you can do is buy me a drink after attacking me."
"Attacking you? That's rich. Maybe you shouldn't be creeping into alleys after lone women. When you're acting like a predator, expect to be treated like one."
She had a point, which only served to annoy him more. Luke shifted and tried to hold back a wince when his knee protested. "Buy me a drink and we'll call it even." At least that would give her crazy ass a reason to sit still for a little while. If he could get her talking, maybe he could figure out her next step to self-discovery or whatever the hell she was trying to accomplish over here in Europe. Her sister and Flannery hadn't been the least bit helpful on that note.
"That's funny. You should be a comedian." She shook her head. "If anything, you should buy me a drink for scaring me half to death."
It was a seriously perverse joy to throw her own words back into her face. "You can take care of yourself."
She threw up her hands. "Forget this. You're obviously not suffering from any issues besides being an ass. Have a nice life."
Damn it. He'd let his mouth get away with him — again — and fucked this all up. Luke limped after her. "Hey."
Alexis paused at the mouth of the alley. "You reconsider that drink?"
He didn't want to. Buying her a drink was all but admitting that she was right. But his pride couldn't hold up to the throbbing in his knee. He took a deep breath and tried to wrestle down his anger. It wasn't completely her fault. If he weren't damaged goods, they wouldn't be in this position to begin with. "First round's on me."
Alexis Yeung wasn't sure whether to be proud of herself or feel bad for taking out some stranger who apparently was only following her to save her from some imagined bad guy. It was almost enough to make her feel guilty for attacking him, especially when he was blatantly trying not to favor his knee because of the hit she'd gotten in. Great job, Alexis. The guy is trying to be a Good Samaritan and you knock him on his ass.
But every time he opened his mouth, the guilt threatening dissolved a bit more. This guy was no different from the ones back home — totally sure he knew better than the helpless little woman that she was. He was just like her ex-fiancé Eric — the kind of man whose masculinity revolved around being the strongest, smartest, best person in the room. Anyone who threatened that was taken down a few notches with pointed comments and, if that failed, all-out bullying.
She pegged this particular man as one who skipped the rest of the steps and jumped straight to being a bully.
It would be smart to tell him where to stick his crappy attitude, and head back to the hostel to shower and search out food in a less hostile environment, but she was tired and hungry, and passing up a free drink would be silly. Plus, she was capable of spending a little more time with this guy, if only to assure herself that she really was growing and stronger than she'd been when she left Wellingford. That was the whole point of this journey she'd started, and she wasn't going to be doing any emotional growing while hiding in her hostel room.
She'd lived her entire life by the rules. Now it was time to take chances — just not stupid ones. She watched him out of the corner of her eye. Her one kick alone wouldn't cause him lasting harm. If he turns out to be a creep, I can outrun him with no problem. Or take out that knee again, and then run.
Satisfied she wasn't making a stupid decision in the name of being strong, she said, "There's a little pub down this street. Sin É."
"I know it."
Of course he did. She bet he just knew everything. How a Southern boy — and there was no mistaking that accent — knew his way around Cork was a mystery. Even if he was a world traveler, he seemed more the type to immerse himself in Dublin's frenetic energy and partying than the slightly calmer western half of the country. Then again, it was Ireland. Drinking was practically the national pastime. This guy probably fit right in.
Which reminded her — she had no idea what his name was. Alexis turned around as they stepped back onto the street and nearly gasped out loud. She'd caught glimpses of him on the road back from Blarney Castle, but they'd been just enough to place the tall, lumbering blond who seemed to cart around a chip on his shoulder. And then, when he'd come around the corner of the alley, she'd been more concerned with fighting for her life than checking him out.
Now ... now, she was forced to admit that he was attractive in a rumpled, roguish sort of way. His shaggy blond hair and almost-beard made him look like he'd be more at home wearing flannel and chopping wood than globe-trotting, but who was she to judge? She almost laughed. Who was she kidding? She was judging the hell out of him. He wore faded jeans and boots that looked like they'd seen some use. Against her better judgment, she lifted her gaze to the black T-shirt hugging his shoulders and biceps, highlighting the tattoos crawling down his arms. Only one side was finished, though, but he moved before she could pinpoint exactly what the tattoos depicted.
"Why don't you whip out your smartphone and take a picture? It'll last longer."
