Returning to Thorncliff Manor for a Masquerade Ball provides the perfect backdrop for intrigue, mystery and clandestine assignations. It’s also a wonderful diversion for Richard Heartly, a distraction from the endless time spent consumed with revenge. He’s been out of society since returning from the war, and with no real intentions to immerse himself, a ball is the best way to gather intelligence, gossip and dip his toes in. The house is, after all, the purview of his grandmother’s dearest friend, Lady Duncaster. Surely this is the opportunity he should not miss. Mary Bourneville is utterly real and fabulous – thoughtful, generous, kind and wholly determined to live her own life on her terms. She’s also doing her utmost, with her own scandalous secret, to finance her elder brother’s life and home. She’s a wonderfully complex woman, full of moments that juxtapose her own innocence with the worldliness that comes from struggling to take charge of her own life without being hampered by a controlling family or husband. Oh the secrets and revelations! Scandalous, deadly, shocking and even cowardly the layers of reveals and deepening of an underlying mystery involving a group of peers seeking to influence and control history, the story just glides from one moment to the next. Mary and Richard are delightful together – her far more confident and optimistic approach to life and the people she encounters are tempered only by her kindness and wish to cause no harm. Richard’s immersion in his quest for revenge and subsequent isolation from society, combined with his own fears of how he will be perceived with his injuries keep him on edge and carefully dissecting every utterance, insecure in his own approach to items that are not in line with his quest for revenge. The story is slowly building to a conclusion of the underlying mystery at Thorncliff, with rumors of treasure and connections to earlier generations of the major characters in this story. Lady Duncaster, the current resident and owner, has brought the players together again, requested their assistance and silence, and hopes to close this chapter. A wonderful installment that keeps interest and excitement for the next book. I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Sophie Barnes books are always a good read. This story involves many interesting characters. The hero is scarred and hiding away. The heroine is ignored by the Ton. Everything changes at a Masquerade Ball. You will love it.

First I will say that I loved how clean this romance was! Leaving much to the imagination is wonderful! The way the story reminded me of Phantom was expected and good all at once. Richard has been scarred and is hiding himself away from everyone except his brother and father. His family knows he's alive but he avoids them as well. He meets Mary while at a masquerade and both give fictitious names. They instantly feel a connection and slowly get to know each other. There were several twists and turns, some I saw coming and some I didn't! I did enjoy that you could feel the emotions the characters felt. There were no love scenes that you are witness to, but they did enjoy the kissing a lot! I look forward to finding out more about the mystery they found along the way in the next book!

His Scandalous Kiss is the third book in the Secrets at Thorncliff Manor fabulous serious by Sophie Barnes and I wish it wasn’t the last one in this series, there are so many adorable characters I would love to read about. I absolutely love this book, it is romantic, captivating with mystery and secrets. Richard Heartly has been avoiding society and his family after returning home from war five years ago, plotting his revenge for a terrible betrayal. But when in a masked Ball at Thorncliff Manor he encounters the beautiful Lady Mary he can’t keep himself locked in the room again. Lady Mary is beautiful and has been ignored by the ton so far but after the masked ball all the eligible gentlemen start to notice her, but can she trust them with her secrets especially the mystery masked gentleman………………. Sophie Barnes is one of my auto buy authors, I love her books and I must say His Scandalous Kiss is one of her best book. I love everything about this book the story line was amazing, the plot was excellent with a great twist toward the end and the mysteries, secrets and how wonderful characters were. I highly recommend this fabulous book. Thank you so much Sophie Barnes!

Thorncliff Manor - 1820 Richard Heartly is staying at Thorncliff Manor, as a guest of Lady Duncaster. She was also a friend of his late grandmother. Tonight, there is a masked ball and Richard is using the name Signor Antonio because he does not want his family to know he is attending the ball. Richard has lived a solitary life for the last 5 years and is taking it slow with returning. However, Lady Duncaster is helping to ease his reentry to society which will be an event that will draw much attention. When Richard was fighting in the war, he was burned on his face, leaving him scarred. Thus, he is not quite ready to show himself. At the ball, a beautiful masked lady gets Richard’s attention and he tries to find the courage to ask her to dance. Later, he finds her listening to music in the garden. As they talk, the lady admits that she prefers her own company, peace, and quiet. These are the same things that Richard has been doing these past years. In addition, they both share a love of reading. In response to his request for her name, she calls herself Lady Eleanor, as she is dressed as Eleanor of Aquitaine, and Richard gives his name as Signor Antonio. Lady Eleanor is actually Mary Bourneville and is attending the party at Thorncliff with her aunt who is pressuring her to find a husband. Mary is being pursued by Lord Rotridge, an older man and an Earl whose property’s neighbors her grandfather’s. An independent woman, Mary is irritated that the Earl thinks she should be eager to marry him, which is not the case. His constant pushiness is an irritant to her. When Richard discovers Mary late one night out on the grounds, he is surprised and amazed at her secret which could cause a huge scandal if found out. They continue to meet at night and their friendship turns to love. When they discover a long-lost secret of Thorncliff Manor, life becomes even more exciting for them. I really loved this story. Richard and Mary are both strong characters with pure, true love, and respect for one another. The author has created several storylines that all combine to make this a real historical romance novel. You don’t want to miss it. I learned so much as I read this book. What a treat! Copy provided by the publisher via Edelweiss

His Scandalous Kiss is a fantastic Historical Romance. A suspenseful story that's full of secrets and mystery that kept me wanting to know more, but it was Richard and Mary's romance that had my heart swooning that I love the most. There are more secrets than just the identity of who is behind the mask at this masquerade ball—even Thorncliff Manor holds its own secrets and mysteries. For Richard and Mary, those secrets will reveal a heart's desire that will strengthen their love. Lady Mary has no interest or desire to marry. She believes the benefits of marrying a man would be few compared to what she would lose, and that would be her independence. Mary will not sacrifice her independence for any man, at least that's the plan she had her mind set to…until the mystery man behind the mask shows Mary his heart of honor and honesty. Mary realizes her own heart has a desire, too—the desire to love and be loved by this beautiful, amazing man that hides behind the mask. Richard Heartly is a man with a vendetta. He seeks revenge against the man who has betrayed him and taken his expectations of ever sharing a future with a wife and children. But for one night, from behind a mask, Richard can be the man he used to be. And Mary is the beautiful woman that Richard has long to find who sees the true man hidden just beneath the mask. Richard and Mary are both hiding secrets, and they know they will have to expose the secrets of their hearts if their love will ever stand a chance. But even their love may not be enough to enable them to forgive when all their secrets come to light. Richard and Mary are both denying themselves love because of wanting to hold on to their secrets. Richard and Mary's romance is a beautiful one that shows that trust and truth are what love grows from. I adored and loved the intense and intimate romance between these two beautiful characters. His Scandalous Kiss is a must read.

Having read as many books as I have, it's easy for me to make a decision on how I feel about a particular story and author writing style. Sophie Barnes made that harder for me with His Scandalous Kiss. Ms. Barnes is a masterful storyteller. Her imagery is so vivid that I felt like I was experiencing the story first hand. Secrets, suspense, romance and sensuality abound with this novel.
