Overview

J.R.R. Tolkien’s THE LORD OF THE RINGS, now firmly acknowledged as one of the most popular books of the twentieth century, has captivated generations of readers with its completely convincing fantasy. In The History of The Lord of the Rings, the author’s son and literary heir, Christopher Tolkien, examines the creation of that epic from its inception to its finished form. At the core of these books are many early drafts and unpublished passages by Tolkien, which add greatly to a thorough understanding of his masterpiece.
Combining his father’s unique vision with his own privileged insight and editorial commentary, Christopher Tolkien’s THE HISTORY OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS is a set of four volumes — including one unique to this collection — that no fan of THE LORD OF THE RINGS can afford to overlook.

Editorial Reviews

I love tolkien, it is one of the greatest book series every written. It has been put into over 30 languages, so that's got to tell you something! I just got this series (The History of The Lord of The Rings) and it is great. Well written, and well edited. Chris Tolkien (J.R.R Tolkien's Son) Goes over the many versions of the lord of the rings, and gives them in full. You can read over the first version of Bilbo's 'Long-Expected Party' and every other story in the series. Or you can read letters from J.R.R. Tolkien to his publishers and friends. Chris tolkien also goes over how his father wrote the series, step by step. This is a must buy. However, if you do NOT WANT TO PAY $40 plus, go to you local Barnes and Noble to buy each book in this set seperatly. The books Are: 'The Return of The Shadow,' 'The Treason of Isengard,' 'The War of The Ring.' Also in this set is a small book 'Sauron Defeated: The End of the Third Age.' Each of these books are seperatly about $14. Or you can always buy the full set here, now!