She didn't bother to correct him. Alexis had very specifically left her cell back in Pennsylvania when she left. She didn't want her sister, Avery, or any of their friends to have a way to track her down. This trip was something she had to do for herself, and that meant stepping away from her pregnant sister and the overprotective Flannery brothers. They'd only become more protective since Avery and Drew got engaged. She wasn't anywhere near as close to them as her sister, but they were still like stand-in older brothers when it suited them. She had a feeling it would suit them just fine in this situation. It had been annoying when she was a teenager. Now, with Ryan an experienced pararescuer and Drew the town sheriff ... Yeah, it had passed beyond annoying and into the downright ridiculous. The fallout when she got home was going to be a nightmare, but maybe then she'd finally feel centered enough to deal with it.
In the meantime, she had this guy to deal with. "What's your name?"
He hesitated, and she wondered if maybe he'd tell her to screw off. Getting a drink with him wasn't mandatory by any means, but she refused to do it while considering him "that guy" in her head. Finally, he sighed as if resigning himself to something — probably her company for however long it took to down a drink. "Luke. My name is Luke."
It seemed too clean-cut a name for him. He looked like someone who would be called Jake, or Murphy, or Adonis. She bit her lip. No, not Adonis. He was attractive, but he wasn't that attractive.
Sure. Just keep telling yourself that.
"I'm Alexis." Then, before she could talk herself out of it, she turned left toward the corner where she could already hear strains of a jaunty fiddle coming out of the pub.CHAPTER 2
Alexis could feel him at her back all the way down the street and through the pub door, and she wasn't a fan of how crowded the bar suddenly seemed as soon as Luke followed her in. He wasn't one of those massive meatheads, but he took up more than his fair share of space. He wasn't touching her, but his presence made it hard to draw a full breath.
Probably because he was such a pushy ass.
As if her thinking it was his cue, he shouldered past her and led the way to two stools tucked into the back corner of the bar. She spared a look around as she followed, taking in the Christmas lights strung across the ceiling and the band huddled around a tiny table, playing music and singing in such thick accents, she could barely understand the words. But, God, it was beautiful music. It simultaneously tore at her heart and made her toe want to tap in time. She spared them a smile as she took the seat beside Luke.
He glowered at everyone, and even the grizzled old bartender seemed hesitant to approach. Alexis sighed, already regretting agreeing to this drink. She was going to end up stuck here for hours because he was scaring off the locals. "Hey, you, tone down the He-Man menace."

## FABULOUS. I liked the first book (Avery's story), but I LOVED this one. Luke and Alexis were perfect together. I adored them BOTH which doesn't happen too often. The witty banter was so fun and the sex was HOT. Man, can this hero dirty talk. Thank you Katee for not writing Luke as a manslut. That just ruins the story for me. And double thanks for not writing Alexis as the obligatory doormat. That was so refreshing. I will definitely be reading this again and again (appx 150 pages).
I was worried about this one from the beginning but my breath was stolen quickly when Luke found Alexis .... she wasn't complete until they shared their stories ... bittersweet but so worth the tears n tissues .,,,, such a good read n such chemistry. A must read n keep them coming!
I have read a number of this authors books but this is the best one yet
I could only make it to about page 60 and then I gave up because this is just a boring story and the 1 sex scene there has been so far is about a 2 on a scale of 1-10 I feel like I wasted my money on this one
4 star I was pulled right into this story. The story has laughs, pain, secrets, and heartbreak. If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first In Bed with Mr. Wrong (Out of Uniform, #1) His to Keep (Out of Uniform, #1.5) Falling for His Best Friend (Out of Uniform, #2) This is Alexis and Luke’s story. Both Alexis and Luke are a little broken. When Alexis leaves and goes on an European tour Luke is sent to keep an eye on her. As she runs he catches her. The more time they spend together the more they push at each other. But the chemistry is out of control. Alexis pushes Luke away until she does not really want to anymore. They both are trying to figure out there life. Can they work together to help each other heal? What happens when the truth comes out as to why Luke and her met and that he was really sent to keep an eye on her. Will that be the thing that breaks them? I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read. I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the next story from this author.
