A steamy read that has moments that will pull at your heartstrings. Both Cassie and Mark are suffering the loss of Jeff and dealing with it in different ways. Cassie does a lot of growing and discovers herself while Mark has to come to a hard realization. Their relationship is rocky. Both of them have their own issues to deal with and they're not exactly on the same page in the beginning (I wanted to give them both a good shake at times). However, their attraction is undeniable. Their first meeting is full of flirty banter and both of them learn more and empathize more with one another as they spend time together. I have to admit my favorite part is the rescue mission. It's a fast-paced blast of action and both of them had to trust each other to do their part right and hold it together.

To read this story while keeping an eye out for the real-life hurricane causing havoc and misery where ever it touched down made reading this book an unforgettable experience, the images of the tale fierce and vivid in my mind. I admire so much those people who are willing and able to put themselves in danger to help others, no matter what the cost. The struggle Mark had with the past events that were still echoing in the present time, gave the rescue personnel a very human side, showed the price they pay, and the sacrifices they make. Those rescue scenes in the tale had my heart pounding, the fight against the force of nature incredibly intense, every moment a matter of life or death, the extreme preciseness that needed in every move they made just left me breathless. Cassie and Mark's chemistry was strong and passionate. They connected on many levels, yet the conflict between them was something they had a little control of themselves. The constant life and death situations they work with has no room for fear or second thoughts, yet Mark can't imagine losing another person dear to him after the hell he had been through in the past year with guilt and self-doubt. It was interesting to see the hero to be the one with so much vulnerability, doubt, and fear while heroine soared and excelled. It worked for me in the beginning, and I wouldn't take any moment away from Cassie, with her success in her professional life and her personal development. But Mark's decisions guided by the fear got a strong reaction from me, it was something that I struggled with. I think the development of the relationship could have benefited from an epilogue, as the ending left me needing more. Two forces of nature - love and hurricane - showing their fiery, stormy, passionate essence, touching the lives of the characters, changing them for good, and leaving them thunderstruck. A marvelously fascinating tale, that came eerily close to reality as watching Matthew make its havoc ~ Four Spoons

4 1/2 STARS! In Karen Rock’s latest, she takes us on a heart wrenching journey into the mind of a man who left a brother in arms behind, into the mind of a loved one receiving the news back home and having to pick up the pieces of a so-called life again, and into the hearts of all who were touched by a tragedy. Sad, eye opening and sexy all rolled into one! Really enjoyed the characters and look forwarding to reading more of Karen’s coast guard heroes! As a rescue pilot for the United States Coast Guard, Lt. Commander Mark Sampson has to make dangerous, split second decisions every day. He’s saved many lives, but the most recent one that he didn’t is tearing him apart. Nurse Cassie Rowe is looking for some closure and a way to move forward with a more meaningful life. She didn’t expect it to be on the same mission with the man her family holds responsible for her brother’s death though! She should hate him … but the passion they already shared makes for a lot of mixed emotions!

Sexy pilots, rescue swimmers - what more could a girl ask for? I really enjoyed this steamy novel that has Mark and Cassie coping with the death of her brother and finding love in the process. I loved that Cassie found her way and decided to live life for herself and not others - even if it meant losing Mark. Mark had some soul searching to do, but in the end figured out what's really important in life. Another great addition to the Uniformly Hot series! 4.5 stars I received an ARC from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review, all conclusions are my own.

I LOVED that the story dealt with the Coast Guard. I have a soft place in my heart for them as they rescued my Dad when he was a teen and without them, there would be no me. ;) I also adore the movie The Guardian with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher where Kevers is a very experienced rescue swimmer and Kutcher has a lot to learn. I cry every time I watch it and it looks like parts of His to Protect will be no different. It is well written and touches upon some difficult issues so get out the tissues before you even start. Karen really did her research. Everything about the story rang true from the medical jargon to the military procedures. The humor and the heartbreak were spot on as well, making for a beautiful background for this incredibly well-written romance. Cassie and Mark, our two main characters, both entered the story full of grief. Throughout the story we get to watch how they separately try to work through that grief and misplaced blame and see if they can achieve some healing. It is heart wrenching at times as well as beautiful to see when progress is being made. Their romance throughout this time was carefully woven and at times oh-so-hot. I thought that this just goes to show how easy it is to misplace blame and guilt when we are so badly wounded that we think we will never heal. Been there, am doing that. It’s a process to be sure. Karen handled it well though. I was satisfied with the ending and I’m pretty sure you will be as well. *****5Stars***** I gratefully received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review I mostly enjoyed this one. It was quite a lot steamier than I am used to from this author. I especially liked the original setting and focus on the rescue work and the coast guard. This book deals with romance, but also with danger, loss and healing. There are some heartwarming and also some heart wrenching scenes. I liked Cassie and how she starts this mission to honor her dead brother and along the way found her path in life. Mark was interesting as well, but I didn’t like how pushy he seemed sometimes. He kept pushing Cassie away or trying to decide for her what she should do and I just wished he talked to her a bit more. The romance was hot and steamy, but I would’ve liked to see a bit more talking and getting to know each other. It felt like they were either having sex or arguing and I just never fully felt the romance because of that. All in all this was a great read and I am looking forward to the next book in this series as I think it will feature the rescue swimmer from this one and I am curious about his story.

Attraction brought them together, anguish and guilt may tear them apart. Cassie has always looked up to her brother. He was the fearless one who's daring ways made for sleepless nights but filled her with pride. Losing her hero has left her lost but determined to live life to the fullest in his honor. Her first risky endeavor lands her in the arms of Mark, a stranger who unbeknownst to her blames himself for her brother's death. Within the pages of His to Protect, Ms. Rock not only gives a realistic view of the trials and tribulations of the Coast Guard. She also gives an up close and personal view of the effects of survivors guilt and the close relationships between the agencies of search and rescue. One wrong move can be the difference between life and death. Informative, emotional and tempting is the best way to describe this action packed romance.
