Scullard and Cary's nearly 700 page work is filled with exciting examples and virtually replete with every detail of Roman History, Society, and Culture. However, the authors achieve this task in a style which can best be described as plain, and most accurately as roundabout. The style is simply terrible. I have personally read many different books on the topic of Roman History, and after each I reluctantly return to this one for its virtually perfect accuracy and detailed contents. Those reasons are the best uses of this book. Also, this is not a book best for long-term reading, but it is better for reference uses on a specific era, person, or the like. Furthermore, the blanched paper and columned typesetting does little to combat the fatigue from this utterly unenthralling book. However, as a reference work, this book is invaluable for any questions on Roman Society, History, or Governance.