My Thoughts: The first two books in the Out of Uniform series were AMAZING, so I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Alexis appears earlier in the series, and we learn about how she's unable to have children. This is what leads her to traveling. Luke is sent by Ryan to make sure that Alexis stays safe. He's supposed to just watch from a distance, but when she realizes he's following her, it leads them to actually meeting. They get a drink and then one thing leads to another... Luke knows he crossed a line and if Ryan knew what happened, he'd get his butt whooped. But he decides to stick with Alexis, keep her safe while she travels to where she needs to go. Before they know it, they're falling deep and the one secret Alexis doesn't know about why Luke is really there could shatter what they have. His Lover to Protect is a great continuation to the series. I enjoyed how honest the story is with Alexis facing the fact that she'll never be able to have children and how it affects her because of her family. Also how much Luke cares even though following her was originally just a job. Katee Robert has done it again, and I couldn't have asked for anything better. My Rating: Very Good
3.5 stars His Lover to Protect was an enjoyable read. I liked both Alexis and Luke's characters. Their story was a good read but it didn't blow me away, it held my interest and warmed my heart. I'm a big fan of Katee Robert's writing, she gives her readers relatable and likable characters with a storyline that will entertain you and keep you coming back for more.
I was really looking forward to Alexis's story after reading what she went through in Falling for His Best Friend, but I almost gave up on this book about 30% in because of the abrasive nature of the exchanges between Alexis and Luke, but it's Katee Robert so I kept at it longer than I normally would and I finally found what I was looking for: a moving story about two broken people finding hope and the strength to take another chance on life and love. Alexis Yeung made a difficult choice in a tough position, a choice that saved her life even as it changed everything for her irrevocably and when things got too hard to deal with, she took off to Europe on a journey of re-discovery and empowerment. An extremely hot encounter with a sexy stranger is part of that plan to take her life back but she does not expect the emotional connection she forges with him. Luke Jackson's identity and purpose were wrapped up in his job as a PJ and he lost it all when he was discharged due to a career-ending injury. He's still struggling with the loss and his assignment to shadow Alexis on her journey through Europe is perfect for taking his mind off his issues, even temporarily. The plan was for him to remain in the background, but after a chance run-in and a mind-blowing night with her, he begins to see that there is more to her than meets the eyes. I honestly did not care much for either Alexis or Luke at the beginning of this book and I'm not going to lie, I kept reading for the sexy times, which were smoking hot BTW, but I enjoyed HIS LOVER TO PROTECT. Underneath that gruff exterior, Luke is really a sweetheart. As much as I didn't like that he started something with Alexis without coming clean, he was in a tough spot. While I understood Alexis's issues, I felt that running off was quite cowardly but her growth was obvious as the story unfolded. I also was upset with her family for their meddling but everything worked out in the end. The story is a case of like attracting like, there was angst, pain, steamy sex and I loved the great emotional connection between Alexis and Luke. Both of them understand each other because of the losses they've been through and because of that, know just the right thing to say to pull each other from the edge, rebuild confidence and kick start the healing. I'll say this: I came for the sexy times and stayed for the emotion! Disclaimer: I received this book for free from the Publisher in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
This was a sexy, fast paced read that had two damaged people coming together and offering the other what they needed to begin to heal. We got to learn about Alexis in the previous book in this series and I was looking forward to her story – once again Katee Roberts did not disappoint! Alexis has had so many things in her life go wrong. She’s trying to pick up the pieces of her life, but every time she turns around something else happens to set her back. She just needs to get away and prove to herself she can take care of herself so she can begin to rebuild her life. Knowing how fragile she was on the inside, it was wonderful watching her make decisions for herself and stop living for everyone else’s expectations. Although she was overcompensating and definitely out of her comfort zone, when she meets Luke and begins to let him in, even if it starts off only as a physical thing, I couldn’t help but smile. Although her taking off to Europe seemed to be a bit extreme, as the story unfolds and we learn some of the back-history of her life and the significance of her journey I was totally on board with her decision. Although Luke has been sent by Alexis’s family to watch over her, he finds himself drawn to her…which he knows is not going to make her family happy. He’s been injured and carries those scars both physically and emotionally, and he’s still angry and frustrated which makes him a bit prickly to be around. After their first encounter, which ends up with them in bed, he finds himself in a bit of a predicament – how to keep an eye on Alexis as she travels all over Europe without her thinking he’s stalking her. It was so much fun to watch Luke and Alexis together. There was such tension between them right from the start and watching their defenses kick in made for some fun dialogue and scenes between them. As Luke and Alexis slowly begin to trust each other you can feel the healing in each of them begin and also sense the bond between them begin to develop and strengthen. There was no shortage of sparks and steam between these two which was hot, but the physical side of their relationship only served to strengthen their emotional bond – even if they both refused to acknowledge it! Of course Luke’s secret is always looming in the background and you could tell it was only a matter of time before things would once again go wrong for Alexis when she found out the real reason Luke came in to her life…and maybe set her back once again. Although the pace of this book moves quickly, the story was not rushed and I didn’t feel that the relationship development skipped any steps. The characters had a real emotional depth that came off the page – the hurt, the pain, the healing…it was easy to feel right along with the characters and then root for them to find their happy ever after. Katee Roberts delivers another great addition to the Out of Uniform series. This can be read as a stand-alone since she does a nice job giving enough back story where Alexis is concerned. The focus really is on Alexis and Luke and any secondary characters play a very minor role. This is another must read from Katee Roberts that has a great story filled with emotion, great characters, some great tension, and a dirty talking hero that sets off lot of sparks and steam! I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Finally, we get to see where Alexis ran off to at the end of Falling for His Best Friend ! If you haven't yet read book two, that's okay--you might not share in the urgency the rest of us felt at the end of that book, but it isn't until this one that we fully understand everything that was weighing Alexis down anyway. Avery and Drew (the heroine and hero of Falling) are only peripheral characters here; Alexis and Luke are off in Europe together for most of the book so it's as good a place to start as any. (Well, of course starting with book one-- In Bed with Mr. Wrong would be ideal, but if you can't for some reason, this book could stand alone just fine.) His Lover to Protect is exactly what we've come to expect from a Katee Robert story--a sexy, dirty-talking, and emotional read. Alexis and Luke's story is perhaps even more emotional than her usual, since both characters are dealing with a whole lot of physical and emotional damage for a lot of the book. Alexis recently contracted the same form of cancer that killed her mother, and as a result had to have a hysterectomy. Since she'd always wanted to have children, this was bad enough; add to that the fact that her fiance dumped her and her grandfather called her a failure to her face because of it? Yeah. Messed up, squared. When her younger sister becomes pregnant, Alexis just has to get away. Which is where Luke comes in. A former parajumper, he's forever grounded when a rescue mission goes wrong and he learns that his leg will not only be horribly scarred but will never have full functionality again. He's been working for his uncle as a mechanic and is back living with the aunt who raised him, but she's about ready to kick his surly butt to the curb if he can't manage to get back to the business of living, and soon. When a former teammate asks him to help find his brother's fiancee's missing sister, Luke takes the challenge. How hard can it be, finding one spoiled American princess in Europe and keeping her safe? Almost from the first scene, Alexis shows him what a challenge she can be. The two do not get along well at all, in spite of the pull of attraction they both feel. It takes them quite some time to admit even to themselves that they've started to like the person they've been having dirty thoughts about and doing dirtier things with, so obviously the "L" word isn't going to come easy either. They both have to come to terms with their lives as they are now and realize that they still have worth--tasks they'll help each other with along the way--before they can even think about committing to another person. So. Worth. It. But then there's the teensy problem that Luke hasn't yet admitted to Alexis why he's there in the first place, or his connection to her sister...which of course is going to blow up in his face. Can they get past his lie? I have to admit, that was the only part of the entire story that wasn't all that for me. Alexis's reaction to finding out who Luke really was felt blown out of proportion. I guess I understand where she was coming from--her so-called fiance and grandfather really did a number on her, I know--but I was surprised that she made the assumptions that she made when she found out that he'd lied to her. Fortunately her sister helped to point her in the right direction to forgive him and Luke had a fantastic win her back plan up his sleeve (after a very short wallowing session, anyway) so it all ended well. Very well. Will there be a book 4
His Lover to Protect by Katee Robert is a steamy, fast paced, unexpected romance. Alexis is hurting from what life has thrown at her and when she decides to take off for Europe sending only a text message to her sister, her sister and brother in law decide to send someone to watch over Alexis. Luke is only there to make sure Alexis is safe. He's not happy about it, he has enough going on in his life. Hurt physically and emotionally, he does not want to be trailing around Europe following Alexis, but as a favor he's doing this. Little does he expect Alexis to end up in his bed and in his heart. It's not what either of them were looking for, and neither of them are sure they even want more. But as they end up travelling through Europe together, through the push and pull of their developing relationship something more starts to develop. Can it last? Or is this a vacation fling that will come to a screeching halt when Alexis discovers who Luke really is? I haven't read the previous books in this series, but was able to jump into His Lover to Protect easily. I liked Alexis and Luke and the hidden depths that they have. They do come together very quickly, but sometimes this just happens...in real life too! Alexis appears strong, but she is fragile inside and I really felt her emotions while I was reading. Luke has his issues also, but as gruff as he is, I felt a pull towards him as well. I felt like these two developed a great connection quickly, and they were really good for each other. They helped build each other up and this brought them closer faster. Katee did a great job of portraying the feelings of Luke and Alexis. They were real and they really helped bring the characters to life. Katee also makes what each of them is going through believable, and my heart was with both of them. I dreaded what would happen when Alexis found out who Luke really was though. It wasn't something he could keep secret forever, and it seemed like heart ache was in both of their futures. Although for me it seemed like Luke kept his secret far too long, it worked for the plot of His Lover to Protect. The family dynamics that were significant for Alexis were well written and explained, and it made me feel for her even more. They were very interesting from her grandfather's treatment of her to her sister's inability to think a grown woman could take care of herself. The secondary characters in His Lover to Protect are very much on the periphery of the plot. This is really Luke and Alexis's story. I'd recommend His Lover to Protect to any romance reader looking for a sexy, fast read.

