Overview

Historic San Francisco: A Concise History and Guide / Edition 2

No American city has a more colorful history than San Francisco. In this unique book, author Rand Richards not only provides a vivid narrative of this special city from its very beginnings all the way through to the modern era, but also tells where to find the historic buildings, sites, museums, and artifacts that make that history come alive. Just a few of the things you will find in Historic San Francisco are the locations of, and the fascinating histories behind: A 1623 Spanish cannon that once guarded the entrance to the Golden Gate. A gold nugget discovered by James Marshall at Coloma in January 1848. The last surviving Nob Hill mansion. Relics from the 1906 earthquake and fire including clusters of melted dimes and pennies found in the ruins.

About the Author

Rand Richards has been a private investigator, insurance claims adjustor, and advertising executive. He has a B.A. in history and an M.B.A. degree. He has lived in San Francisco since 1972 except for a year spent at Schiller College in Paris, France where he taught international marketing. An avid student of history, he combined that interest with his love for San Francisco to create this book.
Rand is an award-winning historian who is a member of the California Historical Society and several other historical associations. Since writing and publishing Historic San Francisco, Rand has come out with three more books—Historic Walks in San Francisco: 18 Trails Through the City's Past; Haunted San Francisco: Ghost Stories From the City's Past; and Mud, Blood, and Gold: San Francisco in 1849.