She also wonders why he wants to be with her. Luke knows if her tells her the real reason he sought her out she would be angry. He needs to keep her close and telling her the truth would have her running off. He cannot help that she is just beautiful and sexy and everything he never thought he wanted. Alexis asks herself why she puts up with Luke. He is just as broken as her. Together they make magic. He makes her feel feminine and she has never had that before. This book is just so sweet and sexy and tugs at the heartstrings. The only hope these two have for a future is if they both come clean about the things they are keeping from one another. I was amazed at how good the banter is. The sexy times are off the charts. This story just moves me. I found the characters to be people that were hurting and trying to come to grips that they have to make the future they want to live in. ***This ARC copy was given by Netgalley.com and its publishers for review purposes only.
At the beginning while reading I didn't think I was going to really like this one as much as the previous book in the series, but boy was I proved wrong. I really got caught up in the book. You have Luke and Alexis two damaged souls. They have scars both physical and emotional. To see the magic touch these two have for one another is something to read. You can't help, but feel for them. Their inner demons really do a number, but on Alexis' journey of self discovery she gets way more then she ever expected. Luke is set to task of "babysitting" Alexis, but he definitely gets way more then he bargained for. But will it come back to bit him in the butt by keeping it a secret why he just happens to show up everywhere Alexis is?
His lover to protect, their love is one that heals two broken souls Wow, what can I say. This is a true emotionally gripping story and is 3rd installment in Katee Robert’s adult, contemporary OUT OF UNIFORM erotic romance series. This is Alexis Yeung & Luke Jackson’s story. Alexis left after seeing her sister pregnant, knowing she can never have children ( she had to have surgery to prevent cancer) & she is backpacking across Europe . Alexis is just trying to do anything she can to purge the bitterness of her life out of her. Her fiancée left her, her grandfather can’t stand her and everything she left behind was ashes. She just has nothing left that was really good. She was drowning emotionally and she had to go somewhere and just get her personal pain under control, so maybe someday she could return home and be in the same place as her younger sister so she could see her growing family otherwise if she didn’t, she could never return home. She runs into a handsome guy on her trip and she indulges in a fantastic, mind-blowing night of sex with a good-looking yet battered stranger Luke Jackson was hired by his friends Ryan and Drew Flannery to find his sister in law and keep an eye on her because of how she took off. They want to make sure she is ok and to just keep an eye on her. Luke is a bit damaged himself, since an IED damaged him and took him apart and left him unable to work in the field he wanted to be in. (He used to be a Parajumper) Now he is following Alexis around Europe and suddenly these two meet and KBAM- it is like lightning- so immediate, they are falling in love and the chemistry between them is through the roof. He wasn’t banking on sleeping with her. He wasn’t banking on the sparks , the chemistry taking over, the lust enveloping them both. With them both going thru some huge personal losses, it seems they have to overcome the loss someway but with each helping one another, it seems they are finally helping the other work through the pain and loss. Finally there is acceptance and peace , a healing coming thru when for so long, there was pain. But what will happen when Alexis finds out who Luke really is? Will Alexis forgive or will Luke be able to get thru to Alexis and prove his love was all real and that he wants to be with her forever! This was one of the emotional, tissue gripping stories that get you from the very beginning and holds you til the end. I wanted to know Alexis’s story back in book2 and was hoping she would get her HEA and she finally does, although it was hard fought. To describe the MC, it is hard to say –not that is hard ; it is one that it is best to say by only to read the book and draw your own conclusions. Alexis is multifaceted. Luke is definitely an ALPHA male. But he has been hurt in the past. He cares a lot about Alexis , at first he didn’t but by the end, he really did and never wanted to hurt her. By far, I think this is one of my favorites by this author so I highly recommend this book. **A gifted copy was provided by the publisher for my honest review** My rating: 4.7 stars ****
His Lover to Protect was a good addition to the rest of the series. His one was Alexis Yeung and Luke Jackson which we meet in the previous books. After all of the tragic things Alexis has suffered, she travels to Europe to get away from everything. While out one night, she meets a guy named Luke. Luke is friends with Ryan, the guy from the first book. Luke is tasked with watching over Alexis while she’s on her vacation, because her family thinks she can’t take care of herself. While traveling across Europe, Luke and Alexis find they are attracted to each other and then they final do act on. But, of course, Luke hasn’t been honest with Alexis and when Alexis finds out what Luke was hiding things get interesting. I did like this book. I thought that Alexis and Luke were cute together, and yeah they had chemistry. But, I didn’t like how Luke didn’t tell Alexis who he really was. And you know that that is going to cause unnecessary drama. While I didn’t like that, what I did like was how they hated each other at first. And yeah obviously they get over it. I also liked how they could tease each other too. And I liked how it was cute, but Alexis and Luke could burn up the sheets. I would give this book a 3.25 to possibly a 3.5 stars. I liked it but I didn’t love it. It was cute and hot at times, and the characters went thought some rough times, but it didn’t really tug at my heart like I thought it would. If you read the previous books in the series, then I know you want to know about Alexis just like I was. So yes, I say go for it and pick this book up.
*Copy provided for honest review* Hold moses, I fall in love with this series more with every book. Katee is my go to author when I want to read a book that takes me away and gives me the great story with the amazing love story... Book three is just as good. I read this over a day, blushing and sighing the whole way. Who wouldnt want to read a book about a hot, tattooed up alpha male. Its well written, well plotted and doesnt leave you hanging.
Love heals two broken souls. Reviewed by Kim Rating: 3.5 His Lover to Protect, the third book in Katee Robert’s Out of Uniform series, is a standalone read. However, readers of the series have been waiting for Alexis Yeung’s story to be told. After losing everything she ever wanted, her ability to have children, her fiance, and the respect of her grandparents, Alexis is broken. Watching her sister Avery have everything Alexis has wanted is too much to bare. In a spur of the moment decision, she packs up and heads to Europe for parts unknown. Alexis and Avery are close. So when Alexis ups and leaves and purposely leaves her cell phone behind, Avery freaks. Not only is Avery freaking out, so is Drew (her fiance and best friend) and his brother Ryan. Since no one can travel to Europe to watch over Alexis, Ryan enlists the help of a retired pararescuer friend, Luke Jackson. Luke is also a broken man, having lost his identity and all he’s ever wanted to do and be when an IED destroyed his knee and future with the Air Force. Ryan’s mission is to keep eyes on Alexis to make sure she stays safe, but not to engage. But Alexis isn’t as helpless and weak as everyone seems to think she is. Alexis and Ryan’s relationship is cantankerous to say the least. When they aren’t busy losing their clothes, they’re arguing. But what’s interesting about this couple is that their back and forth, push and pull really helps them both to overcome the demons within themselves. What was supposed to be a night of Alexis scratching a much needed itch turns out to be so much more. Luke may not be a PJ any longer, but he still holds the conviction of his former job. The USAF Pararescue mission states, “PJs will do whatever required to deny the enemy a victory and bring our warriors home to fight another day.” He does just that for Alexis. Of course, since the part of Luke’s mission to not engage Alexis is shot, he has to walk a fine line so she doesn’t discover who he truly is. It’s going to take Juliet of Romeo and Juliet lore to truly bring these two together. His Lover to Protect isn’t anywhere close to being my favorite book of the series but Katee does give readers a solid story with characters you can become invested in. The story is definitely emotion-based with Alexis and Ryan each needing to heal as a result of their past. **Received a copy from Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest unbiased opinion.**
Alexis Yeung is a woman on a mission; to find herself and her self worth. She leaves her family, friends, job and overbearing Chinese grandfather behind and sets off on the ultimate adventure... Europe. Little does she know her sister Avery and childhood friend Ryan have called in the big guns to keep her safe on her trip. Luke Jackson, a former military parajumper, has better things to do than traipse across Europe on a bum leg behind a spoiled princess on a luxury vacation. The two quickly find out that first impressions are not everything and looks certainly can be deceiving. As with the rest of Katee Roberts books, I real liked His Lover to Protect. Alexis' make-or-break attitude was nice to see in a book of this genre. She was feisty, fiery and not afraid to put Luke in his place. Luke was a bit more cliche. The surly, military, alpha male who would stop at nothing to protect his lady. The editing was good, clean lines and word usage. The characters were well developed, both in physical attributes as well as personality. I loved the travel portion of the story; the description of the different cities and landmarks was very interesting as well as educational. The author did her homework for this book and it shows. I will definitely recommend His Lover to Protect! 4****wickedgoodstars -asw
Alexis Yeung hasn't always been bitter and broken. Once upon a time, she was part of a happy family, secure in the love of her parents and sister. Then, life threw a devastating curve ball, one that affected her whole family, and her whole future, and nothing was the same. She's held it all in for so long, but she's ready to take back her life. Former parajumper Luke Jackson didn't sign up to babysit a grown woman, especially one with a bad attitude and a chip on her shoulder, but here he is, trailing Alexis through Europe. And, to top it off, there are those darned sparks... As the oldest daughter, Alexis has had to deal with a lot of expectations. Losing her mother to cancer (the same cancer that rendered Alexis unable to have children), having her fiancé leave her, and the cold judgment of her traditional grandfather were bad enough, but watching her sister get pregnant and fall in love finally pushed Alexis to step out of her comfort zone and get her old self back. Luke is damaged himself, having lost everything that made him, well, him, when an IED took him apart and left him unable to continue the career that he loved. These two are damaged, angry and at a crossroads in their lives. Neither Alexis nor Luke were counting on anything more than a good time, but their attraction is white-hot and pretty instantaneous. And, beyond the physical, they spur each other to reexamine themselves and come out stronger and more whole on the other side. Katee Robert knows how to write one heck of a sexy read. As an author for the Entangled Brazen line, she's has perfected the art of these books. Sassy heroines that can hold their own, heroes that are a bit flawed, but hot and all too willing to save the day, and enough heat to power a small country make reading these a decadent pleasure for me. I really enjoyed Falling For His Best Friend, Avery's and Drew's book, and hoped that Alexis would be getting her own story, too. I have to admit that I actually liked this book a little bit more, and was rooting for Alexis and Luke all the way through. His Lover To Protect is a steamy and positive read, one that I flew through because I was invested in the story and the characters. This is an easy 4.5 star book for me, and I highly recommend that you add it to your TBR.
3.5 Darlin' stars This has been a great series for Katee Robert, and I was looking forward to Alexis Yeung’s turn, given we’d met her in her sister’s story; Falling for His Best Friend (#2 in this series) Alexis had been dealt a major bad hand, and was still coming to terms with the fallout. She decides that travel will help her work things through, and slips away in the dead of night, leaving her distraught sister, Avery, desperate to locate her. Luke Jackson has been asked by his friend, and former work colleague, to search and find Alexis, then follow her, covertly, to ensure her safety. What he didn’t anticipate, was the attraction he felt towards her, and the feeling she stirred within his sullen self. This was a story of two physically damaged souls, coming to terms mentally with both their backstories. Their appeal to each other was blistering, which gave Katee the opportunity to strut her steamy stuff. I adored Luke and his quick realisation that any further wallowing was going to get him nowhere. Coupled with his natural protection instincts, each darlin’ that rolled off his tongue made me sparkle. Alexis came across much more amenable than she had appeared in her sisters story. Watching her fight her fears alongside Luke, was both endearing and sobering. What I found a little over egged, was the mood of the story, quite melancholy, with each characters current frame of mind relayed a little on repeat. I have, however, enjoyed this series, and Katee Robert still sits quite snuggly amongst my list of must-read authors. ARC provided by Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review.
Fun, sexy novella I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was attracted to His Lover to Protect by Katee Robert because I love to travel, and the main characters meet while traveling in Europe. Albeit, one is traveling on impulse—after reading Eat, Pray, Love—in order to regroup and take back her life, and the other is traveling because a dear friend has asked him to discretely keep an eye out for his sister-in-law’s sister. Alexis has been stymied by the bad hand she was dealt in life. She is a pleaser to the point of being a doormat. She has let her very traditional grandparents and ex-boyfriend make her feel like a failure for something she cannot control. When she abruptly travels to Europe to get her mojo back, her sister and friends panic about her intent. Luke Jackson, ex-military, is nursing his own wounds. When asked by his comrade-in-arms, Ryan Flannery, to tail Alexis and keep her from harms way, Luke doesn’t ask questions, he hops on a plane. He never suspects that his friends might be throwing him a bone to stop him from wallowing in self-pity. When Alexis and Luke eventually meet, sparks fly, but not the romantic sort. This prickly pair can barely co-exist. Their presumptions about one another, based primarily on looks and circumstances, are exactly what each has been trying to avoid/overcome. “Did you just compare me to a Disney princess?” …“If the glass slipper fits.” As they travel through Europe together, they battle their inner demons and pasts while getting to know one another. Oh, and the “unattached” sex isn’t bad either. I have to admit that it took me a couple chapters to get into this story, but it ended up being an engaging erotic romance with a feel good HEA. His Lover to Protect (Out of Uniform #3) by Katee Robert is a fun, sexy novella. It is quick paced, the character banter is fun, and you’ll feel the full spectrum of emotions through the story. A great afternoon escape! A 3.5 star read. This review was done in conjunction with Book Nuts Reviews
Alexis is traveling abroad trying to sort her life out when her family hires Luke to follow her to make sure she is safe. He wasn't supposed to let her know he was there but in the first chapter he fails miserably at it. This is a story of acceptance, growing and healing. This is my first foray into Katee Robert books and I was on the fence with the book and how it started. I thought this was an interesting concept but my issues started at the first page. There wasn't any introduction of the characters in the beginning, it just jumped straight into the action. The beginning of a book is the part that usually draws me in and I was iffy about this one until I got into the book a little more. There was a lot of awesome sex scenes and I like how Luke tried to grow but he was a jerk and a half to Alexis. I wanted to shake him and kick him in his bad knee. LOL Yes, I'm bloodthirsty. All in all this was a good book but didn't make me want to read future books. Book provided in exchange for review.
4 - "If the glass slipper fits..." Stars! I really enjoyed His Lover to Protect, the third book in Katee Robert’s Out of Uniform series see’s Alexis Yeung, take a little trip around Europe. Having featured in the previous book in the series, I already knew a little about her, and the reasons for her leaving the US for Europe without a word to her family and friends. I have to admit, I wasn’t a huge fan of Alexis or her behaviour in Falling for His Best Friend, so I was interested to see how Katee would make her likeable to me. She did, and she did it well, mainly because you are given the background information to understand her reactions and actions fully. ”I’m just trying to understand you.” I think there was also potential for this book to be too angsty and overly dramatic due to the past issues that Alexis is trying to come to terms with, but the author got the mix of drama/sexy times just right for me. ”Darlin’, you got the drop on me once. It wouldn’t happen again.” Luke Jackson, is the other reason I really enjoyed this book; ornery with a side of sweet dirty talker, he ticked all my boxes, and I loved the banter between the two of them in the first half of the book. ”You gave me back a piece of what I was looking for.” Although the tropes are well-known, and you can pretty much guess how everything is going to work out early on in the book, sometimes things just gel together well and offer the reading experience that you are looking for at any given time. I was in the mood for a book of this nature when I picked it up, and it did exactly what it was expected to in that I had an enjoyable few hours with a likeable couple on their own adventure to happiness. Katee Robert's Out of Uniform series has quickly become one of my favorite from the Brazen imprint. I love that it's both sexy as hell and has quite a bit of depth. Anytime I can get my feels and my dirty talkers in one place, I'm a happy camper. Or reader. Whatever. :) Alexis definitely piqued my interest during Falling for His Best Friend. She's dealt with a lot of things in her life – loss of her mother, cancer and her inability to have children and the fact that her sister is now pregnant. I really hoped she would get a book (and a HEA). She deserved it. Since she left home in the previous book, she's been traveling the world trying to find herself and come to terms with some of the more painful parts of her past. Little does she know that her friend Ryan has sent Luke to follow her and make sure she's safe. Of course, this little lack of info sharing will come to cause some drama later in the book, but it's pretty low and relatively angst-free. I can't think of a more perfect match for Alexis than Luke. He was strong and sexy, protective and vulnerable. He pushed her. He was a little rough around the edges, but his heart was in the right place. He, too, was dealing with some issues from his own past and was as broken as Alexis. This is one of the reasons I think they were so well matched. It was easy to root for both of them to come to terms with their pasts and the impact it had on their futures, all while watching them try to find something real together. They shared a passion that extended outside of the bedroom and often led to some pretty fiery exchanges. It's all part of what made them THEM. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a great addition to the Out of Uniform series and just the story I wanted for Alexis. It was hot and emotional – a combination I happen to love. I felt the feels and was completely engaged with the story. It was just wonderful. If you like your sexy books with a side of feels, you need to be reading this series.
